
Meta sues Hong Kong-based company behind AI deepfake app that creates fake nude images
Meta said last Thursday that it had filed the complaint against Joy Timeline HK Limited, the maker of the CrushAI app, amid what it called a 'concerning growth of so-called 'nudify' apps online.'
Joy Timeline HK Limited allegedly violated Meta's rules by running CrushAI ads with at least 170 business accounts it created on Meta-owned Facebook and Instagram, CNN said citing the complaint filed to the District Court.
Some of the ads included AI-generated nude or sexually explicit images with captions such as 'upload a photo to strip for a minute' and 'erase any clothes on girls,' according to CNN.
Now, the tech giant is seeking an injunction to restrain the Hong Kong firm 'from creating, sharing, publishing, disseminating or contributing to the publication' of such advertisements on its platforms, media outlets reported.
The order would target any content relating to apps designed to generate AI or deepfake images containing nudity or NCII [non-consensual intimate image sharing] elements.
The tech giant is also seeking to claim back the US$289,200 (HK$2.28 million) it said it spent to take down, monitor, and investigate the ads that the Hong Kong company had allegedly bought since September 2023, The Witness reported.
Meta said in a statement last week that its lawsuit 'follows multiple attempts by Joy Timeline HK Limited to circumvent Meta's ad review process and continue placing these ads, after they were repeatedly removed for breaking our rules.'
'This legal action underscores both the seriousness with which we take this abuse and our commitment to doing all we can to protect our community from it,' it said.
Per its policies, Meta removes ads and Facebook and Instagram pages promoting so-called 'nudify' apps, blocks links on its platforms, and restricts related search terms so that AI-generated non-consensual sexually explicit images are not circulated, it added in its statement.
Meta said its lawsuit is part of broader action against these apps.
'We're building new technology to detect ads for nudify apps and sharing signals about these apps with other tech companies so they can take action too,' it said.

Nvidia supplier Victory Giant unveils plans for Hong Kong share offering
The company, one of mainland China's largest printed circuit board manufacturers, said it would sell stock in Hong Kong that would represent no more than 10 per cent of its existing share capital, according to a filing with the Shenzhen Stock Exchange on Wednesday. Underwriters would be granted the option to issue additional shares in Hong Kong by exercising an overallotment option. The company will allocate a portion of the offering to local retail investors, while the remainder will be available to an international cohort. Victory Giant was listed on the GEM board in Shenzhen in 2015, with 862.7 million shares traded on the onshore market, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Its shares have surged more than threefold so far this year to 191.2 yuan, giving it a market capitalisation of 162.77 billion yuan (US$22.7 billion). On July 21, the company said it would use the listing's proceeds to expand overseas and 'broaden its financing channels'. It said it would select an appropriate time to complete its listing plan. The company has not disclosed the size or timing of its share sale, but Bloomberg reported earlier this month that its listing could raise about US$1 billion. The company hired Hong Kong-based BDO as its auditor.

Hackers are increasingly targeting Malaysia 's growing automotive sector cybersecurity experts have warned in a new report that raises alarm over gaps in threat detection, including potential data theft via phones hooked to vehicular digital dashboards. One vulnerability involves attackers intercepting sensitive data from mobile devices connected to a compromised vehicle's infotainment systems through widely used platforms such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, according to Moke. 'The automotive and mobility sector is an emerging target sector in Malaysia,' Moke said. 'The proliferation of modern vehicles integrating complex computing, software, and the supporting infrastructure creates new points of vulnerability.' Ensign's report puts the automotive sector behind the public sector, telcos, hospitality and banks in the ranking of industries most vulnerable to cyberattacks.

Apple loses fourth AI researcher in a month to Meta's superintelligence team
Apple has lost its fourth AI researcher in a month to Meta Platforms, marking the latest setback to the iPhone maker's artificial intelligence efforts. Bowen Zhang, a key multimodal AI researcher at Apple, left the company on Friday and is set to join Meta's recently formed superintelligence team, according to people familiar with the matter. Zhang was part of the Apple foundation models group, or AFM, which built the core technology behind the company's AI platform. Meta previously lured away the leader of the team, Ruoming Pang, with a compensation package valued at more than US$200 million, Bloomberg News has reported. Two other researchers from that group – Tom Gunter and Mark Lee – also recently joined Meta. AFM is made up of several dozen engineers and researchers across Cupertino, California, and New York. In response to the job offers from Meta and others, Apple has been marginally increasing the pay of its AFM staffers, whether or not they have threatened to leave, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the moves are private. Still, the pay levels pale in comparison with those of rivals. Spokespeople for Apple and Meta declined to comment.
