
Is inflation good or bad for your purchasing power? Four in 10 Irish people don't know
An overwhelming majority of Irish adults believe they have an 'average' or 'high' level of financial literacy but more than 40% could not correctly answer a Junior Cert level business sample exam question on the impact of inflation on household purchasing power, a new research showed.
The PTSB 'Reflecting Ireland' research revealed 90% of respondents think they have 'average' or 'high' financial literacy but only 58% identified that high inflation is bad for their purchasing power, with 27% incorrectly saying it is positive for them, 10% incorrectly saying it would remain the same, and 5% saying it makes their personal finances more stable.
Just under 10% of survey respondents said their financial literacy is low. This cohort reported feeling down about their finances and feeling uncomfortable talking about money to family and friends. Some 40% of respondents cited the belief that feelings of embarrassment can be a key barrier to improving financial understanding.
Only 53% of people are comfortable talking to a friend or family member about money.
'These results highlight that support is needed to educate people on the importance of financial literacy in order to increase financial resilience, inclusion, and protection against financial scams," said PTSB chief sustainability and corporate affairs officer Leontia Fannin.
Almost half (47%) of respondents felt technology has helped them to better understand fees and charges, financial products and services available, and their personal spending habits. This increases to an average of 57% for 18-24-year-olds. Those over-55 are the least likely group to have used technology to help understand their finances better.
Regarding the rise of artificial intelligence, 27% of respondents said they would be comfortable getting AI-generated advice on how to better manage their money (up from 24% last year). This increases further to 42% for 25-34-year-olds.
"People rating themselves with high financial literacy are more confident about the benefits of AI and technology in building knowledge and generating advice. This suggests an opportunity for people to embrace digital tools to support them in their day-to-day budgeting and financial awareness," said Ms Fannin.

Major slump in tourist spending ‘part of ongoing trend'
The Irish tourist industry suffered a multi-million-euro hit due to how much foreign visitors spent in May. Some 560,500 tourists visited during the month, down 8% on May 2024. However, worryingly, excluding plane and ferry tickets, visitors spent €127 million less, with the total of €477 million down by more than a fifth compared with May last year. These challenges are reflected right across our tourism industry at a time when we must remain vigilant to other difficult headwinds.' 'There are longer-term headwinds to take account of – including geopolitical and macroeconomic uncertainty, which can lead to consumers weighing up their holiday choices… 'The aviation industry is investing in Ireland, given there will be 6% more air seat capacity on routes this summer versus last summer, 10% more from North America, a key market, with new routes like Detroit, Nashville and Indianapolis opening up, as well as new European routes like Stuttgart to Dublin and Bilbao to Cork.' Some 560,500 visitors, who spent an average of €1,186 including fares, came to Ireland in May, down 10% on last May but up 2% on May 2023. Travel expert Eoghan Corry said: 'At the moment we're bulletproof; no matter what happens in Ireland our image is so strong, thanks to the likes of rom-com Irish Wish with Lindsay Lohan and Netflix, and all of that huge imagery, it's got millions of views.'

