Yahoo24-04-2025
As April comes to a close, Mother's Day is getting closer, this year falling on Sunday, May 11.
While many celebrate Mother's Day with sentimental gifts, others may be looking for an activity to celebrate the women in their lives. Luckily, Connecticut has plenty of fun outings that mom, aunt or grandma would enjoy. Whether the mother figures in your life like live music, a nice meal, outdoor activities or simple relaxation, the state is sure to have the perfect Mother's Day activity for all.
Here are eight things to do for Mother's Day in Connecticut.
If mom is a fan of flowers, take her to Wicked Tulips, a flower farm with the biggest you-pick-tulip event in New England, complete with over 1.5 million blooming tulips of various colors and 75 varieties.
Tickets for Wicked Tulips must be pre-purchased online for a specific date and time. Admission, which includes 10 tulips, costs $5 for kids or $20-25 for adults, depending on the day. Additional tulips can be purchased for $1.25 per stem. Wicked Tulips is open from April 24 through May 9 in Preston, with hours from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m.-7 p.m.
Pamper mom with an elegant afternoon tea service aboard the Essex Steam Train. The train's "Mommy & Me Tea" event takes guests on a scenic 90-minute train ride through the Connecticut River Valley in a restored 1920s era Pullman Dining car. Dress in your Sunday best, listen to comforting classical music and take in the scenery while enjoying an assortment of teas, finger sandwiches and pastries.
Mommy & Me Tea is offered at noon on both May 10 and May 11, with tickets starting at $54.99.
Holiday history: Mother's Day is coming up. Here's when the holiday is in 2025
If mom likes the performing arts, consider spending Mother's Day at Middletown's Wadsworth Mansion. Ballet Hartford will be putting on a special Mother's Day performance of "Sleeping Beauty," followed by a luncheon with tea sandwiches and sweet treats.
Performances will be held at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Sunday, May 11, and tickets cost $70 per person.
While Mother's Day brunch is offered at tons of restaurants in Connecticut, one venue in Portland is hosting a special lavish brunch that will make mom feel like a queen. At Saint Clements Castle and Marina, mom can enjoy brunch in a literal castle from the 1800s, complete with lush surrounding grounds and breathtaking waterfront views of the Connecticut River.
The castle's Mother's Day brunch includes a gourmet buffet of decadent desserts and chef-inspired dishes, including a personalized omelet station, sliced prime rib and a wall full of donuts. Tickets to the brunch cost $70 for adults or $30 for children ages 4-12. Reservations can be made online for 10 a.m., 10:30 a.m., noon or 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 11.
For moms who would love a day on the water, the Connecticut River Museum hosts special Mother's Day cruises on two of their boats: RiverQuest, a tour boat that explores the river's ecology and wildlife, and Onrust, a re-creation of a 1614 sailboat.
On May 11, RiverQuest will offer hour-long cruises at 10 a.m. and noon, and Onrust will offer a 90-minute cruise at 2 p.m. Tickets are $10 for mom and children or $20 for other adults.

Does mom love a good glass of wine? Treat her to a fancy day of wine tasting. This year, Aquila's Nest Vineyards in Newtown is hosting a gourmet chocolate and wine pairing at noon on Saturday, May 10.
Held in the vineyard's grand piano wine tasting room, this two-hour Mother's Day event will include a sample of four nuanced wines and award-winning smooth chocolates. Tickets, which must be reserved online, cost $37 per person.
If you and mom are the active type, consider running a race together on Mother's Day. This year, the annual Bridgeport Hospital Mother's Day 5K will start at 7:45 a.m. on Sunday, May 11, starting and ending at the hospital's Milford Campus.
The event not only consists of a 5K, but fitness options for the whole family: a timed 5K run and walk, a 3K walk and a kid's fun run for ages nine and under. Registration for the races costs $35 for adults or $15 for students ages 10-18, while the kid's fun run is free to enter. Prizes will be distributed to the top runners, as well as the fastest mother-daughter and mother-son teams.

Big Boy makes a pit stop in Denver, Union Pacific's locomotive will be available for viewing in Greeley this weekend

The world's largest operating steam train is in Denver. Union Pacific's legendary Big Boy No. 4014 locomotive made a pit stop in the Mile High City on Friday. It first rode the rails in the 1940s until its retirement in 1961. It came to Denver from Cheyenne, Wyoming, and makes the return trip on Saturday. There is no public viewing in Denver, but the train will stop at the Colorado Model Railroad Museum in Greeley in the morning. Big Boy will be outside the museum at the 10th Street crossing for about 20 minutes, sometime between 8:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. The museum normally opens at 10 a.m. on Saturday but will be open early for the event. Anyone going to see the train in Greeley will need to stay back 25 feet or more from the tracks for safety reasons.

