Bihar to launch new solar energy policy in 15 days to boost renewable investments
Deputy CM Samrat Choudhary on Friday announced that the state government will introduce a new policy on solar energy and pump power storage within the next 15 days. Speaking at the Renewable Energy Expo held at the Patna Planetarium, he said the policy would be designed to attract both private and public sector investment in the state's renewable energy sector.
Choudhary, who also holds the finance portfolio, made the announcement on behalf of CM Nitish Kumar. "Pump power storage and solar energy have been given special priority in the new policy," he said. Choudhary added that the govt is making continuous efforts to promote other forms of renewable energy, especially solar. He also revealed that the state currently provides an annual subsidy of ₹15,000 crore to ensure affordable electricity for its residents.
Highlighting Bihar's progress in electrification, Choudhary said, "While only 17 lakh families had access to electricity two decades ago, the number has now grown to 2.14 crore families, who are receiving cheap and uninterrupted power." He credited CM Nitish Kumar and energy minister Bijendra Yadav for making electricity available in Bihar at the lowest rate in the country.
Under the
Pradhan Mantri Kusum Yojana
, the govt plans to expedite the connection of agricultural pumps to solar energy and the extension of grid-connected solar power to rural areas. The provision of solar-powered pumps to farmers and mini-grid-based electricity in remote regions is also under consideration.

, organised by the Bihar Industries Association, as not only a platform for technical exchange but also a key step towards shaping Bihar's future in sustainable development.

Rupee falls 23 paise to close at 85.73 against U.S. dollar
The rupee pared initial gains and settled for the day in the negative territory, down 23 paise at 85.73 (provisional) against the U.S. dollar on Monday (June 30, 2025), on weak domestic equities and a bounce back in crude oil prices. Forex traders said the rupee opened in the positive on improved global risk sentiments; however, a negative trend in domestic equities dented investor sentiments and dragged down the local unit. At the interbank foreign exchange, the rupee opened at 85.48 against the U.S. dollar and witnessed an intraday high of 85.44 and low of 85.77 before settling at 85.73 (provisional), down 23 paise from its previous close. On Friday (June 27, 2025), the rupee rose 22 paise to close at 85.50 against the greenback. 'Indian rupee declined on Monday on weak domestic equities and a bounce back in crude oil prices. Month-end dollar demand also pressured the domestic currency,' said Anuj Choudhary, Research Analyst at Mirae Asset Sharekhan. However, a weak tone in the U.S. dollar prevented a sharp fall in the rupee. The U.S. dollar fell on better-than-expected inflation data from the U.S., Mr. Choudhary said. 'We expect the rupee to gain on weakness in the U.S. dollar in improved global risk sentiments. However, any recovery in crude oil prices may cap sharp gains,' Mr. Choudhary said, adding, 'USD-INR spot price is expected to trade in a range of 85.30 to 85.85'. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, fell 0.26% to 97.14. Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, went down 0.28% to $67.58 per barrel in futures trade. In the domestic equity market, the 30-share BSE Sensex fell 452.44 points, or 0.54%, to close at 83,606.46, while the Nifty declined 120.75 points, or 0.47%, to 25,517.05. Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) purchased equities worth ₹1,397.02 crore on a net basis on Friday (June 27, 2025), according to exchange data. Meanwhile, India's forex reserves dropped $1.01 billion to $697.93 billion during the week ended June 20, the Reserve Bank of India said on Friday (June 27, 2025). In the previous week, the reserves had jumped $2.29 billion to $698.95 billion. Forex reserves had touched an all-time high of $704.885 billion in September 2024.

