What is US citizenship test? What changes Trump administration is bringing to make it tougher

USCIS new director said the present US citizenship is easy and can be memorized. The US citizenship test, officially known as the Naturalization test, is an examination that an applicant has to take to become a naturalized American citizen. This test is not for green card holders unless they are applying for citizenship. The new director of the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service said the existing test is too easy and the answers can be memorized. The Donald Trump administration is planning to bring back the 2020 version of the test. US Citizenship test First, the applicants have to submit Form N-400 seeking for naturalization. They need to pass a background check and meet residency and other requirements. Then there have to attend an interview where they take two tests: English and a civic test. In the civic test, there are 100 questions; the officer asks the applicant 10 and the applicant must answer at least six correctly. During the first term of Donald Trump, there was a new rule for a very brief time where there are 128 questions; applicants are asked 20 and they must get at least 12 right. The USCIS is planning to bring back some version of this type of test. Before 2008, the test was random but the Bush administration introduced the 6 out of 10 questions benchmark. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Angola: New Senior Homes (Prices May Surprise You) Senior Apartments | Search Ads Search Now Undo USCIS director said the present version is not really "comforting with the spirit of the law". Sweeping H-1B changes The development regarding the US citizenship test comes as the Department of Homeland Security proposed sweeping changes for the H-1B visa program that allows US companies to hire foreign workers. According to the proposed changes, H-1B will not be for entry-level workers. It will be only for high-skilled jobs for which there will higher salary. If this becomes implemented, US graduates will not lose out jobs in the entry level and tech companies will not be able to hire foreign workers at a lower wage.

JD Vance torches Microsoft for axing US jobs while doubling down on H-1B visas

JD Vance, the Vice President, criticized Microsoft Corp. and other big tech companies for firing American workers while heavily relying on immigrant labor through the H-1B visa program. He spoke at a bipartisan event hosted by The Hill and Valley Forum on Wednesday. Vance questioned the ethics and economics of companies doing mass layoffs but at the same time increasing their applications for work visas, as per the report by Benzinga. And I sort of wonder; that doesn't totally make sense to me.' At first, Vance did not name Microsoft directly but agreed when the host mentioned it and said he had read about Microsoft's mass layoffs. Vance quoted the President, saying the best and brightest should come to America and build great companies, but he criticized companies that fire thousands of American workers and then claim they cannot find workers in the U.S, as stated in the report by Yahoo Finance. He called this claim 'a bullshit story' and said the math of firing 9,000 American workers while saying they cannot find workers here worries him. On the other hand, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella wrote a memo to employees on Thursday to address the recent job cuts. Live Events Nadella said, 'I want to speak to what's been weighing heavily on me, and what I know many of you are thinking about: the recent job eliminations. These decisions are among the most difficult we have to make', as per the report by Benzinga. Microsoft layoffs rise as AI hiring grows Microsoft's layoffs have been controversial. The second round of cuts in 2025 affected less than 4% of the workforce, about 9,000 employees. The company said these layoffs were part of cost control measures and affected various teams, locations, and lengths of service, as per Microsoft statement. ALSO READ: Microsoft axes 9,000 jobs — then tells staff to use AI to cope with the fallout So far in 2025, Microsoft has laid off over 15,000 people, according to CNBC. Despite laying off many workers, Microsoft is expanding its artificial intelligence (AI) team. The company has reportedly hired about two dozen employees from Alphabet Inc.'s DeepMind, Google's AI research unit, as stated in the report by CNBC. This hiring has raised questions about Microsoft's strategy during layoffs. In his memo, Nadella reflected on Microsoft's decade-long mission to empower every individual and organization worldwide to achieve more. He also discussed how the rise of AI is reshaping Microsoft's mission and future. Microsoft's stock price has risen 22.5% year-to-date and crossed the $500 mark on July 9, as per the report by Benzinga. FAQs Q1. Why did JD Vance criticize Microsoft? JD Vance slammed Microsoft for firing American workers while hiring foreign talent through H-1B visas. Q2. How many people did Microsoft lay off in 2025? Microsoft laid off over 15,000 workers in 2025 as part of cost-cutting measures.

'US citizenship test too easy': USCIS director says Trump administration will change this because...

USCIS director said US citizenship test is so easy that one can memorize the answers and pass. US Citizenship and Immigration Services director Joseph Edlow said the existing citizenship test to get US citizenship is too easy and apart from the sweeping immigration overhaul that is being planned by the Donald Trump administration, they want to change the test as well. In an interview with the NYT, Edlow said the test is such that one can memorize the answers easily and pass the test. According to the existing test pattern, immigrants study 100 civics questions and then respond correctly to six out of 10 questions to pass that portion of the test. In the first term of the administration, the USCIS increased the number of questions and required applicants to respond correctly to 12 out of 20 questions. Edlow said the agency plans to return to a version of what they had at that time. 'The test as it's laid out right now, it's not very difficult,' Edlow said. 'It's very easy to kind of memorize the answers. I don't think we're really comporting with the spirit of the law.' 'It should be a net positive' Edlow said granting citizenship should be a net positive. 'And if we're looking at the people that are coming over, that are especially coming over to advance certain economic agendas that we have and otherwise benefit the national interest — that's absolutely what we need to be taking care of.' 'I really do think that the way H-1B needs to be used, and this is one of my favorite phrases, is to, along with a lot of other parts of immigration, supplement, not supplant, US economy and US businesses and US workers,' Edlow said. Trump, Vance on immigration Both President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance sent a strong message to the tech companies, asking them to hire Americans. At an AI summit, Trump said the globalist mindset of the tech industry leaves Americans out of jobs while these jobs to to China and India. "Many of our largest tech companies have reaped the blessings of American freedom while building their factories in China, hiring workers in India and stashing profits in Ireland, you know that. All the while dismissing and even censoring their fellow citizens right here at home. Under President Trump, those days are over," he said. "Winning the AI race will demand a new spirit of patriotism and national loyalty in Silicon Valley and long beyond Silicon Valley," Trump said. JD Vance was harsher as he said he does not believe the 'bulls**t' story that these companies can't find workers in America. "That displacement and that math worries me a bit. And what the president has said, he said very clearly: We want the very best and the brightest to make America their home. We want them to build great companies and so forth. But I don't want companies to fire 9,000 American workers and then to go and say, 'We can't find workers here in America. ' That's a bulls**t story," JD said.
