Three-time All-Star Whit Merrifield retires after 9 seasons
Whit Merrifield, a three-time MLB All-Star who last played for the Atlanta Braves in 2024, announced his retirement Tuesday after nine years in the big leagues.
In a statement released through his agency, Warner Sports Management, Merrifield cited his family -- namely a daughter born in March 2024 -- as a reason to step away.
'I was never talented enough to just show up and play,' Merrifield said. 'Baseball required my full focus and energy for me to compete at the level I wanted to, and I realize I can no longer give that effort.
'At this point in life, I'd much rather chase around a toddler than chase sliders.'
The 36-year-old infielder, a ninth-round selection of the Kansas City Royals in 2010, spent more than six seasons in the minor leagues before making his major league debut at age 27 in 2016. Merrifield ends his career with 1,249 hits -- including 94 home runs and 256 doubles -- and a .280 batting average in 1,147 games.
He led the American League in stolen bases three times, finishing his career with 218 swipes.
'Since I've now had some time away from the game, I've had a chance to reflect on my individual career for the first time in my life,' Merrifield said. 'I'm proud of myself. The toughness I developed and the things I was able to accomplish, nobody outside of my camp thought possible.'
Merrifield quickly established himself as a premier player for Kansas City after his call-up, earning MVP votes in 2018 after batting a career-best .304. He followed that up in 2019 with a .302 season that was highlighted by his first All-Star nod. He added another All-Star selection in 2021 and a third in 2023 as a member of the Toronto Blue Jays.
Merrifield signed with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2024 but was released after batting .199 in 53 games. He finished the year with the Braves, with whom he hit .248.
'I loved all the moments,' Merrifield said. 'All the highs and even all the lows. I'm grateful for the way this game molded me. I can't wait to tell my story to my daughter one day.'

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Josh Naylor hit a two-run homer against his original team and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat San Diego 6-3 on Monday night after Padres slugger Manny Machado got his 2,000th career hit. Machado hit a hard shot off the glove of diving shortstop Geraldo Perdomo leading off the fourth inning and received a standing ovation. Machado, whose milestone hit came off starter Zac Gallen, became the fifth active player and 297th overall to reach 2,000 hits. Machado's third hit of the night was a homer off Kyle Backhus leading off the eighth, his 15th of the season and 357th of his career. The All-Star slugger also had a single in the first. Machado grounded into a game-ending double play against Kevin Ginkel, who earned his second save. Yu Darvish (0-1) made his season debut for the Padres after being sidelined with right elbow inflammation since spring training. He allowed two runs and three hits in 3 2/3 innings, struck out five and walked two. He got a nice ovation when he was lifted. Gallen (7-9) pitched six strong innings, holding the Padres to one unearned run and five hits while striking out nine and walking one. He improved to 4-0 in his last five starts against San Diego. Naylor walked leading off the second and scored on All-Star Eugenio Suárez's double that rattled around in the left-field corner. Gurriel's single in the third brought in Corbin Carroll, who hit a leadoff double and advanced on Perdomo's sacrifice bunt. Carroll hit an RBI triple in the eighth and scored on Perdomo's single. After producing sacrifice bunts in his first two plate appearances, Rocchio broke a 4-all tie by drilling an 0-2 slider from Astros reliever Steven Okert over the outstretched glove of Houston third baseman Isaac Paredes. Angel Martinez and Bo Naylor scored to provide the Guardians a 6-4 advantage. The Astros, who rallied from a four-run deficit with homers by Taylor Trammell and Paredes in the bottom of the fifth, sliced the Guardians' two-run margin in half when Victor Caratini socked a solo homer to right field with two outs in the sixth off Guardians reliever Matt Festa (2-2). Festa limited the damage to a lone run. Schanuel walks with bases loaded in 9th to lift Angels over Rangers 6-5
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Nolan Schanuel drew a bases-loaded walk from Hoby Milner in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Los Angeles Angels a 6-5 win over the Texas Rangers on Monday night. Travis d'Arnaud hit an early two-run homer off Texas starter Jacob deGrom and finished with three RBIs. Corey Seager launched a two-run shot off Yusei Kikuchi to put the Rangers ahead 2-0 two batters into the game. Josh Smith had an RBI double for Texas that tied it at 5 in the eighth. Luis Rengifo doubled off Rangers reliever Chris Martin (0-5) to open the ninth and went to third on Kevin Newman's one-out single to left field. Zach Neto was intentionally walked to load the bases. Texas manager Bruce Bochy summoned Milner for a lefty-lefty matchup with Schanuel, who fought back from an 0-2 count before taking a 3-2 changeup below the strike zone for his second career walk-off RBI. The Angels turned a 4-3 deficit into a 5-4 lead in the sixth when Rengifo singled with two outs, d'Arnaud hit an RBI double and LaMonte Wade Jr. followed with a pinch-hit RBI single. But the Rangers tied it against reliever Sam Bachman with two outs in the eighth. Jake Burger reached on a wild pitch when strike three in the dirt got past d'Arnaud and then scored from first on Smith's double. An anticipated pitchers' duel between All-Star starters didn't materialize, as deGrom gave up three runs and five hits in five innings while Kikuchi allowed four runs and six hits in five innings.
