Egypt Repatriates 11 Smuggled Artefacts From New York
Jun 05, 2025
Egypt has recovered 11 ancient artefacts that were illegally trafficked to the United States, as part of its continued efforts to safeguard national heritage and repatriate looted antiquities. The items were formally handed over to the Consulate General of Egypt in New York following a joint investigation led by US authorities.
The retrieval was the result of close coordination between Egypt's Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the New York District Attorney's Office.
Among the most notable objects are a vessel shaped like the ancient deity Bes, dating between 650 and 550 BCE, and a Roman-era funerary mask of a young man. Also recovered was a vividly coloured wall relief from the New Kingdom depicting the upper part of a human figure inscribed with hieroglyphs.
The collection further includes a tombstone from the 3rd–4th century CE, a 19th-century inscribed vessel bearing Arabic script, and a number of other culturally important items.

TikTok given three-month deadline to align with Egyptian content standards: MP - Society
TikTok has been given a three-month deadline to adjust its content to align with Egyptian social and moral standards, according to MP Ahmed Badawi, a member of the House of Representatives' Telecommunications Committee. Speaking in a phone interview on Alaamat Istifham on Al-Shams TV, Badawi said the deadline was set following a high-level meeting last month between the CEO of TikTok Egypt and North Africa, the head of the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA), and members of the parliamentary committee. During the meeting, TikTok pledged to revise its content moderation policies to better reflect Egypt's cultural norms and values. Badawi stressed that while Egyptian authorities retain the legal right to ban any app that violates national laws, he believes stricter regulation and targeted legislation are more effective than outright bans. He said the solution is not to block these platforms, but to enforce standards that reflect Egypt's social fabric. He added that the committee is actively monitoring TikTok content and is prepared to intervene if violations persist. Some types of content, he confirmed, have already been restricted. The Telecommunications and Information Technology Committee is currently exploring legal frameworks to regulate digital platforms, aiming to strike a balance between safeguarding freedom of expression and upholding public morality. The development comes amid growing public pressure to ban the Chinese-owned platform, with critics accusing TikTok of spreading content that 'violates societal values' and 'defames the reputation of Egyptian women.' In the past 72 hours, at least six prominent TikTok creators—including five women—have been arrested following legal complaints filed by private lawyers. The complaints name around 40 TikTok users, accusing them of charges ranging from spreading false information and violating public decency laws to undermining social norms. The controversy escalated after a viral video surfaced of a TikToker claiming to be the secret daughter of the late President Hosni Mubarak and a former pop singer. She alleged the existence of a human organ trafficking network operating in Egypt, implicating several social media personalities and actors. One of the actresses named in the video filed a formal complaint, leading to the TikToker's arrest on charges of spreading false news and defamation. According to data published by Statista in early 2024, TikTok has an estimated 32.9 million adult users in Egypt—roughly 47 percent of the country's population aged 18 and over. Egypt following up on status of citizens aboard sunken boat off Libyan coast - Foreign Affairs
Egypt is closely following up with the Libyan authorities on the status of Egyptian nationals who were aboard a boat that sank off the coast of Tobruk, a statement by the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Wednesday. On Thursday, 18 migrants lost their lives when their boat sank off the coast of Tobruk, confirmed the International Organization for Migration (IOM). The foreign ministry stated that the Egyptian Consulate General in Benghazi dispatched a delegation to the city of Tobruk immediately upon receiving information regarding the incident. The consulated took procedures to transport the bodies of victims who were identified via photos by relatives to the border crossing between Egypt and Libya. The consulate is also coordinating with the Libyan side to complete the procedures for transferring other bodies once identified. Moreover, it is monitoring the conditions of several survivors in preparation for their repatriation once Libyan investigations are concluded. The foreign ministry urged all citizens to refrain from resorting to irregular migration routes due to the grave dangers they entail, as well as the risk of exploitation by human trafficking networks. "Egypt is committed to providing safe alternatives and lawful opportunities for youth, whether through training or qualification programmes or by expanding avenues for regular migration via official channels with partner countries," the ministry affirmed.
