TikTok and Instagram beauty spots creating work for rescue teams
"We use social media to see all these amazing places, and then we figure out how we are going to get to them," said delivery driver Nathaniel, who met trainee nurse Charlie at the hospital where they both work."We wake up and say 'Oh, we're going here'. It's just spontaneous all the time," added Charlie. They had headed out to Eryri National Park for a fresh adventure with two other friends, but Charlie was still unaware of the final destination."Nathaniel said they had something planned for us. They wouldn't show us the TikTok, so it was a complete surprise," said Charlie.
The surprise was hidden deep in the historic Dinorwig Quarry, in Gwynedd - which was the world's second largest slate quarry when it was opened more than 200 years ago.It is a maze of paths, tunnels and mines, all set on staggered gigantic terraces cut into the mountainside overlooking Llanberis on the edge of the national park.It closed in 1969, and was named as part of a new Unesco World Heritage Site in 2021.
Most of the quarry is privately owned and officially off limits, with no public access. It is dotted with warning signs, fences and locked gates. But that has not stopped it becoming a magnet for adventurers, especially rock climbers. Those well equipped and experienced sports enthusiasts have been generally tolerated in the quarry. However, since the explosion in social media, the location has also been attracting thousands of less experienced visitors, often unaware of the dangers hiding in the old workings and mountains of slate debris.
Only recently, a massive rock slide in the quarry was captured on camera, as thousands of tonnes of slate rock peeled away from one of the faces on a terrace near to where Nathaniel and Charlie were headed."When we got there, there was like a lagoon, blue, crystal clear water. We saw loads of caves, and then we actually found the surprise, a hidden waterfall," explained Charlie."It was so pretty."Nathaniel said they had climbed quite high into the quarry and were enjoying the day."Then, as we were getting down, that's when everything went really bad," he said."Everything that we were standing on was just crumbling away."I was like 'Charlie, I can't think of a way down, without one of us getting seriously injured'."While their two friends in the group did find a way out, Nathaniel and Charlie found themselves completely stranded. They were left with only one option - to dial 999 and ask for help.
It led to the UK's busiest mountain rescue team being called out to save them.Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team tops the league for all call outs across Wales and England, with well over 300 rescue "shouts" in 2024."There was definitely the potential for them to injure themselves if they'd tried to move from where they were," said team member Dave Murray.Add to that a named storm was now making itself felt, the couple's predicament was getting worse by the minute.
"We had 70mph winds. Bits of slate flicking up. We got little cuts on us from the wind blowing it at our faces," said Nathaniel."We were in such an open area, it was freezing. Obviously scared - and we were holding on for dear life," added Charlie. But there was relief when the rescue team finally reached them, and used a series of rope relays to safely get them off the quarry cliff face."I've constantly got it on my head that I nearly killed my best friend," said Nathaniel."I couldn't find the words to apologise."
According to Mountain Rescue England and Wales, the body overseeing rescue teams across the two nations, there has been an alarming leap in the number of call-outs for younger people. In 2019, 166 calls involved those between the ages of 18 and 24.Fast forward five years, and that figure stands at 314 - a 90% increase. It has led mountain rescue teams to make repeated warnings about following social media posts, as they face the pressure to deal with mounting calls for help."I've seen videos of people who make it look easy. But somebody seeing that video - for them - it might be well beyond their limits," said Llanberis Mountain Rescue's Dave Murray, as in Nathaniel and Charlie's case."They've read about a particular route to follow, and they've just taken the wrong turning, and perhaps haven't realised what that route would have involved."Hopefully, they'll take it as a bit of a learning experience."Charlie said those lessons were clear, adding: "If I've taken anything away from what happened, I'd say take the correct gear, know our limits and research."

