Dan Sheehan will captain the British and Irish Lions when they take on the Western Force in their tour opener. And his girlfriend, Katherine Egan, who's a promising athlete in her own right, will be cheering him on in Perth on Saturday.
Lions skipper Maro Itoje will not be participating in Saturday's match as Sheehan, who captained Ireland for the first time against Wales in this year's Six Nations, will lead the team at Optus Stadium. The Leinster hooker is among five starters making their Lions debuts, with Ireland colleagues Garry Ringrose, James Lowe, Joe McCarthy and Josh van der Flier also on that list.
Sione Tuipulotu and Tadhg Beirne are the only two survivors from the XV that lost to Argentina in Dublin last Friday. However, they have been reassigned to inside centre and blindside flanker, respectively.
"Dan Sheehan gets the opportunity to lead the side against Western Force, which is a great honour for him and his family – so congratulations to Dan as he captains the side on his Lions debut," said Itoje, per the Irish Mirror. "We know the quality and experience the Force have and the opportunity to play against the Lions always brings out special performances from the Super Rugby sides, so we expect them to be at their best."
Athlete girlfriend
Off the field, Sheehan has been in a long-term relationship with fellow sportsperson Katherine. Egan is currently studying medicine at University College Dublin and also plays for the school's ladies' hockey team.

While the pair have kept their romance low-key, they occasionally share snapshots of their life together on social media. Katherine first appeared on Dan's Instagram feed back in October 2017, when they attended his school's debutante ball.
Over the years, they've travelled to beautiful destinations such as Bali, Indonesia and Santorini together. Katherine is often seen supporting Dan from the stands and is sure to pop up in Australia over the coming weeks.
Family's rugby past
Born in September 1998, Sheehan is now 26 and hails from a family of four siblings. He has one brother, Bobby, and two sisters, Emma and Susie, along with parents Sinead and Barry, who are often seen cheering him on from the stands at home and abroad.
Originally from Dublin, Sheehan spent three years living in Romania due to his father's job relocation to Bucharest. Both he and brother Bobby attended the American International School where, despite rugby not being available, Dan kept active with football, softball and swimming.

Upon returning to Ireland, the brothers enrolled at Clongowes Wood College while their parents were working in Poland. Sheehan continued his education at Trinity College Dublin, where he pursued his passion for rugby.
And it turns out rugby is something of a family affair. His dad, Barry, represented UCD during the 1980s and 1990s, and his grandfather Denis once played for Leinster.
Rugby Career
Sheehan signed his first professional contract with Leinster in June 2020 and made his debut in October that same year. He recently extended his contract with Leinster and the IRFU for another two years, which will keep him in the capital until at least 2027.
His first appearance for Ireland was in a Six Nations match against Italy in February 2022. In the final match of that tournament, he scored a try and was named Player of the Match in Ireland's 26-5 victory over Scotland, securing Ireland's 12th Triple Crown.

During a showdown with England in March 2023, Sheehan's two tries secured the 2023 Six Nations title and Ireland's fourth Grand Slam. The following year, he suffered a serious ACL injury that sidelined him for six months before a triumphant return to the field in January 2025.

