Fake captain defrauds woman of ₹17.5 lakh, take these steps to stay cautious
Her husband – at Guleria's instance -- applied for a personal loan of ₹ 17.5 lakh which was transferred to the joint bank account of husband and wife. Then Guleria told them to transfer the entire money to his account so that he could apply for the assistance and subsidy. Then when they transferred the money through RTGS, Guleria stopped taking their calls and completely disappeared from the scene. This is one of the many frauds which have been happening all around for the ease of money transfer through net banking and UPI, among other options.
In the first half of 2024-25, banking fraud cases surged 27 per cent over the corresponding period of previous year, RBI data showed.
1. Never transfer money on any pretext: In this instance, the victims were persuaded to transfer the money to the perpetrator's bank account. This is a complete red flag.
Why would someone convince you to transfer the money for any reason but to commit a fraud? Several cases of digital frauds also came to light where victims were told to transfer the money in order to prove genuineness.
2. Do not trust a stranger: Seeking help for subsidy and housing assistance should ideally happen via a formal channel and not through some person you meet unofficially.
A new person promising to help you financially is just a stranger who you are reposing your faith in. There is more risk than benefit. ,
3. Reviews from friends: It is always recommended to ask around and seek feedback from the people around you. Sometimes you get too engrossed in the situation at hand and as a result, you develop a tunnel vision and fail to get the overall perspective of the situation.
In this case, if the victim had asked around about the perpetrator, he would have probably been told that several Army personnel were defrauded with similar modus operandi.

Three Pakistani militants killed in Dachigam encounter: Army
The Army on Tuesday (July 29, 2025) said that three Pakistani militants, allegedly involved in the Pahalgam attack, were killed in a joint, coordinated, and protracted operation carried out by the Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) on Monday (July 28, 2025). The militants have been identified as Suleman Shah alias Faisal Jaat, Hamza Afgani, and Jibran Bhai, the Army said. Two AK-series rifles, one M4 rifle, and a large quantity of ammunition and warlike stores were recovered from the encounter site, the Army spokesperson said. 'The mission marks a critical step in restoring security in Kashmir and commitment of Indian Army towards establishing peace and development. The operation continues,' the Army spokesperson said. The General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C), Northern Command, said that search operations had been ongoing in south Kashmir's Dachigam forest areas for the past few months. On April 22, twenty-six civilians, mostly tourists, were killed by a group of militants at Baisaran meadow in Pahalgam, Anantnag district. The attack prompted extensive search operations in several mountainous terrains surrounding the region. The Lieutenant Governor was briefed about the operation by Lt. General Upendra Dwivedi, who was accompanied by Lt. General Prashant Srivastava, General Officer Commanding (GOC), 15 Corps. 'A joint operation was then launched by the Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and CRPF, with the significant assistance of intelligence agencies, leading to the elimination of Pakistani terrorists,' a Raj Bhawan spokesperson said. Meanwhile, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and National Conference president Dr. Farooq Abdullah said, 'I haven't seen them and cannot say who they were. After Sindoor: Military response up, terror down
Indian security forces killed three terrorists on July 28 in Harwan, near Srinagar's Dachigam National Park. This is the latest in a series of operations by Indian security forces following the Pahalgam terror attack in May 7's Operation Sindoor, Indian security forces have led more operations, like Keller, Nader, and Mahadev, where multiple terrorists were killed in Shopian, Tral, and Srinagar. Since then, terrorist activity has reduced in Jammu and Kashmir, especially in IN J&KBetween January and July this year, Jammu and Kashmir witnessed 98 terror-related incidents, and 32 terrorists were killed in various encounters. There were 11 incidents in January and 17 in February, with no terrorists killed in February despite the spike. However, the situation escalated in March, which recorded the highest number of terror-related incidents at 21, followed by April with 16. The most intense month was May, both in terms of operations and outcomes, where 13 terrorists were killed in 13 separate spike in terrorist eliminations was largely due to Operation Sindoor and follow-up actions like Operation Keller and Operation Nader, all conducted within the same month. The focus during this period was firmly on tackling cross-border May, the number of incidents began to decline. June recorded 12 incidents, and in July, terror incidents dropped to eight, making it the calmest month this year. The number of terrorists killed also followed a similar pattern, peaking in May, dropping to four in June, and further to three in nature of terror activity in Jammu and Kashmir appears to be shifting. Earlier, most incidents were concentrated in South Kashmir and along the border. But recent attacks and encounters, including the deadly Pahalgam ambush in April and the July operation near Harwan in Srinagar, show that violence is now moving closer to urban of OP SindoorAfter Operation Sindoor, the Indian government launched several operations to eliminate internal terror cells. On May 13, in Shopian's Keller Forest, three terrorists were killed, including a local Lashkar-e-Taiba commander, during a joint Army, Police, and CRPF operation.
