
Jennifer Horgan: Our obsession with youth is a way of denying death, but we should embrace it
Did you ever enter a contest to see who could lift a corpse? No? Not recently?
Maybe you wrestled over a corpse then, or played cards, handing the deceased their own hand. No? Not that one either.
Ok, last one - did you ever hide under a corpse, shaking it to scare the incoming mourners - especially the kids. No?
Well, don't worry. It's not you, it's me. In truth, these questions would only make sense to someone who lived in Ireland 100 years ago.
We called them wake games and right up until the middle of the last century, these farewells to our loved ones were packed full of mischief, merriment, and matchmaking.
It was a time for divine madness, drinking and kissing and the presence of mná caointe, keening women, who wailed and sang, lamenting our dead.
To give you more of a flavour, one game involved someone donning a collar and sitting in a corner to 'hear confessions'. The 'priest' would act horrified, imposing an embarrassing and severe penance, which had to be performed for all to see and enjoy.
Things got so bad that in 1927, the Synod of Maynooth 'forbade absolutely' unseemly and lewd behaviour around corpses. It all sounds a bit mad, doesn't it? Sex and death – all deeply Freudian.
If you've spent time over in England, you'll recognise that we've retained some of our ancestors' customs. Plenty of English people find our open coffin and open-door policies around death unsettling. Their upper lip seems to only get stiffer around stiffs.
Nonetheless, compared with 1925, Irish deaths in 2025 have become sober and sanitised affairs. Children are generally left out.
Last week, I went to a Seed talk with Marian Ó Tuama, a Psychotherapist, who warned that children are better off seeing dead bodies early, particularly the bodies of people they don't love.
At the removals and funerals I've most recently attended, children were kept at home unless a part of the immediate family. Bereaved children no longer see their peers in their grief. It happens away from their everyday realities.
And as for us adults, far from engaging in revelry, we stick to a very specific script. Lining up in perfectly managed and curated funeral homes we say we are 'Sorry for your loss' on repeat. Hands are held and hands are dropped, and then out the door we go again.
What's crazier? Playing games over a corpse or paying doctors and dentists to give Botox injections?
Death has become a sober, serious, adult-only affair. The madness of grief has drained from our communities, our practices. Stories and tributes are typed online rather than shared in person, in letters, or in our chat.
But before we start to think we're evolving towards sophistication, let me address our ancestors with questions us modern urbanites understand.
Tell me, great-grandmother Horgan, did you ever inject poison into your face? No, seriously, did you ever inject your face with something that would make you look younger than you are?
Ancestor of 100 years ago, your doctor or your dentist – did they ever put something in your face, Botox or fillers, to make you appear younger than you are?
What's crazier? Playing games over a corpse or paying doctors and dentists to give Botox injections?
Or put it another way – What's crazier? Accepting death as an inherent part of living and marking it as a whole community, or denying we age and die at all.
What's more concerning, the cheeky sneaky Botox or the obvious Botox?
According to a Women's Health and Wellbeing Survey, commissioned by the Irish Examiner, and involving over 1,000 women, 'one in 10 women states their GP offers cosmetic treatments and one in seven that their dentist does'.
What do you think? Might the people lining up for Botox be better off drinking and having sex around corpses? I know it sounds facetious but I'm deadly (pardon the pun) serious. We used to mix sex and death freely. Now we accentuate one and deny the other.
I'm convinced that our ancestors were onto something – that it's healthier to put death front and centre, to literally place the corpse at the centre of the party. Increasingly, we hide death away, pretending it is not coming closer and closer the longer we live.
Another study, this time carried out by University College London last year, found anxiety was the most reported problem among 511 Botox patients surveyed, with 85 people claiming they suffered it after the jab. I'm eager to know if they also suffered it before the jab.
A woman explaining why she gets Botox said to me recently that she does it to look less tired. The thing is – she is tired. Her body and face are tired from being a body and a face for over 40 years. It's a tiredness that's different from a phase, a mood, an episode.
Generational differences
The differences in attitudes to aging and dying are not only between us and our ancestors, however. Changes are also taking place between generations.
I chatted with a beautician this week about who comes into her salon.
'There's a huge difference between the attitudes of younger and older women when it comes to Botox and fillers,' she says.
Younger women want to look like they've had work done.
'They're proud of it. It's a sign of success – a badge of honour, that they can look like they've had their lips done.'
I must assume that the same goes for their foreheads, shined and buffed and glistening.
We all know, I mean rationally, that human skin has never been so shiny. We see it happening in front of us - these young women becoming the shiny plastic dolls they once played with as children.
Older women, and men, want to look natural, just not as tired.
