Fate of huge Channel 5 series dubbed ‘the new Vera' revealed after ratings success

THE fate of one of Channel 5's most popular TV dramas has been revealed after being dubbed 'the new Vera'.
The Sun can exclusively reveal that TV execs have handed police drama Ellis a second series.

The programme, starring Sharon D Clarke, has been greenlit with show bosses hoping to replicate the success of its first series with another edition after managing to attain 2.4 million viewers for it's first episode.
Ellis was lauded as the next Vera when the show premiered shortly after Brenda Blethyn quit her long-running ITV role for good.
A source told The Sun: "Ellis became a huge success for Channel 5 and everyone was over-the-moon with how well it did.
"It is no surprise that bosses have rushed to recommission a brand new series and they hope it have it on the air as soon as possible."
The Sun can reveal that filming will begin this month and the brand new series is expected to premiere in 2026.
Leading actress Sharon D. Clarke will be back in the title role of DCI Ellis in the show which was commended for being the first black solo female-led detective series in the UK.
Her right-hand man, DS Harper, played by Andrew Gower, will also be back for the second outing - set to consist of three 2-hour long episodes.
Speaking about the return of the show following its critical acclaim, Sharon said: "I am thrilled to return as DCI Ellis.
"The response to the first series was overwhelming, and I am excited to continue this journey with such a talented team, especially with the wonderful Andrew Gower by my side.
"Ellis is a character who resonates deeply, and I can't wait for audiences to see what we have in store for her and Harper in series two."

Paul Testar, the Commissioning Editor of scripted programming at Channel 5 added: 'Following the huge success of the first series of Ellis, we are thrilled for it to return with the brilliant Sharon D Clarke and Andrew Gower reprising their roles.
"We can't wait to bring the detective duo back to the 5 audience next year'.
It'll come as great news for fans who were left begging for a second series almost immediately after the show premiered.
Reaction to the show was universally positive, with one fan saying: "I think she could be up there with #Vera after a few more series."
Before someone else shared: "I'm really liking #Ellis on @channel5_tv great drama gotta love a powerful woman [who] puts everyone in their place."

The source went on to explain that having Ellie on the show is something that the BBC is "incredibly proud of", as they love to break stigmas. "Ellie is a fantastic signing and they think she could go all the way," the insider added. She joins the likes of EastEnders ' Balvinder Sopal, Dani Dyer, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Chris Robshaw for the upcoming series. Although CBeebies presenter George Webster appeared in the Christmas special back in 2022, Ellie is the first participant with Downs syndrome to appear on the main show. Meanwhile, the show has confirmed that there will be two new faces in the professional dancing line-up for this year. Joining the glitzy ballroom this autumn are Alexis Warr from the U.S. and Australia 's Julian Caillon, both set to make their debut on the hit BBC One series. Warr made history in 2022 as the first female ballroom and Latin dancer to win So You Think You Can Dance, earning the title of America's favourite dancer. On joining Strictly Come Dancing, Warr said: "I've admired Strictly for years, so joining this incredible family is such an honour. Caillon, who specialises in ballroom and Latin American, has appeared as a professional dancer for three seasons of Australia's version of Strictly Come Dancing, titled Australia's Dancing With The Stars. He said: "Joining the cast of Strictly really is a dream come true. I've watched it for years, especially cheering on all the amazing dancers I know and work with who've been part of it," adding: "I can't wait to get stuck in, have some fun, and be part of something special!"

Mathew Horne fights back tears over sudden death of Gavin and Stacey colleague
Mathew Horne fought back tears while telling crowds he'd just been told a crew member from Gavin and Stacey had died. The actor, 46, starred as Gavin Shipman in the BBC comedy alongside Joanna Page, James Corden, and Ruth Jones since it began in 2007 until its final episode on Christmas Day 2024. He was being interviewed on stage for an In Conversation With session in Taunton, Somerset, when he suddenly became emotional and told the audience he'd only just received the news when it had been shared on the cast WhatsApp group. Earlier on… we had a driver on the finale called Rob and he was in his early 40s… and I found out via the Whatsapp group earlier that he has passed away and I got slightly distracted there. Horne also shared how close the cast had become since bonding 'like a family' over the last 18 years. He explained: 'In 2019, before the Christmas special – part one of the finale if you like – aired, I lost my mother and Alison really stepped up and she became my surrogate mother off screen as well. 'Whenever she texts me even now she signs it 'Mum'. And that is cool. That is so beautiful. And she says, 'How are you, my little prince?' It means the world to me.' Gavin and Stacey ended on Christmas Day, 2024, with a feature-length episode that attracted a staggering 19.1million viewers. Fans waited five years to find out if Smithy accepted Nessa's proposal to quickly discover he was getting married – but not to her. Instead, the episode followed Smithy gearing up to marry Sonia – his insufferable girlfriend who his friends and family couldn't stand.