Ireland's manufacturing sector improved at fastest rate in more than three years last month
The State's manufacturing sector improved at its fastest rate in more than three years last month, new data from AIB show. The bank said the sector enjoyed an accelerated pace of job creation and renewed stock building, alongside 'robust yet slightly slower rates' of production and new order growth. Strengthening business conditions contributed to the steepest rise in input buying since April 2022. Meanwhile, business activity expectations for the year ahead improved further from the low point seen in April, with confidence hitting a five-month high despite concerns about rising global economic uncertainty. READ MORE AIB's headline PMI figure, which is derived from indicators for new orders, output, employment, suppliers' delivery times, and stocks of purchases, climbed to 53.7 from 52.6 in May. Any figure greater than 50 indicates overall improvement of the sector. June was the sixth month in a row that the sector registered an improvement in conditions. Moreover, the latest reading was the highest since May 2022 and signalled 'a solid rate of expansion', AIB said. Faster job creation, a rebound in stocks of purchases and longer lead times for supplier deliveries all boosted the headline figure, which offset slight slowdowns in both output and new business growth. June data signalled a strong rise in production volumes, but the rate of expansion eased further from April's three-year high. Irish manufacturers mostly commented on an uplift to production schedules in response to rising demand and strong sales pipelines. Total new work increased for the sixth consecutive month and the rate of growth was only fractionally lower than in May. Survey respondents mostly cited improving domestic demand. Meanwhile, elevated global business uncertainty and subdued demand in big export markets contributed to another decline in new work from abroad. However, the rate of contraction eased considerably since the previous survey period. Manufacturing companies stepped up their staff hiring, with the rate of job creation accelerating for the third month running to its strongest since June 2022. Higher levels of employment were attributed to greater workloads, long-term business expansion plans and forthcoming new project starts. Backlogs of work nonetheless fell for the fourth consecutive month, 'thereby suggesting a lack of pressure on business capacity'. Rising demand and efforts to rebuild inventories contributed to a sharp increase in purchasing activity. Stocks of purchases rose for the first time in 10 months. Stock building 'partly reflected efforts to mitigate lengthening delivery times' from vendors, AIB said. However, supplier delays were the most widespread since January amid reports of worsening transportation availability. Despite strengthening demand for manufacturing items and less favourable supply conditions, the latest survey indicated a further slowdown in input cost inflation. Purchasing prices increased at the weakest pace since December. Efforts to alleviate squeezed margins nonetheless meant that factory gate charges rose to the greatest extent for four months. Looking ahead, manufacturers remained optimistic about their growth prospects over the next 12 months. Around 44 per cent predicted a rise in production volumes, while only 8 per cent anticipated a decline.

Irish food investment group buys Germany's Munsterland
The German firm, founded more than a 100 years ago, is a market leader in non-carbonated ready-to-drink beverages for international brands. Its iced coffees, protein drinks and natural energy teas are sold in more than 20 countries. It has been acquired by Ireland-based Kerga. Kerga is jointly owned by BiaVest and Development Capital, an Irish growth capital fund supporting scaling Irish companies BiaVest is headed by co-founders Hilliard Lombard and David McKernan. Development Capital was founded by Andrew Bourg and Sinéad Heaney. This acquisition is another major step forward in executing Kerga's European growth strategy In 2023, BiaVest also acquired the leading German pasta manufacturer Riesa Nudeln. Kerga said it sees significant growth potential with Munsterland across both existing and new customers and markets. 'This acquisition is another major step forward in executing Kerga's European growth strategy,' said Kerga chief executive Alan Cunningham. 'We have a clear roadmap for further acquisitions and are focused on building a portfolio of premium brands and manufacturing assets in high-growth categories,' he added. Kerga added that the acquisition complements its investment in Nomadic Foods and further strengthens its overall manufacturing and market access infrastructure. Based in Co Donegal, Nomadic Foods makes a range of yoghurts and yoghurt-based drinks. Kerga said the food firm is delivering strong growth in the UK and Irish markets and that a key strategy for Nomadic is to expand internationally. Mr Cunningham is also the co-founder and CEO of Nomadic Foods. He previously held roles with companies including Donegal Investment Group and Kerry Group. Mr Lombard, the chairperson of Kerga, said that following the acquisition of Munsterland, the Irish food group expects to sell more than 100 million units of product across Europe next year. He added that Kerga continues to hunt for acquisitions. 'Our acquisition strategy targets businesses with proven revenues of €20m-plus, strong track records, and clear scope for innovation and market expansion,' he said. Kerga generated revenue of €30m in 2023, which compared to €27.7m the previous year. It posted a pre-tax profit of €2.1m in 2023, which was up from the €1.5m it made in 2022. The 2023 accounts primarily reflected Kerga's investment in Nomadic Foods. Of its revenue that year, €25.9m was generated in the UK, €4m in Ireland and €99,000 in other European markets.
