Naylor homers as the Diamondbacks beat the Padres 6-3 on Machado's big night
Machado hit a hard shot off the glove of diving shortstop Geraldo Perdomo leading off the fourth inning and received a standing ovation. Machado, whose milestone hit came off starter Zac Gallen, became the fifth active player and 297th overall to reach 2,000 hits.
Machado's third hit of the night was a homer off Kyle Backhus leading off the eighth, his 15th of the season and 357th of his career. The All-Star slugger also had a single in the first.
Machado grounded into a game-ending double play against Kevin Ginkel, who earned his second save.
Yu Darvish (0-1) made his season debut for the Padres after being sidelined with right elbow inflammation since spring training. He allowed two runs and three hits in 3 2/3 innings, struck out five and walked two. He got a nice ovation when he was lifted.
Naylor homered to center field off Yuki Matsui with one out in the fifth and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. aboard on a single. It was his 11th. Naylor made his big league debut with the Padres in 2019 and was traded to Cleveland on Aug. 31, 2020, in the nine-player deal that brought Mike Clevinger to San Diego.
Gallen (7-9) pitched six strong innings, holding the Padres to one unearned run and five hits while striking out nine and walking one. He improved to 4-0 in his last five starts against San Diego.
Naylor walked leading off the second and scored on All-Star Eugenio Suárez's double that rattled around in the left-field corner. Gurriel's single in the third brought in Corbin Carroll, who hit a leadoff double and advanced on Perdomo's sacrifice bunt. Carroll hit an RBI triple in the eighth and scored on Perdomo's single.

SAN DIEGO — Juan Morillo wasn't supposed to be on the mound in the bottom of the eighth inning trying to hold a lead on Monday, July 7, against a National League wild card contender. He'd only just arrived at Petco Park from Triple-A Reno two innings prior, and entered with a runner on base and one out in a three-run game. The Diamondbacks right-hander walked the first two Padres batters he faced, but somehow got a pop out and strikeout, walking off the mound in celebration of keeping the Padres from getting closer. All after throwing 17 balls and five strikes. Advertisement Then Alek Thomas made a big-time catch on the warning track in right-center field to take away an extra-base hit from Jackson Merrill in the bottom of the ninth, and the Diamondbacks — coming off a 3-7 homestand, playing without one of their All-Stars and losing their closer to a right forearm strain less than an hour before first pitch — gutted out a 6-3 win. "Part of the game, too. I don't have excuses for anything. But thanks to God, I was able to escape from that situation," Morillo said in Spanish after the game. "I've felt a lot of pressure before. I was trying to do my job and get out of the inning and help my teammates get a win." The replacement on the active roster for closer Shelby Miller, who was placed on the 15-day injured list with a right forearm strain about an hour before first pitch, Morillo got the two outs he was asked to get and set up Kevin Ginkel, a perhaps unlikely closer, to pick up his second save of the season. Advertisement The Diamondbacks also played without All-Star second baseman Ketel Marte, who was scratched from the lineup with right groin tightness. But Marte could be back in action as soon as Tuesday, July 8. "They didn't let that news affect them on Shelby. The Marte scratch happened very late, it's easy to get distracted," manager Torey Lovullo said. "It was a situation where in my opinion, players are havig to grow up. I asked guys to do things out of the bullpen where they're going out there and maturing right before our very eyes, and that's what we need them to do." Miller felt something in his arm after he last pitched on July 5 at Chase Field. He joined the team on July 7 in San Diego and was at Petco Park for pregame work. Without him or Marte, the Diamondbacks (45-46) were at a big disadvantage against the Padres (48-42). But Zac Gallen (7-9) put together a second consecutive solid start with one unearned run allowed on five hits in six innings, striking out nine. Corbin Carroll broke out of a two-game hitting slump with a double and triple, Josh Naylor hit a two-run home run, and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. had three hits "This year's definitely been pretty frustrating for me, from a results standpoint," Gallen said. Shelby Miller to injured list, Ketel Marte day to day The injuries within the Diamondbacks continued to mount, and the bullpen suffered another one before the team's game against the Padres on Monday, July 7. Advertisement Miller was placed on the 15-day injured list with a right forearm strain in an announcement made less than an hour before first pitch, retroactive to July 6. Morillo, optioned to Triple-A Reno on July 1, was recalled to replace Miller on the active roster. Miller (3-3, 1.98 earned run average) has 10 saves in 15 chances, and most recently pitched on July 5 at Chase Field against the Kansas City Royals, throwing a scoreless inning. He's appeared in 37 games this season. Morillo returned after having spent more than two months in the major leagues with Arizona. He is 0-2 with a 3.91 ERA in 29 games after his clutch performance on Monday. The Diamondbacks bullpen lost reliever Ryan Thompson to a strained scapula on July 6 when he was placed on the 15-day injured list, and right-hander Kendall Graveman is still working his way back from a right hip impingement. Diamondbacks 3, Royals 9: Oh, There Were Fireworks
