NIE, Amazon Web Services set up AI-focused innovation hub for edtech research

[SINGAPORE] The National Institute of Education (NIE) and Amazon Web Services (AWS) on Thursday (May 29) announced the launch of the Technology for Education Centre (TEC) – a new initiative aimed at driving applied innovation and research in the space of education technology.
A three-year memorandum of understanding was signed between the two organisations for this venture. The partnership is expected to facilitate research and experimentation with emerging technologies in education, including artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing.
NIE is an autonomous institute within Nanyang Technological University (NTU).
TEC will be located on NIE's campus, and is designed as a collaborative hub where student teachers, academics and education researchers can prototype and test new learning tools.
It will be housed in a new annex building at NIE, as part of an initiative to refresh the campus, and will be ready around the same time as the opening of Nanyang Crescent MRT station, which will serve the NTU Smart Campus.
The centre is fundamentally intended to provide an environment for both the development of edtech and its application in real-world settings.

The initiative supports Singapore's broader ambitions under the National AI Strategy 2.0 to develop an AI-ready workforce. It also aligns with the community pillar of AWS' ongoing AI Spring Singapore programme, which is designed to equip 5,000 individuals with AI skills from 2024 to 2026.
In May 2024, AWS announced that it would be investing S$12 billion in Singapore's cloud infrastructure by 2028, with its expected contribution to Singapore's gross domestic product at S$23.7 billion, while supporting more than 12,000 jobs annually.
One of TEC's early goals will be to advance cloud-based learning and upskilling for educators. Resources such as AWS Skill Builder and cloud simulations will be made available to help participants strengthen their digital competencies.
Additionally, the centre will support applied research projects that seek to integrate AI and analytics into teaching practices and policy development in Singapore.
NIE director Professor Liu Woon Chia said the partnership will help to 'shape the future through ethical and inclusive use of technology' at a media briefing.
'We must teach our teachers differently so they can ensure students learn differently, paving the way for an education that is future-ready.'
The venture also includes student-driven service-learning initiatives that leverage generative AI tools such as Amazon Bedrock and Amazon Q Developer to address community challenges.
TEC will serve as a training ground through workshops, hackathons and forums that explore ethical issues related to AI in education, such as data privacy and bias, in addition to prototyping and research.
When asked about the number of students that will benefit from this initiative, Prof Liu said every student teacher at NIE will have the opportunity to experience the process of learning and solutionising with AI at TEC.
'Not all students may be involved in the creation of prototypes, but we are confident that many will want to be involved.'
Elsie Tan, AWS' country manager, public sector (Singapore), said the partnership highlights the role of educators in preparing future-ready workers.
'We are helping to equip the education sector for the digital age by combining NIE's pedagogical leadership with AWS' cloud capabilities,' she said.
Position on industry partners
While AWS is the first industry partner, Prof Liu noted that it would not be the only one.
'Right now, AWS is a front runner in terms of technology expertise. At NIE, we know the pedagogy and our students, so this collaboration will allow us to accelerate a tech-enabled education we envision,' she said.
Prof Liu said 'an experimental space' setting is envisaged for the TEC, where students, faculty and AWS specialists can collaborate in an environment where solutions can be developed to meet the needs of students and society at large.
'We want some student teachers working on certain projects to be able to work with the people at TEC to build their prototypes and create solutions with the technology available,' she said.

It is becoming increasingly difficult to tell when AI has been used and when it hasn't. AI can be a powerful tool for teachers and students. It excels at information, logic and synthesis, but not at the deeply human elements of education. Rather than fighting against AI, let us evolve with it. Instead of banning or policing AI use, educators should focus on adapting our assessment methods to this new reality. For example, students could be presented with an AI-generated essay containing errors, and asked to identify and correct those flaws. Or, students could be given an AI-written piece and asked how they would improve it. There could also be more oral submissions where students must explain and defend their ideas, or demonstrate their creative thinking live. AI need not be the end of honest academic effort. Meta Platforms has acquired a nearly 3 per cent stake in eyewear maker EssilorLuxottica, a source told Reuters on Tuesday, amid growing consumer interest in AI-powered wearable devices. Sprucing up its wearable technology with artificial-intelligence capabilities could help Meta attract new users as it invests billions of dollars in bolstering its AI infrastructure. EssilorLuxottica declined to comment, while Meta did not immediately respond when contacted by Reuters. Meta bought a stake worth around 3 billion euros ($3.52 billion) in EssilorLuxottica at the current market price and is considering further investments that could build its share to around 5 per cent over time, according to Bloomberg News, which reported the development earlier in the day. The social media giant teamed up with Oakley to release AI-powered smart glasses last month, expanding its push into wearable tech after the success of Ray-Ban Meta glasses, millions of which have been sold since their launch in 2023. The "Oakley Meta HSTN" will feature a hands-free high-resolution camera, open-ear speakers, water resistance and Meta AI capabilities. EssilorLuxottica planned to boost its production capacity for smart glasses and hopes to expand its collaboration with Meta to other brands, Chief Executive Francesco Milleri had said in February. PARIS: The potential of artificial intelligence is immense - but its equally vast energy consumption needs curbing, with asking shorter questions one way to achieve, said a UNESCO study unveiled on Tuesday (Jul 8). A combination of shorter queries and using more specific models and could cut AI energy consumption by up to 90 pe rcent without sacrificing performance, said UNESCO in a report published to mark the AI for Good global summit in Geneva. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently revealed that each request sent to its popular generative AI app ChatGPT consumes on average 0.34 Wh of electricity, which is between 10 and 70 times a Google search. With ChatGPT receiving around a billion requests per day that amounts to 310 GWh annually, equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of three million people in Ethiopia, for example, Moreover, UNESCO calculated that AI energy demand is doubling every 100 days as generative AI tools become embedded in everyday life. "The exponential growth in computational power needed to run these models is placing increasing strain on global energy systems, water resources, and critical minerals, raising concerns about environmental sustainability, equitable access, and competition over limited resources," the UNESCO report warned. However, it was able to achieve a nearly 90 per cent reduction in electricity usage by reducing the length of its query, or prompt, as well as by using a smaller AI, without a drop in performance. Many AI models like ChatGPT are general-purpose models designed to respond on a wide variety of topics, meaning that it must sift through an immense volume of information to formulate and evaluate responses. The use of smaller, specialised AI models offers major reductions in electricity needed to produce a response. So did cutting the cutting prompts from 300 to 150 words. Being already aware of the energy issue, tech giants all now offer miniature versions with fewer parameters of their respective large language models. For example, Google sells Gemma, Microsoft has Phi-3, and OpenAI has GPT-4o mini. French AI companies have done likewise, for instance, Mistral AI has introduced its model Ministral.