What does that tell us about how we're evolving? What's more concerning, the cheeky sneaky Botox or the obvious Botox?
Is it possible we're moving from mild death anxiety (where on some level we know it's nonsense) to absolute death denial – where to look good, or cool, or current, is to look like something unhuman, something like AI.

Madonna's face is a good example – there is no suggestion that she is trying to look her age anymore. She's not even trying to look like a person anymore. She has a mask on, and it's completely unrelated to her biography.
The Irish Examiner Women's Health and Wellbeing Survey surprised me in one thing. It suggests that fewer women, fewer of our peers, are getting Botox than we think.
The survey reveals that 10% of the women interviewed had Botox, 6% fillers and 12% either treatment. However, most women (45%) believe that 'most women my age have undergone some form of cosmetic treatment'.
I wonder how interviewees interpreted the words 'cosmetic treatment'.
Death anxiety
Read between the lines, if the lines are still there, and it may be true that a lot of women are getting cosmetic treatments, just not Botox or fillers.
A lot of people, particularly people with money, are going for less invasive services like skin peeling, micro-needling and laser resurfacing. I suppose you might call it death anxiety light, or death anxiety for beginners. But it's still death anxiety, right?
You know, looking your best, looking less tired – covering up or reversing excessive living to stay sexy.
And I'll pre-empt the comments about dying your hair if I may.
Death anxiety is not something new. We have always tried to look younger. The earliest documented use of hair dye can be traced to Ancient Egypt, over 4,000 years ago.
It's just that our death anxiety is ramping up, and it's not necessarily good for us.
For anyone who cares, corpse-me is all for a party. Feel free to enjoy a smooch and a tickle around me; give me an old shake too if you fancy. I won't be looking. And if I am – I'm smiling.

A trip to Guernsey reveals tales of resistance, betrayal and survival under Nazi occupation
IT WAS hard to imagine what had happened here 85 years ago, as I walked past the solidly British Lloyds Bank and down the lively pedestrianised High Street in Guernsey's capital. Back then, on August 16, 1940, a fearsome-looking band of Nazi soldiers had passed that very spot in perfect marching step, signalling the start of five frightening years in which Adolf Hitler's stormtroopers would occupy their only piece of British soil during World War II: the Channel Islands. Few images will have stirred the pride of Nazi Germany's dictator more than that sight, in which the invaders' column was led by a uniformed British bobby, sporting the familiar dome-shaped 'custodian' helmet of the day. In the eyes of the wider world, it looked like the beginning of the end for Britain. Here was a major propaganda victory in which a prized piece of the British Empire jigsaw was under Hitler's control and, in his twisted vision, would soon be a launchpad for the expected overwhelming invasion of 'finished England'. How wrong he was. England, after the 'miraculous' evacuation of 350,000 troops from Dunkirk, was far from 'finished' under the indomitable leadership of Winston Churchill, who had decided the Channel Islands could not be defended without huge cost and loss of life, so withdrew his forces and allowed civilians to leave for the mainland if they wished – and almost 25,000 did so. But what happened to the defenceless 66,000 who stayed behind on Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney, Sark and tiny Herm? Did some risk their lives to fight back against the invaders? Or simply keep their heads down? Or, the worst option, collaborate and turn traitor? Well, I spent a week on pretty Guernsey delving into such secrets under a new World War II scheme in which tourists can relive those dark days in the shadow of the swastika. The truth emerged on tailored trails, guided walks and exhilarating high-speed boat trips with experts, as well as in the sometimes creepy confines of preserved Nazi blockhouses and museums. But I was also able to read through the ageing pages of personal diaries, history books and censored wartime newspapers in the fascinating Priaulx Local Studies Library. Here were stories and images of incredible courage – like the islanders who tapped into BBC bulletins on banned radios and circulated the news (they were betrayed by a man, thought to be Irish – see story below). But there were also traitors who took money for information, black marketeers profiting from hardship, officials who followed Nazi orders enthusiastically and, also, the reviled local women who had affairs with Nazi troops – the so-called 'Jerrybags'. Among the 24,429 people who remained on Guernsey to face the Germans, resistance was everywhere – often in small but dangerous gestures like the 'V for Victory' signs painted on countless walls and, sometimes, in the hiding of Jews and escaped slave workers which, like many such 'offences', carried the death penalty or deportation to a concentration camp. It is fascinating and humbling to follow their stories in the records, trails and museums and to wonder how any of us would have coped with those five years of mounting Nazi brutality and, toward the end, the grinding starvation as supplies ran out before the Germans on the islands finally surrendered on May 9, 1945 – 11 long and arduous months after the D-Day invasion of Europe