Game Summary Eduardo Rodriguez came in to this game riding a bit of a hot streak, but three batters in to the game, it was obvious that hot streak was over. Throughout E-Rod's less than 5 innings of pitching tonight, he seemed to alternate between pitches nowhere near the zone and meatballs right down Broadway. The results of such a performance were predictable. 9 runs, 8 earned, and 3 home runs allowed. All of this came with the Royals riding a significant offensive skid, coming into Phoenix with a week long homer-less streak. Well, as was pointed out in the GDT, if your offense is having a rough go of it, Chase is a great place to 'get right.' Advertisement The bullpen once again did an excellent job in a low leverage situation (for the year, D-Backs pitchers have a 3.07 ERA in low leverage vs a 4.73 ERA overall), not allowing a single run and never facing more than a single runner above the minimum in any inning. The offense, also did their best to keep this a low leverage affair. After getting 2 runs back in the first, the offense was silent, squandering an opportunity or two but mostly not able to string multiple hits together and build an inning. The Diamondbacks will have a short turnaround with the early game tomorrow, so thankfully we won't have to dwell on this one very long. The game result not being what we'd wanted, I still hope everyone enjoyed the fireworks and barbecue! Loss Probability and Box Score Courtesy FanGraphs Outside the Box Score Eduardo Rodriguez gave up a home run three batters in to the ball game. Who was to blame? The broadcasters, of course. Bert had just finished saying how the Royals had the least amount of homers in the league to date and hadn't hit a home run in a week. The broadcaster jinx lives and I'll never be convinced otherwise. Ketel Marte got a leadoff single to start the offense for the Diamondbacks in the first, but it was about as well placed (read: lucky) as a ball could be. He popped up the first pitch about halfway down the right field line. It had an expected BA of .030 according to Baseball Savant, but it landed equally about a foot between the first baseman, right fielder and foul line. The Diamondbacks played some small ball to cash in their first 2 runs of the game. After Ketel reached on a pop up, Domo walked and both runners were moved up 90 feet on a swinging bunt by Lourdes Gurriel. Domo and Ketel came home on the combo of a sac fly by Geno and groundball single through the right side of the infield by Josh Naylor (on the first pitch, of course). In the second inning, the Royals loaded the bases in front of Bobby Witt on what should have been a sacrifice bunt. Blaze Alexander, starting at third for Geno tonight, fielded the ball cleanly but had to double pump on the throw when Ketel wasn't near first trying to cover from his usual spot at second. Blaze did deliver a clean throw, but Ketel clanked it and everyone was safe. The merry-go-round continued from there as the Royals plated 3 runs in the inning. The broadcaster jinx came back in a good way, though not as impactful as in the first inning, when Bert was recounting how Tim Tawa was grinding through an 0-for-24 stretch. Tawa promptly singled up the middle. Diamondbacks squandered a scoring opportunity in the third when they had runners at the corners with no outs and the heart of the order at the plate. Geno hit a fly ball to medium right field and Domo tagged and started home before slamming on the brakes. They throw ended up about a third of the way up the third baseline, so I'd like to think that Domo would've been able to score on that, but Geraldo decided to wait it out and while staying at third with still less than 2 outs. Unfortunately, Naylor hit into a double play and no runs scored in the inning. E-Rod nearly had Witt retired to lead off the fourth. Witt foul tipped a pitch into Herrera's mitt, but Jose couldn't hang on to it. Witt singled on the next pitch, then came home on a Sasquatch dinger. Tim Tawa made a stupendous play to end the fifth and retire Bobby Witt for the first time in his first 4 at bats of the evening. A sinking line drive to straightaway center very well could have dropped in for an RBI single, but Tawa made a headlong dive and gloved the ball just inches above the turf. Advertisement Player of the Game I'm deciding to leave this space for the player most responsible for the game's outcome. In a win, that will continue to be the best player. In a loss? Well, tonight that person was Eduardo Rodriguez. With a loss probability of over 50%, he was singlehandedly responsible for the loss and then some. Looking at the numbers, he was still getting Whiffs and hitters to chase at close to his season-long numbers, but the EV was much higher than is typical for him. Michael McDermott made an AI-assisted observation in the GDT that it appeared E-Rod's struggles tonight may be mechanically based. Maybe they were, and I hope if it was it is something minor and identifiable as the Snakes can't afford any of our remaining healthy pitchers to be pitching at less than their peak for an extended period. Comment of the Game More participation in the GDT than I expected, with all the extracurricular activities happening this evening. A total of 269 comments at time of publishing. Hugo Gonzalez, Amari Williams, and Max Shulga are all on the C's roster for the NBA 2K26 Summer League 2025, which was announced Tuesday. Boston drafted Gonzalez with the 28th overall pick out of Spain, where the 19-year-old just wrapped up his season for Real Madrid. The young forward will not head back overseas for the 2025-26 season and will have a chance to earn some playing time as a rookie in Boston. Williams was drafted 46th overall out of Kentucky, and could also earn some playing time as a rookie. The Celtics have lost both Kristaps Porzingis and Luke Kornet this offseason, and with Al Horford potentially departing as well, Boston is going to need depth in its frontcourt. Gonzalez, Williams, and Shulga -- a sharpshooting guard taken 57th overall out of VCU -- will play their first pro games in a Celtics uniform Friday night in Las Vegas. Norris also played in eight games for the Maine Celtics in the G League, where he averaged 14.5 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. The roster is made up of a number of undrafted free agents along with former NBA players looking for another shot in the league. Kenny Lofton Jr. is one of the more intriguing players, as he's fresh off winning MVP of the Chinese Basketball Association for the Shanghai Sharks. Lofton Jr. has spent time in the NBA with the Memphis Grizzlies, Philadelphia 76ers, and Utah Jazz, in addition to stints in the G League. Each team in the Summer League will play at least five games. Following the first four games, the top four teams (based on winning percentage and a number of tiebreakers) will advance to the playoffs, which will tip off with a semifinal doubleheader on Saturday, July 19. The two winning teams will then meet in the championship game on Monday, July 20 at 10 p.m. The 26 teams that do not qualify for the playoffs will play a consolation game on either July 20 or July 21.
