Pakistan won't turn blind eye to allies' wrongdoing, says deputy PM on US strikes in Iran
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar said on Friday his country did not turn a blind eye to US airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities earlier this month, adding that close relations with a country do not justify silence in the face of wrongdoing.
The statement came during a news briefing in the federal capital, where Dar spoke to the media about Pakistan's recent diplomatic engagements, including his participation in the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) meeting in Istanbul and the Pakistan-United Arab Emirates Joint Ministerial Commission.
Despite a recent revival in bilateral ties with Washington, Pakistan formally condemned the US strikes in a statement, calling them a violation of international law and affirming Iran's right to self-defense under the UN Charter.
'Just because relations are good with a country doesn't mean you should consider something wrong to be right,' he told the media.
'As you witnessed, we didn't hesitate or delay,' he continued. 'I spoke with the foreign secretary, gave a task to the spokesperson and we exchanged draft statements. It's now a part of the historic record: we criticized the attack, and we did it on record.'
Dar's remarks came in the wake of a 12-day conflict between Iran and Israel that erupted after Israeli strikes targeted Iranian nuclear and military sites, prompting retaliation from Tehran.
The war began while the administration in Tehran was holding nuclear negotiations with the US that later joined the fray, launching its own strikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities.
While Washington said the attacks had set back Iran's nuclear program by years, there was international concern over a wider regional war.
Dar said he had been personally involved in formulating the country's response as Islamabad prepared its official statement.
Pakistan, currently a member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), also raised the issue at the world body in New York.

Israel killed more than 30 senior security officials and 11 senior nuclear scientists to deliver a major blow to Iran's nuclear ambitions, a senior Israeli military official said on Friday in summarizing Israel's 12-day air war with Iran. In the United States, an independent expert said a review of commercial satellite imagery showed only a small number of the approximately 30 Iranian missiles that penetrated Israel's air defenses managed to hit any militarily significant targets. Israel's air force struck over 900 targets and the military deeply damaged Iran's missile production during the war that ended with a US-brokered ceasefire, the official said. "The Iranian nuclear project suffered a major blow: The regime's ability to enrich uranium to 90% was neutralized for a prolonged period. Its current ability to produce a nuclear weapon core has been neutralized," the official said. Iran, which denies trying to build nuclear weapons, retaliated against the strikes with barrages of missiles on Israeli military sites and cities. Iran said it forced the end of the war by penetrating Israeli defenses. Iranian authorities said 627 people were killed in Iran, where the extent of the damage could not be independently confirmed because of tight restrictions on the media. Israeli authorities said 28 people were killed in Israel. Eveleth, the independent US expert, said Iran's missile forces were not accurate enough to destroy small military targets like US-made F-35 jet fighters in their shelters. "Because of this the only targets they can hit with regularity are large cities or industrial targets like the refinery at Haifa," he told Reuters. Iranian missile salvos, which were limited by Israeli airstrikes in Iran, did not have the density to achieve high rates of destruction, he wrote on X. "At the current level of performance, there is effectively nothing stopping Israel from conducting the same operation in the future with similar results," he wrote. In a statement on Friday, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said he had directed the military to draft plans to safeguard air superiority over Iran, prevent nuclear development and missile production, and address Iran's support for militant operations against Israel. Israel's military Chief of Staff Lieutenant General, Eyal Zamir, said on Friday the outcome in Iran could help advance Israeli objectives against the Iranian-backed Palestinian Hamas group in the Gaza Strip. Zamir told troops in Gaza an Israeli ground operation, known as "Gideon's Chariots," would in the near future achieve its goal of greater control of the Palestinian enclave and present options to Israel's government for further action.

Trump Tells Iran's Supreme Leader: ‘You Got Beat to Hell'
President Donald Trump on Friday scoffed at Ali Khamenei's heated warning to the US not to launch future strikes on Iran, as well as the Iranian supreme leader's assertion that Tehran "won the war" with Israel. Trump, in remarks to reporters and later in an extended statement on social media, said Khamenei's comments defied reality after 12 days of Israeli strikes and the US bombardment of three key nuclear sites inflicted severe damage on the country's nuclear program. The president suggested Khamenei's comments were unbecoming of Iran's most powerful political and religious figure. "Look, you're a man of great faith. A man who's highly respected in his country. You have to tell the truth," Trump said of Khamenei. "You got beat to hell." The US president spoke out a day after Khamenei insisted Tehran had delivered a "slap to America's face" by striking a US air base in Qatar and warned against further attacks by the US or Israel on Iran. Khamenei's pre-recorded statement, which aired on Iranian state television, was the first time that Iranians had heard directly from the supreme leader in days. The heated rhetoric from Trump and Khamenei continued as both leaders face difficult questions about the impact of the strikes. Trump and his aides have pushed back vociferously after an early damage assessment from the Defense Intelligence Agency became public and indicated that the US bombardment likely only set back Tehran's nuclear program by months. Asked if he would demand during expected talks with Iran that the International Atomic Energy Agency or some other organization be authorized to conduct inspections, Trump told reporters Iran would have to cooperate with the IAEA "or somebody that we respect, including ourselves." White House officials have said they expect to restart talks soon with Iran, though nothing has been scheduled. US Mideast envoy Steve Witkoff earlier this week said there has been direct and indirect communication between the countries. A sixth round of US-Iran negotiations was scheduled for earlier this month in Oman but was canceled after Israel attacked Iran. Trump expressed confidence that Iran's nuclear ambition has faded. "Can I tell you, they're exhausted. And Israel's exhausted, too," Trump said. He added, "The last thing they're thinking right now is nuclear."

US, Pakistan Discuss ‘Durable Peace' between Israel, Iran
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio explored the ways of ensuring 'a durable peace between Israel and Iran,' with Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif during a call on Thursday, according to Al Arabiya. US Achieved No Gains In his first public statement since the announcement of the ceasefire, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei declared victory over Israel that targeted Iran's nuclear facilities on June 13, according to The Associated Press. The Supreme Leader also stated that Iran has 'delivered a hand slap to America's face' on Thursday by attacking the US base in Qatar. He revealed that the US intervention in the war was basically driven by its feeling 'that if it did not intervene, the Zionist regime would be utterly destroyed.' However, the US had not achieved any gains from this war, he added.
