Healthcare jobs are practically recession-proof, says Indeed—here's how to get in and make over $100K
Dark clouds are storming over America's markets—threatening to drastically raise prices and eliminate jobs. Luckily, one industry has typically buoyed during recessionary times.
'Healthcare is a classic recession-resistant industry because medical care is always in demand,' Priya Rathod, career expert at Indeed, tells Fortune. And it may be the safest way to hold down a job with a potential six-figure starting salary right now.
New data from the careers platform shows that home health, doctor, and nursing job postings have hit a combined 162% growth since pre-pandemic.
Physician and surgeon jobs represent the greatest boost in the field, as open roles have skyrocketed 90% since pre-pandemic years. Meanwhile, other industries are suffering; arts and entertainment job postings have especially plummeted since 2022, falling 10% overall from pre-COVID-19 levels.
People will always need their yearly check-ups, routine medical care, and emergency hospital on speed dial—no matter how rough the economy is.
'During the 2007–2009 Great Recession, healthcare employment continued to grow even as overall U.S. payrolls shrank,' Rathod says, and that this is 'A sign that the sector is 'resistant to, if not immune from' traditional economic downturns, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.'
America also has a rapidly aging population, driving the need for services like home health, personal care, surgeon, and physician jobs. Healthcare employment is expected to swell by roughly 1.9 million job openings annually over the next decade, according to BLS data.
Danielle LeVeck, a nurse of over 15 years, tells Fortune she has witnessed her profession's growth in action. She switched career tracks from PR to nursing in 2007, hoping for steady employment. She's never worried about being unemployed since, and is comforted by the routine and safety of her career.
'I've never worried, since becoming a nurse, that I wouldn't have a job. That sense of security is very important to me,' LeVeck says. 'Working with the same people every day, going to work and helping people, it's good for me.'
There's another sticky situation the healthcare industry naturally skirts: the impact of AI on jobs. Workers have been wringing their hands over the reality that advanced tech is coming for their roles. But medical staffers don't have to lose sleep; healthcare is one of the key industries expected to grow amid the U.S.'s AI-driven business landscape disruption, according to a 2024 report from McKinsey. AI still can't perform a majority of tasks that healthcare workers can—like sterilizing surgical equipment, or administering at-home aid.
These recession and AI-proof jobs aren't just the golden ticket to a steady career—but a six-figure salary, if you play your cards right.
'You have to have experience, you have to be living in the right place, and working at the right place. The pay discrepancy for nurses is wide,' LeVeck says.
When she started as a bedside nurse in 2011, her initial wages were $45,000 a year, and her final role in that niche paid $67,000 annually. LeVeck says it is possible to earn over $100,000 as a bedside nurse, but that her later job as a nurse practitioner is more apt to make six figures as a starting salary. The real money lies in private hospitals and care centers as opposed to large, research-based hospitals—there's typically a lighter workload, but higher competition for these jobs that nobody wants to leave.
Nursing is just one of the several recession-proof jobs with the chance to earn six figures. Physicians can earn over $200,000 annually, and doctors like general practitioners rake in $140,000 yearly. LeVeck says making the right connections can be the make-or-break for healthcare professionals to secure high-paying roles—networking is how she's landed every job in her career.
Rathod echoes the importance of connection building. She also recommends job-seekers optimize their resumes to highlight healthcare-relevant skills and gain credentials like a certified nursing assistant (CNA) license or an IT security certificate. But at a baseline level, simply getting your foot in the door is a good first step.
'Don't hesitate to start in an adjacent or entry-level role such as an administrative job at a hospital,' Rathod says. 'Demonstrating initiative and flexibility can help you stand out, even in crowded applicant pools.'

