Russia is open to peace with Ukraine, but achieving "our goals" remains a priority, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Sunday, days after U.S. President Donald Trump gave Moscow a 50-day deadline to agree to a ceasefire or face tougher sanctions.Peskov and other Russian officials have repeatedly rejected accusations from Kyiv and its Western partners of stalling peace talks. It also wants Ukraine to renounce its bid to join NATO and accept strict limits on its armed forces, demands Kyiv and its Western allies have rejected.President Donald Trump threatened Russia on July 14 with steep tariffs and announced a rejuvenated pipeline for American weapons to reach Ukraine, hardening his stance toward Moscow after months of frustration following unsuccessful negotiations aimed at ending the war. The direct Russia-Ukraine negotiations in Istanbul resulted in several rounds of prisoner exchanges, but little else.Trump said he would implement "severe tariffs" unless a peace deal is reached within 50 days. He provided few details on how they would be implemented, but suggested they would target Russia's trading partners in an effort to isolate Moscow in the global economy.In addition, Trump said European allies would buy "billions and billions" of dollars of U.S. military equipment to be transferred to Ukraine, replenishing the besieged country's supplies of weapons. Included in the plan are Patriot air defense systems, a top priority for Ukraine as it fends off Russian drones and missiles.Doubts were recently raised about Trump's commitment to supply Ukraine when the Pentagon paused shipments over concerns that U.S. stockpiles were running low.

Russian rouble weakens against US dollar after fresh EU sanctions
The Russian rouble weakened against the U.S. dollar and China's yuan on Friday after the European Union agreed on its 18th package of sanctions against Russia over its war in Ukraine, which included measures against the Russian energy industry. As of 1245 GMT, the rouble was 0.8% lower at 78.70 per U.S. dollar, according to data compiled by LSEG, based on over-the-counter quotes. The rouble is up about 45% against the dollar since the start of the year. The rouble, insulated from global financial flows by Russian currency controls and Western sanctions, remained strong despite a change in the attitude of U.S. President Donald Trump toward Russia in recent weeks. Analysts said the new EU sanctions will have little impact. The rouble is receiving support from more foreign currency sales by the central bank. "Sanctions will increase pressure on the Russian economy, but their effect may be limited. Russia will continue to reorient its exports towards Asia," Russian Agricultural Bank analysts said in a research note. 'Those trying to defame kanwar yatra will face action': Yogi Adityanath
UP CM Yogi Adityanath MEERUT: Miscreants posing as kanwariyas to incite violence and defame the pilgrimage will face strict action, including public naming through posters once the yatra concludes, UP CM Yogi Adityanath said on Sunday. He inspected arrangements and interacted with pilgrims along NH-58. He said miscreants were deliberately infiltrating groups of kanwariyas and indulging in hooliganism to tarnish the image of the yatra. 'Troublemakers have resorted to defame this holy pilgrimage. We have CCTV footage of such elements. We will paste their posters after the yatra is over. Any attempt to disrupt the yatra or compromise its sanctity will be dealt with strictly,' he said. Demonstrating respect for the pilgrims' faith, Yogi showered flower petals on kanwariyas in Meerut and from a helicopter in other districts of western UP. 'From tomorrow, lakhs of Shiv devotees from various states will carry water in the form of kanwar and perform jalabhishek in various Shiv temples. I heartily welcome all the devotees bringing holy Gangajal from Haridwar,' he said. 'While most devotees uphold the sanctity of the yatra, some anti-social elements are conspiring to malign it. It is the responsibility of every kanwar sangh and every Shiv bhakt to expose such elements. Do not allow them to enter your circle. Immediately inform the administration if you spot such people.' Yogi urged pilgrims not to retaliate if provoked and assured that the administration was fully prepared to take legal action. 'No one should take the law into their own hands. The administration is there to act if any such miscreant desecrates the yatra,' he said. He said that unlike previous govts that 'created obstacles for such pilgrimages before 2017', the current govt respected the faith of devotees. 'It is our responsibility to take this tradition forward with the same sacred sentiment,' he said. The CM appealed to pilgrims to avoid littering, join cleanliness campaigns and ensure that no river or road was left dirty. 'Shiv bhakts should walk with a spirit of public welfare and remain mindful of not causing inconvenience to others. ' The state, he added, had arranged for drinking water, first-aid stations, lighting, rest camps and other facilities.