the previous June. Of course, such a trip can also be combined with enjoyment of Guernsey's sweeping beaches, renowned hiking trails, quaint pubs, classy shopping and a wide array of cuisine – like the sumptuous seafood Thermidor at the Duke of Richmond Hotel, the comfortable base I shared with my partner and photographer Sue Mountjoy, or the mighty and succulent Tomahawk steak at the trendy Slaughterhouse restaurant on St Peter Port seafront. We also took the refreshing 20-minute ferry boat ride from St Peter Port to sweet little Herm, one of the smallest public islands in the archipelago with just 60 permanent residents, no cars or bicycles, and offering a decent pub after a brisk circular walk at one and a half miles long and half a mile wide. With little crime, friendly natives and a pace of life that is as laid-back as that of the golden cows that slumber in the rolling meadows, Guernsey truly takes you back in time – first to its dramatic wartime history, then to today's easy-going civility and a slower pace of life that many of us still crave. The Irishmen who fought for Hitler A SMALL number of Irishmen fought for the Nazis during World War II, including some who were in Guernsey during the German invasion. Among the most renowned cases is that of Leitrim-born Frank Stringer and James Brady, from Roscommon, who both ended up serving in the feared and brutal Waffen-SS until the end of the war in Berlin in 1945. Like thousands of other Irish teenagers, they had joined the British army for the travel and the pay before the war and happened to be in prison on Guernsey, after injuring a local policeman in a drunken punch-up, when the Nazis arrived. The pair were sent to a prisoner-of-war camp and then, like dozens of Irish captives, to the specialist Friesack centre, run by the Nazi Abwehr secret service, for pro-Nazi propaganda induction and explosives training. Both took part in a range of high-profile operations before Germany's defeat and, despite some debate about their enthusiasm for their roles, the pair of 'accidental Nazis' received heavy prison sentences. Another infamous Guernsey collaboration episode came a couple of years into the Nazi occupation and involved a mysterious traitor named 'Paddy'. Historians have debated the identity of 'Paddy' and whether or not he was a visiting Irishman, but the treachery that occurred centred on the Guernsey Underground News Service (GUNS), in which a group of courageous resisters distributed as many as 300 copies of an illegal news-sheet to local homes regularly. The information was culled from BBC bulletins at a time when the Nazis had banned radios and had given severe penalties to anyone caught with one. I worked in the 1970s with one of the distributors, Mick Robins – a Guernsey-born news editor in Lincolnshire – who never spoke about his bravery in riding his bike round local homes to post the newsletters after nightly curfews, risking being shot, while he was still a young boy. The GUNS team were eventually caught and sent to appalling Nazi prisons, where several died and one more succumbed soon after his release. A survivor, though, Guernsey journalist Frank Falla returned home to write a memoir, The Silent War , in which he describes the GUNS betrayal by the mysterious 'Paddy', without naming him. Clodagh Finn: Lessons to save us from reinventing the wheel in the fight for equality
Here is a little-known fact about the setting up of the Rape Crisis Centre in Ireland. When asked, Charlie Haughey, then a TD, happily and speedily went about obtaining a telephone service – and 'a new-fangled answering machine' – for the nascent helpline. 'I will be glad to assist you,' he wrote in a letter to founder member Evelyn Conlon in September 1978, 'and if you let me have the address of the centre I will get in touch with the Minister of State at the Department of Posts and Telegraphs on your behalf.' Then, Evelyn Conlon, Anne O'Donnell, the centre's first administrator, and a group of 19 volunteers went about, first, learning how to use the answering machine and, once they got 'the amazed hang of it', opening the lines. It was February 19, 1979. 'We learned, ferociously, and on their feet, Everything from listening, advocating, accompanying to Garda stations, attending court,' Conlon writes in After the Train (UCD Press), a gloriously affirming collection of essays that sets out not only what was wrong in Irish society 50 years ago but, more importantly, how it was righted. Charlie Haughey's contribution is mentioned in the book as an aside, but it somehow jumped out at this reader as a vivid example of what can happen when someone identifies an issue, speaks up and then goes about doing something to change it. The power and effectiveness of that three-step dance is evident on every page of this account of what happened after the famous contraceptive train from Dublin to Belfast jolted a Catholic country into a conversation about contraception and bodily autonomy. I like to think that momentous outing in 1971 by the Irish Women's Liberation Movement to illegally import contraceptives to Dublin is universally remembered (please tell me that it is), but what has certainly fallen below the radar is the fearless work carried out by the members of Irishwomen United (IWU) in the years that followed. Hands up, now. Which of you can outline the work done by this group of women – 'wailers broadcasting the death of the old regime' – who plotted volcanic change during their Sunday afternoon meetings in an upper room