Emma Raducanu plays down expectations ahead of ‘dangerous' Wimbledon opener
Emma Raducanu played down expectations for another deep Wimbledon run ahead of a 'very dangerous' first-round match on Monday. The 22-year-old made the fourth round here last year in her biggest moment since winning the US Open in 2021 but has been dealing with some difficult personal news and a niggling back problem. And Raducanu – who insisted she is 'just good friends' with US Open doubles partner Carlos Alcaraz – will find herself in the position of senior player to be shot at on Court One on Monday when she takes on 17-year-old British debutante Mimi Xu. 'I think it's a very dangerous match, very difficult,' said Raducanu. 'I think Mimi is a really, really good player. I practised with her a few times. A lot of weapons. Also moves really well. 'For her it's one where there's nothing to lose. I remember when I had my first Wimbledon here and I was 18. It's a great feeling. You just feel completely fearless. 'So I think for me it's going to be a challenge, but one that I'm looking forward to and I'm ready for.' Xu is the oldest of three exciting teenagers representing Britain in the women's draw along with 16-year-olds Hannah Klugman and Mika Stojsavljevic. Raducanu burst onto the global stage here four years ago with a run to the last 16, and she said: 'It does feel like a long time ago. A lot has happened in the last four years. 'It's good to see a new generation. It keeps us on our toes. It keeps us hungry to improve. It's just healthy competition between all of us. I know I'm going to have to bring a really good level of tennis on Monday if I want to get through it.' Xu, from Swansea, is also of Chinese heritage, and Raducanu added: 'Mimi's mum has always been really nice to me. I speak to her in Chinese. It's good practice for me. I get to try and improve my Mandarin, which is good. 'I hit with her a few times at the NTC (National Tennis Centre), especially at the end of last year during the pre-season. Really good hits, really difficult. She's also a really nice girl. I got to know her at (Billie Jean King) Cup last year. It will be interesting to play her on Monday.' Raducanu admitted her back still is not 100 per cent, with a mixed grass-court season seeing her reach the quarter-finals at Queen's Club to reclaim the British number one ranking from Katie Boulter before pulling out of Berlin and losing early in Eastbourne. 'Truthfully I don't expect much from myself this year (at Wimbledon),' she said. 'I know I've just been dealing with certain things. I just want to go out there and embrace the moment. I want to embrace the occasion. 'I know there's not many opportunities to be playing at Wimbledon. You get it once a year and for a finite amount of time. I'm just looking forward to going out there and feeling the surroundings and the atmosphere. 'Right now I'm just happy to be at Wimbledon. I think that is a great motivation to just keep going and deal with everything else afterwards.' Also facing the forecast hot temperatures on Monday will be Boulter, who takes on ninth seed Paula Badosa on Centre Court. It is a very tough draw for the 28-year-old, who chose to skip Eastbourne to prioritise trying to have a good run at Wimbledon. Boulter said: 'I do feel like I can play very well on these courts and I don't think that a seed is going to want to see me in their part of the draw either for a first round. 'I'm very, very excited. I feel like it's a totally different situation for me coming in this year. I'm not seeded. I'm kind of like a dark horse and I like that feeling. I do like the fact that I can go out and swing free and I've got nothing to lose.'

Emma Raducanu giggles as she addresses Carlos Alcaraz relationship ahead of Wimbledon
The pair have been the talk of the internet since their US Open announcement earlier this month COURT IN A STORM Emma Raducanu giggles as she addresses Carlos Alcaraz relationship ahead of Wimbledon Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) EMMA RADUCANU has put any rumours of a relationship with Carlos Alcaraz to bed. Raducanu and Alcaraz, both 22, have been subject to swirling rumours about a potential romance after they announced they would be teaming up as doubles partners for the US Open later this summer. Rumours on social media have suggested that the duo's relationship goes further than the court this week, but Raducanu has been quick to shut down the chatter. When asked about it in her pre-Wimbledon press conference, the British star said while giggling: "We're just good friends". Raducanu is jumping at the idea of teaming up with the World No2, who is hot off the heels of winning the French Open earlier this month. "But for me, when he asked me, I was going to say yes, I just had to kind of go through the formality of asking my coach, so I didn't just make the decision." On how they became friends, Raducanu added: "I've known him for years. "And actually in Wimbledon 2021 it was like kind of the first time I started getting to know him, and I had a good run there and then also again in the US Open in 2021. 3 Rumours have begun to swirl about the dynamic between Alcaraz and Raducanu Credit: Getty "And I remember he was always playing the day before me and I was playing like the second day of the round. "And I would see him win and then I would have motivation to win and get myself into that position too." Further lifting the lid on her connection with Alcaraz, Raducanu went on: "We have a good relationship still. He's obviously overtaken me a lot, but it's nice that we have that from a while ago. "I think for all of us, we really kind of value those connections that we had from when we were young because when you become a bit more known or a bit more successful, you just find yourself reverting back to people you knew from a young age because you're like, that's a real genuine connection. "Because it becomes very busy and you have a lot more friends but the ones that you've known for a long time mean a lot more to you." Both Raducanu and Alcaraz will have their full focus on Wimbledon for now, with first-round action getting underway at the All England Club on Monday. Raducanu will open her account with a clash against fellow Brit, Mingge Xu. While Alcaraz will launch his defence of his 2024 title against Italian Fabio Fognini.