Vizag lacks premier training institutes for Engg & Tech students
The rapidly developing Visakhapatnam city lacks premier training institutes for engineering and technology students as they move to other places like Hyderabad and Bangalore to explore their knowledge in advanced courses as per the market demand. The existing educational institutions also lack adequate laboratories for the specific domains chosen by the students. Stakeholders including the state and central governments have been urged to focus on these major challenges in Visakhapatnam, which is the largest city in AP, and the governments are also focusing on making the city the Financial Capital. A (Electronics) student S. Nitish Kumar said, 'I did not find any options to go for training in my specific domains in the city. My seniors and faculty suggested me to join institutes like C-DAC, but did not find any such institute. It would be useful and beneficial for many students like me if the state government focuses on setting up such institutes.' C-DAC (Centre for Development of Advanced Computing) is the premier scientific institute of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, known for its advanced computing and IT training programmes. It offers various postgraduate diploma courses, including the popular PG-DAC (Post Graduate Diploma in Advanced Computing), which aims to bridge the industry-academic skill gap. Agreeing with Mr. Nitish, GITAM Deemed-to-be University's Electrical, Electronics & Communications Department P. Bharani Chandra Kumar, said, 'Yes, Visakhapatnam does not have at least one leading training institute. As per the current market conditions, the city urgently needs a premier training institute related to Artificial Intelligence, as AI is currently an adjunct to every B. Tech program. Every student should have knowledge of Computer Science and its advanced applications and AI.' Some educationists are of the opinion that engineering education should not rely solely on theory, but should emphasise practical learning through well-equipped laboratories. Advanced laboratories should be created, and the existing laboratories should be continuously upgraded and guided by industry-experienced teaching professors as outlined in the National Education Policy. 'Strengthening the laboratory infrastructure will help students acquire better practical skills and be industry-ready without the need for external training elsewhere. If the laboratories are properly equipped, students can acquire knowledge at the college level itself. To be honest, no educational institution, including government and private ones, has such advanced laboratories with expertise in the laboratory itself in Visakhapatnam,' said a senior professor from Andhra University, who did not want to be named. Speaking to The Hindu, Rushikonda IT Park Association vice-president O. Naresh Kumar, said, 'The proposal for a C-DAC Visakhapatnam centre was made in 2014 itself, but there has been no progress even today. Since the current Centre-State relations are good due to the coalition government, this is the right time to focus on it. Apart from C-DAC, Vizag also needs a Nixi, national internet exchange of India.' 5k mango varieties on display as CM opens Aam Mahotsav
1 2 Patna: From sweet-smelling Gulabkhas to the juicy Langra and royal Alphonso, the state's much-loved mangoes are back in the spotlight at the two-day Aam Mahotsav 2025, inaugurated by CM Nitish Kumar at Gyan Bhawan here on Saturday. The event celebrates the state's rich mango-growing heritage while bringing thousands of varieties and stakeholders together on a single platform. Organised by the directorate of horticulture, the festival connects farmers, traders, scientists, processors and exporters to strengthen Bihar's mango market. Over 5,000 mangoes from across the state, produced by over 800 farmers, are on display at the event. Featured varieties include Malda, Zardaloo, Zarda, Dashahri, Krishnbhoj, Husn-e-Ara, Benazir, Alphonso and Fazli. Deputy CM Vijay Kumar Sinha, who also heads the agriculture department, said, "Mango production has increased by 82% compared to 2007-08. To support this growth, we have launched the Mango Development Scheme, focusing on quality production. Farmers are being trained in modern techniques through Krishi Vigyan Kendras and the Centre of Excellence for Mango in Vaishali." Bihar currently cultivates mangoes over 1.65 lakh hectares, yielding 15.8 lakh metric tonnes. In 2024-25 alone, 2,235 metric tonnes of mangoes and pulp were exported. To boost international presence, APEDA is planning buyer-seller meets in the UAE and Saudi Arabia. Rakesh Kumar, deputy director of horticulture, said, "This year's theme is rejuvenation of old mango orchards. We plan to increase vertical production using top-working and intercropping techniques, allowing a single plant to yield multiple varieties." The event also acts as a platform for knowledge exchange with scientists offering technical advice on orchard rejuvenation. Principal secretary of agriculture, Pankaj Kumar, stressed promoting innovation and entrepreneurship to boost farmers' incomes. A farmer competition rewards the best mangoes and products. "Aam Mahotsav empowers rural women like us to showcase our products to a larger audience," said Sangeeta Gupta from Rohtas, who displayed pickles, jellies and more.