in 12 Pembroke Street in Dublin? You won't find it in the history books, apart from a dismissive paragraph here or there; examples of the kind of 'stalwart myopia' that inflamed writer Evelyn Conlon to join forces with academic Rebecca Pelan to gather the voices of the women who were there. Picture: UCD Press In 20 essays, they recall the crackling energy, the excitement and the considerable trepidation of coming together to tease out the issues of the day – 'the taboos, restrictions, inequalities, discriminations, exclusions, violence and coercion that dogged our lives', to quote Ger Moane's illustrative and profoundly dispiriting list. One of those restrictions, banal and accepted at the time, was the widespread refusal to serve women pints in pubs. Here, from Gaye Cunningham, is a wonderful description of how the women who went before us, including the late, great Nell McCafferty, went about changing that: [Nell] went into one of the pubs that refused to serve women pints and, accompanied by a group of 30 or so women, ordered brandies. When the drinks were served, she ordered a pint of Guinness; when the barman refused to serve, they refused to pay. It was, writes Cunningham, one of the lighter, more madcap moments in the history of the women's movement, although there was certainly something madcap and magnificent about the day – July 24, 1974 – a band of IWU members 'invaded' the all-male bathing spot, the Forty Foot, in south county Dublin. They invaded the 'men-only' Fitzwilliam Tennis Club too and, in 1976, they burst into the Federated Union of Employers headquarters to campaign for equal pay. Looking back, Mary Doran writes: 'I am amazed at our confidence and how we felt that the end justified the means.' And what fearlessness. In 1973, Maura O'Dea, a single mother, wrote a letter to a newspaper in an attempt to get in touch with other 'unmarried mothers', to use the phrase of the time, who had kept their babies as well as those who had been forced to give them up for adoption. It was the start of Cherish, now One Family, an organisation that not only showed there was such a thing as lone parenting but advocated to improve their rights. The IWU took a stand on a wide range of issues, campaigning for access to free contraception, LGBT+ rights, bodily autonomy and equal pay. As Mary Dorcey writes: 'We women's liberationists and gay activists, passionate but inexperienced, transformed our country from the ground up… We were the first generation to refuse to emigrate, or to be silenced, or banished. We insisted on making noise and making our presence felt.' They made space for the new, or rather the shock of the new. For the first time, publishing houses (Attic Press and Arlen House) laid open the 'untravelled terrain' of writing about the body and female experience. Picture via Evelyn Conlon private collection Another Mary (O'Donnell, poet and author of the excellent, just out Walking Ghosts, Mercier Press) recalls the influence of norm-breaking poet Eavan Boland: 'Until then, the body had not been permitted space in poetry or literature. So those of us who included aspects of feminine experience in our writing were really like frontier women heading into the unknown.' Those frontier women carved out new pathways and set up a number of organisations that still exist today – the aforementioned Rape Crisis Centre and the Well Woman Centre to mention two. In acknowledging, remembering and celebrating that fevered time, After the Train also makes it clear that feminism did not start with them. It quotes the incomparable Hilda Tweedy, founder member of the Irish Housewives Association and author of A Link in the Chain: So many people think that the women's movement was born on some mystical date in 1970, when it had actually been a long continuous battle… each generation adding something to the last. That is really important to remember in a week when Women's Aid reported the highest level of disclosure of domestic abuse in its 50-year history. It, like so many other feminist organisations, has its roots in those mould-breaking days of the 1970s. (Indeed, Women's Aid gave the fledgling Rape Crisis Centre a room in its building in Harcourt Terrace.) At a time when it seems we have made no progress, particularly when it comes to the epidemic of violence against women, it's important to remember what went before. As Evelyn Conlon so eloquently puts it: '… 'We always need to keep our eyes on the history books, because every time we take our eye off the true telling of what happened, we create the necessity to begin inventing the wheel all over again.' The wheel, though it might not feel like it, is indeed turning. Take this single example. When the Well Woman centre opened its doors in 1978, it 'elicited zero media coverage', writes founder Anne Connolly. Not a line. News of it made the papers only when four anti-abortionists picketed the clinic, a backfiring protest if ever there was one as it gave the centre the kind of publicity it could never afford. Now, at least, the issues ignored in the 1970s are mainstream news. On the same day that Women's Aid CEO Sarah Benson was invited to speak at length on the flagship Six One News, a documentary about Natasha O'Brien, the woman randomly and brutally attacked on the street by ex-soldier Cathal Crotty, aired on RTÉ. 'Don't bite your tongue,' she said, a mantra needed as much now as it ever was. Just remember, though, that we don't need to reinvent the wheel. We are links in a very long and interconnected chain.