We went on what we thought was a normal cruise but were surrounded by swingers trying to have sex with us, it was awful
The holidaymaker said she will never go on a cruise again after her experience ROCK THE BOAT We went on what we thought was a normal cruise but were surrounded by swingers trying to have sex with us, it was awful Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A WOMAN who thought she was going on a romantic cruise with her partner was left stunned after she realised what was really going on. Robyn-Jay was looking forward to her 10-day cruise, but that excitement quickly faded when she realised many of the holiday makers were swingers. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 2 Robyn-Jay and her partner, William, were approached by swingers on the trip Credit: 2 Robyn-Jay said she would never go on a cruise again after her experience Credit: Taking to TikTok to share her story, she explained that she and her partner went to the ship's nightclub on the first night as they tried to settle in and get their bearings. That's when things began to take a turn and as they decided to sit in a booth and people watch when a man came up to them to ask if they "wanted a third", Robyn-Jay claimed. But the strange encounters didn't end there, as on the second night Robyn-Jay claimed a woman called their room and tried to hook up with the couple, despite having never met them before. According to Robyn-Jay, the woman needed to know their room number, which they didn't share, to be able to call, which made the couple feel uneasy. The pair said they could also hear couples from other rooms on the ship shouting at each other from their balconies. "It's not that they were friends, they were trying to arrange hook ups," she said in the viral video. But it was what allegedly happened next that drew the line for the holidaymaker. She explained that one night she got all dressed up to enjoy some of the entertainment the cruise put on. After finding a quiet place to sit with her partner, Robyn-Jay claimed she noticed a man sat at another tabled was staring at her. "This was something different, this was a whole other level. I felt so uncomfortable in my skin, it really gives you that horrible feeling inside," she said. Terrified sprinting tourists are LEFT BEHIND after cruise ship flees Hawaii tsunami as Brit reveals mad dash to escape That's when the man, who was sat with his wife, allegedly bent down to try and look up Robyn-Jay's skirt. She went on to explain that her partner, William, soon noticed and called the man out on his behaviour before he got up and left with his wife. The holidaymaker went on to claim that she even saw an older man act inappropriately towards a young girl on the ship and he was overly touchy with her. "I just really think [cruises are] a place for a bit of lawlessness and I think people go there knowing that and I honestly dread to think what goes on in the eyes of other people," she said. After sharing her experience, people chimed in to share their experiences on cruise ships, and many thought Robyn-Jay got unlucky. "I've just been on a Marella Cruise and never experienced anything like this," one person said. And a second agreed: "Been on a few cruises - not my experience," they commented on the video. "This could have happened absolutely anywhere, it's not because you were on a cruise. It's also completely common knowledge that cruises are swinger's paradise," someone else wrote. And someone who claimed to work for a cruise company added: "This is a well known thing on some cruise ships. "Unfortunately you have experienced some awful behaviour and some people should understand that not everyone's a swinger. Not all cruise lines behave like this."

‘I'm a flight attendant — there's one thing I would never do when sitting on a plane'
A former flight attendant and TikTok creator has shared a warning about the window seat Cabin crew understand the realities of air travel better than most passengers. Their knowledge stems from years of hands-on experience rather than just theoretical training, which is why their advice about flying should be taken seriously. When a flight attendant reveals what they personally avoid doing whilst aboard an aircraft, it's definitely worth listening. Many travellers book their preferred seats well in advance, hoping for a more pleasant journey. Most flyers opt for either window seats to lean against or aisle positions for additional leg room, but one former flight attendant has issued a stark warning about choosing the window spot, reports the Express. TikTok user and former cabin crew member Cierra Mistt has raised serious concerns about window seats and explained her reasoning. Breeding ground for bacteria Cierra explained: "While it is true that cleaners do come on most after passengers are done getting off the plane, they don't do a deep clean like you might think they do. "In fact, they only did that during Covid, and the only thing they really deep-cleaned was the tray tables and seatbelts. Nowadays, it's mostly just to tidy up and getting the trash off the floor." Noting that some carriers provide sanitising wipes when passengers board, she continued: "If I were you, instead of wiping down the tray tables and seatbelts that they just cleaned, I would use that wipe to clean off the window that you're next to, because just like the bathroom floor, those things have never been cleaned." Taking to the comments section of the video, most viewers urged others to always pack cleaning wipes to sanitise the window area. One viewer remarked: "I can't believe they get away with not cleaning anything! That is horrible!". Another commented: "I always clean the window and the head seat. Sometimes looks greasy." A third confirmed: " I can verify this. They didn't even remove the melted chocolate from my seat and tray left by the previous passenger before I sat down. I had to sort it myself." Someone else explained: "You have less than seven minutes to clean a whole plane. Sometimes, only two people are there to clean a plane." Defending the airlines, another viewer countered: "They do a deep clean and search EVERY single night, including disinfecting everything with cleaner." According to Aviation Job Search, standard cleaning takes place between flights, whilst aircraft also undergo regular thorough cleaning to uphold high hygiene standards. These comprehensive sessions involve scrubbing cabin walls, wiping down overhead compartments, and clearing out air vents. Seats and cushions are meticulously hoovered and disinfected to eliminate any concealed grime or debris. Is the window seat actually the safest? Specialists at Travel & Leisure disclosed that choosing a window seat might be the most effective method to avoid catching illnesses from other travellers. They explained: "A 2018 study said that window seats are best because they're the most isolated (other than in certain ultra-luxe first-class mini cabins). "Window-side passengers are seated next to just one passenger, with seats separating them from the people in front and behind. Most importantly, they are furthest from the aisle, where crew and other passengers can frequently pass by." Additional studies also discovered that travellers positioned nearer to the aisle are more prone to standing up mid-flight, boosting their likelihood of coming into contact with bacteria whilst moving throughout the aircraft. Given the research available, it appears the window seat offers the greatest protection against picking up bugs, though it remains wise to take precautions and clean your space before departure.