Here's what powered the stock market higher during its short and sweet record week
Short and sweet: That was this week's stock market in a nutshell. The second half of the year kicked off in record style, with both the S & P 500 and the Nasdaq closing at multiple all-time highs, including in Thursday's holiday-shortened session. The U.S. stock market is closed on Friday for the Fourth of July. Extending its stunning comeback from its April sell-off, Club stock Nvidia broke all kinds of records this week as its market value topped $3.9 trillion on Thursday. It ended the day up 1.3% at $159.34 a share, good for a $3.89 trillion market cap. To fully appreciate the current bullishness on Wall Street, we have to look back on the volatile second quarter in the market, which ended Monday. Considering the Nasdaq lost over 12% in the first week of the quarter on President Donald Trump's "reciprocal" tariff announcement, it was incredible to see the tech-heavy index close out the April-to-June period with a 17.75% gain. That was the Nasdaq's best quarterly performance since the early days of Covid, when it gained over 30% in the second quarter of 2020, as the Federal Reserve cut interest rates to zero and pumped money into the economy to prevent economic Armageddon from the pandemic. The S & P 500, meanwhile, advanced 10.57% in this year's second quarter, recovering from a greater-than-11% decline in the first week of April. The board market index saw its best quarter since Q4 of 2023, when it gained 11.24%. Eight out of the 11 sectors advanced in the April-to-June period, with technology leading the way with 23.5% gain. The worst performing sector was energy, which lost 9.37% in Q2, its worst quarter since Q3 of 2020. The bulk of the losses in energy came in the waning days of the second quarter when oil prices tanked following the U.S. bombing of three Iranian nuclear sites. The market deemed the U.S. involvement in the Israel-Iran conflict as a non-systemic risk and West Texas Intermediate crude sank nearly 9% for the quarter. In the absence of any major headlines out of the Mideast and Trump's Wednesday announcement of a framework for a trade deal with Vietnam, the S & P 500 and Nasdaq each advanced for the week, up 1.7% and 1.6%, respectively. Capitol Hill is on the precipice of delivering the president a major legislative victory, with the final passage of the "big, beautiful bill" of spending priorities and tax cuts expected soon after clearing a key procedural vote in the House . Ironically, a strong jobs report Thursday cut both ways for the president. On the one hand, more hiring and a lower unemployment rate shows the resiliency of the economy in the face of the tariff and geopolitical uncertainty. That was a win for Trump. But on the other hand, strength in the economy weakens the president's argument for immediate Federal Reserve interest rates cuts. In fact, on the eve of the government's June employment report and following a much weaker-than-expected ADP private-sector jobs reading, the president posted on social media that Fed Chairman Jerome Powell should resign. Trump was quiet on the rate front on Thursday. That's because payrolls for last month grew by 147,000, much more than the Dow Jones estimate for 110,000. The nation's unemployment rate in June dipped to 4.1% when a slight uptick to 4.3% had been expected. To be sure, much of that unemployment rate decline can be attributed to fewer people working or looking for jobs. Average hourly earnings for last month increased by a less-than-expected 3.7% versus the year0ago period and were below the 3.8% gain seen in May. This week, we got positive updates from the banks, which were free to update capital allocation plans following the conclusion of the Fed's stress tests. Club holdings Goldman Sachs and Wells Fargo were the two standout winners this year, and both of them increased their dividends . Goldman hiked its quarterly payout by 33% to $4 per share. Wells Fargo boosted its dividend 12.5% to 45 cents per share. For Wells, the stress test was just one more bit of good news since the 2018 Fed-imposed $1.95 trillion asset cap was lifted early last month. Another positive update within the portfolio came Monday when Jim Cramer interviewed Amazon CEO Andy Jassy on "Mad Money." In the wide-ranging interview, Jassy clearly laid out the massive opportunity he sees in artificial intelligence, as well its long-term bets such as its Project Kuiper satellite internet service. Jim is optimistic that Kuiper could eventually help Amazon's Prime program add more members. The interview came ahead of the company's first-ever four-day Prime Day, which kicks off Tuesday and goes to Friday. Over at Meta Platforms, we learned more about CEO Mark Zuckerberg's "superintelligence" ambitions, as he authored a memo to employees explaining the new internal structure for AI research at the company. As we wrote in an analysis piece Tuesday, Zuckerberg's costly push to hire the best and brightest AI minds hasn't cost Meta stock yet because investors believe the payoff will be worth it. Home Depot , meanwhile, announced that Monday that it would acquire GMS, a building materials distributor that