Actress Kate Beckinsale announces mother's death: ‘I don't want to post this'

On Thursday, July 17, actress Kate Beckinsale took to Instagram to make a heartbreaking announcement. In the post featuring several pictures of herself and her beloved mom, Judy Loe, Beckinsale announced Loe's death. 'I don't want to post this,' Beckinsale, who is best known for her roles in 'Underworld,' 'Click,' and 'Serendipity,' began the caption of her post. 'I am only posting this because I have had to register my mother's death certificate and it will soon become public record.' Beckinsale revealed that her mom 'died the night of July 15th in my arms after immeasurable suffering.' Loe was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in July 2024. (Warning: The below links contain language some readers may find offensive.) Over the last year, Beckinsale has continued sharing moments with her mom on social media — from playing practical jokes on Loe to celebrating her 78th birthday in the hospital singing a song during treatments. On Mother's Day, Beckinsale told her mom that 'any journey you are on, I am on it with you, as you have always been with me.' 'I have not picked all the best photos, nor the best videos, because I cannot bear to go through my camera roll yet,' Beckinsale continued on Instagram. 'I deeply apologise to any of her friends who are finding out this way or through the press, but I cannot go through her phone. I am paralyzed.' Beckinsale said her mom 'was the compass of my life, the love of my life, my dearest friend. The vastness and huge heart of this tiny woman has touched so many people who love her dearly.' 'She has been brave in so many ways, forgiving sometimes too much, believing in the ultimate good in people and the world is so dim without her that it is nearly impossible to bear,' Beckinsale wrote. 'Mama, I love you so much. This has been my greatest fear since finding my father dead at five and I am here,' she concluded her statement. 'Oh my Mama. I'm sorry, I'm so sorry. I am so sorry.' On July 9, just a week before Loe's passing, Beckinsale shared an emotional video of herself in the hospital, caring for her mom . In the video, Beckinsale was seen singing to her mom. 'When my mum was 14, she was in a harmony group with her best friends Mary, Sylvia, (known as Fuzzy to this day because of an unfortunate perm decades ago) and Chris,' Beckinsale shared. 'Mary unfortunately is no longer with us but up until very recently even though they are in their now late 70s they would get together and still absolutely kill it.' 'I am a very poor substitute not being a very good singer but I want my mum's dearest and oldest friends in her hospital room with her, so Fuz and Chris, please know I'm trying to keep the Four Teens going as best as I can from a distance.'

Jason Aldean's wife provides update on son Memphis after ‘long night in the ER'

Jason Aldean's son has a good sense of humor — even in an emergency room. The 48-year-old country music star shares two children — son Memphis, 7, and daughter Navy, 6, with his wife Brittany Aldean, whom he has been married to since March 2015, according to People. On July 16, Brittany Aldean shared an update on Memphis following his recent visit to the ER. 'Memphis is doing great. Thanks to all those checking in' she wrote in an Instagram Story over a photo of Memphis wearing a sling around his left arm. The update comes one day after Brittany Aldean revealed that Memphis broke his collarbone. 'It was a long night in the ER, but Memphis is ok. He fractured his collarbone and will be in a sling for a couple of weeks,' she wrote in an Instagram Story on July 15, per Taste of Country. 'Just rest and extra lovin', he'll be healed before we know it,' she added. Brittany Aldean later shared a video of her and her husband comforting their son as he was lying down in a hospital bed. 'How [are] you feeling, buddy? Do you feel better? I hope it's not broken, but I think maybe you're probably gonna have to get a little sling,' Jason Aldean said to his son, according to Parade. He then jokes that his son should tell his friends that he was wrestling alligators when the injury happened. According to Taste of Country, Memphis joked back and started to wonder how many alligators he could take on if he was healthy. Jason Aldean also playfully suggested his son tell his friends that he was getting jumped before beating everyone up. 'I'm not going to tell them that. They're definitely not going to believe me,' he replied, per Parade. Jason Aldean sparked controversy in 2012 when he was spotted 'getting cozy' with his future wife at a bar while he was still married to his then-wife Jessica Ussery, according to Us Weekly. The former couple divorced in 2013 and Jason Aldean's relationship with Brittany Aldean was confirmed by Us Weekly the following year. Jason and Brittany Aldean tied the knot in 2015 and welcomed Memphis in December 2017 — followed by Navy in 2019. On Dec. 1, Jason Aldean took to Instagram to celebrate his son's seventh birthday. '7 years with this little guy has been a blessing. Happy birthday lil man. Hope you have the best day ever! I love you so much buddy,' he wrote in the caption alongside old and current photos of Memphis. The following month, Jason Aldean took his son for a 'boys day' trip. 'Memphis crushed his first offshore trip! Had a blast with the boys on 'the bounty.' Thanks for making it a really cool day for him,' he wrote alongside a video of the father-son duo's fishing adventure. On May 11, Brittany Aldean posted photos of her family of four in honor of Mother's Day. 'It's the most challenging yet rewarding job in the world,' she wrote of motherhood in the caption. 'I hope everyone feels appreciated today and always.' As for Jason Aldean — he left a heartfelt message in the comment section. 'Happy Mother's Day babe. You are an AMAZING mama and we all love you so much,' he wrote.