specializes in products such as drywall, steel studs and insulation. Including debt, the deal gives GMS an enterprise valuation of $5.5 billion. While we understand Home Depot's desire to push further into the world of professional contractors — building on last year's pricey takeover of SRS Distribution — Jim said he wishes the money spent on GMS was instead spent repurchasing stock because he believes Home Depot shares are considerably undervalued. Finally, the S & P Short Range Oscillator ended Thursday's session even further into overbought territory at 8.25% (the threshold to determine overbought or oversold conditions is plus or minus 4%, respectively). While markets can stay overbought for a while, we like to look for areas to raise cash when we reach these levels as they indicate a near-term pullback is increasingly likely. Movie theater chain with locations in 8 states files for bankruptcy again
(WGN) – For the second time in five years, Cinemex Holdings USA has filed for bankruptcy. The company, which owns the CMX Cinemas movie theater chain, announced the move earlier this month. Cinemex Holdings USA is now seeking to restructure its business operations 'with the support of its secured lender,' according to a release. 'CMX currently anticipates emerging from Subchapter V during the first part of the third quarter of 2025 and is confident that a comprehensive financial restructuring is in the best interests of CMX, its stakeholders, and business partners overall,' reads the release. The dine-in movie theater chain has a total of 28 locations across eight states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Minnesota, North Carolina, Ohio and Virginia. Despite the filing, CMX says it plans to operate 'business as usual' at its locations. 'CMX continues to welcome customers to its cinemas as usual, and this will not change during the Subchapter V proceedings,' the release said. The company expects to emerge from bankruptcy proceedings in the third quarter of the 2025 fiscal year. Cinemex Holdings USA, which itself is owned by the Mexican theater chain Cinemex, opened its first CMX Cinemas theater in the United States in Miami, Florida, in 2017. CMX currently employs around 1,400 people, according to Cinemex's estimates. CMX Cinemas had also filed for bankruptcy once before, in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Strong June jobs report won't sway Fed on rate cuts: Analyst
The US labor market showed more resilience than expected in June, complicating the interest rate outlook for the Federal Reserve just as cracks in the economy are starting to widen. The economy added 147,000 nonfarm payroll jobs last month, topping the Dow Jones consensus of 110,000, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. The unemployment rate held steady at 4.1%, better than forecasts for a rise to 4.3%. Markets saw initial data as a sign of economic resilience, but the future is still cloudy. 'This was a good number for today,' George Goncalves, head of US macro strategy at MUFG, said Thursday on Yahoo Finance's 'Opening Bid.' "There are still big cracks in the labor market, and we shouldn't overread this report." Goncalves noted that many of the job gains came from non-private sectors, suggesting that underlying hiring momentum in the broader economy remains weak. 'It's a better-than-expected number, sure, and it likely keeps the Fed in a wait-and-see mode,' he said. However, continued weakness in consumer spending and a rise in jobless claims are signs of a cooling economy, per Goncalves. 'In our view, the Fed is still about 100 basis points too tight.' 'We're seeing substitution effects or exporters eating some of the costs. Inflation just doesn't seem like the main issue anymore, it's really about jobs.' There are risks if the Fed waits too long, as consumers are clearly feeling fatigued and stretched, Goncalves wrote in a note prior to Thursday's job report. "Consumer spending trends are falling fast to the lowest level in a decade," he said. MUFG's base claim remains that the Fed cuts rates in July, but today's job upside may delay the action until September. The fastest-growing line of the government's balance sheet is interest expense, Goncalves said, adding that there is a real economic case for lower rates, even if the Fed waits another meeting or two. Read more: How jobs, inflation, and the Fed are all related On the policy front, Goncalves acknowledged the Trump administration has racked up some victories, such as finalized trade deals with the UK and Vietnam, and progress on the sprawling One Big, Beautiful Bill. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has called on lawmakers to eliminate the Section 899 provision, commonly known as the 'revenge tax." If passed, the legislation could unlock new federal spending just as the economy begins to stumble, or potentially overheat again, depending on how quickly it gains traction. 'Like it or not, the deals are happening,' Goncalves said. 'The big, beautiful bill will likely pass at some point.' He warned that a short-term boost isn't guaranteed and there may be an economic "gap" during retooling, emphasizing the importance of continued fiscal support.
