Rory Scannell departs Munster after 'rollercoaster' 12 years
The centre's departure had been expected this summer, with Munster captain Tadhg Beirne hinting as much following last weekend's BKT United Rugby Championship quarter-final defeat to the Sharks.
It was a cruel way for the 31-year-old to sign off on his Munster career, as he missed one of his two place-kicks in the shootout defeat in Durban, on what was his 200th appearance for the province.
"It's a huge honour to have played for my home club 200 times, particularly alongside my brother [Niall]," Scannell said.
"It's been a rollercoaster of ups and downs over the last 12 years, but I have made so many great memories that will live with me forever.
"I've met some great people here and made friends for life.
"The squad is in a great place and I just want to wish the club very best of luck going forward and I will be supporting them wherever I am."
Having come through Presentation Brothers College, Cork, Scannell joined the Munster academy in 2013/14, and made his competitive debut for the province against Cardiff in November 2014.
Scannell was named Munster's Academy Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year following an impressive 2015/16 campaign, and went on to become the youngest player to reach 100 appearances for the province when he hit that mark in 2019 at the age of 25.
An Ireland international, he won all three of his caps on the 2017 summer tour of USA and Japan, playing for Ireland alongside his brother Niall.
Head of rugby operations and interim head coach Ian Costello said: "Everyone in the province couldn't speak highly enough of Rory as a player and a person.
"Very few players have contributed as much as he has to Munster Rugby over the past 12 years both on and off the field.
"He is the youngest ever player to reach 100 caps for Munster and was a key member of our leadership group.
"He is the ultimate team player and an excellent team-mate, always putting the club before himself.
"An extremely popular member of the squad, he will be sorely missed and we wish him and his wife Aisling the very best for the future."
Scannell is the latest Munster veteran whose departure has been confirmed this summer, joining Conor Murray, and the retiring Stephen Archer and Peter O'Mahony. Between them, the quartet have played 908 games for the province.

Chelsea files: ‘New Aguero', 16, could be Blues greatest youngster as record set with John Terry protege set for exit
Blues have snapped up the Champions League's youngest ever goalscorer Chelsea files: 'New Aguero', 16, could be Blues greatest youngster as record set with John Terry protege set for exit ALFIE Gilchrist was once tipped by fellow homegrown Chelsea defender John Terry to follow in his glorious footsteps. The Terry seal of approval came midway through the 2023/4 season which ended with Gilchrist signing a new contract, scoring his first senior goal for the Blues and being named Academy Player of the Year. 8 Alfie Gilchrist looks set to leave Chelsea Credit: Reuters 8 The popular right-back had mixed fortunes on loan at Sheffield United last season Credit: Getty But things move fast and the lifelong Chelsea fan is close to becoming the latest youth-team star to leave the club in search of first-team opportunities. In fairness to the Blues, homegrown trio Reece James, Trevoh Chalobah and Levi Colwill are three of the players who have blocked Gilchrist's path into the first-team defence as a right back or centre back. But the club policy of buying young talent from around the world has also pushed him towards the exit door. Even before the arrival of Jorrel Hato, the 19-year-old signed from Ajax for £37m, the writing was on the wall for Gilchrist, now 21. While he was still on loan at Sheffield United, Aaron Anselmino, 19 at the time, was recalled from loan at former club Boca Juniors and went on to play at the Club World Cup. Mamadou Sarr, also 19, was signed from Strasbourg earlier in this window before being loaned back to the sister club. So Gilchrist is all but certain to move in the coming weeks. But it need not be a case of taking one step backwards to take two forward, if interest from the Bundesliga turns into something concrete. How Nicolas Jackson could make £80m Newcastle switch | Transfers Exposed Yet Germany might turn out to be the most attractive prospect after a number of young English players blazed a trail there in recent years. Including one of Chelsea's incoming players this summer, Jamie Gittens. The winger, like Jadon Sancho before him, left Manchester City for Borussia Dortmund as a teenager and came back to England as a player worth tens of millions. If Gilchrist chooses the same route, he will hope to do the same, For now, though, wherever he goes, he will cost less than Chelsea's original £8m asking price and perhaps under £5m. 8 John Terry had tipped Gilchrist for glory Credit: PA DERRY BOY NEW Chelsea signing Jesse Derry has already been branded 'Proper Chels' for a post he made on social media on the day his move was announced. After sending a heartfelt goodbye to former club Crystal Palace, the tricky winger posted a picture of himself as a child in a classic Chelsea shirt with the caption 'From young. UTC (Up the Chels)' The son of former Premier League player Shaun Derry also posted the official announcement pictures with the caption "A dream come true to join the world champions " The 18 year old looked set to follow Jadon Sancho's pathway, with a move to the Bundesliga seeming imminent before the Blues swept him off his feet and away from Selhurst Park. Derry also has a cousin at Chelsea in the form of Reggie Watson, a highly rated academy prospect also signed from Palace in the last year. Derry's form for Palace's under-18 side earned him an England call-up. It remains to be seen whether he will stay at Chelsea for the coming season or go out on loan. 8 Jesse Derry has proved popular on social media since his move from Crystal Palace Credit: Getty SAT-NAV SET TO GREATNESS IT is no secret that Chelsea have spent a lot of money accruing some of the very best young talent in the world in the last few years. Estevao Willian, Jorrel Hato, Kendry Paez, Geovany Quenda and Mike Penders will ALL still be under the age of 25 by the time 2030 rolls around. But one of their youngsters with an incredibly high ceiling might just be going under the radar, in the form of 16-year-old Dastan Satpaev. The striker has already been likened to Sergio Aguero online, with videos of him playing for Kairat Almaty in Kazakhstan going viral. Chelsea paid close to £4million to secure his services, with the Kazakh forward set to sign a five-year contract with the option of an extra year when he turns 18. Satpaev most recently shone in the Champions League second qualifying round for his side, sparking a stunning comeback in a 3-2 win over KuPS Kuopio, and in the process becoming the youngest player to EVER score in the Champions League. But Andrey Santos is a young man who had hustle in abundance, and a determination to make it rarely matched by others. X account TheSecretScout revealed a message sent directly by Santos a number of years ago in which the young player talked about a YouTube video of him that the wanted to make public. Santos would've been around 16 at the time, the same age at which he made his professional debut for Vasco Da Gama before going on to make 47 appearances for the club. The message read "hello, I have a video, but I think it's on the yotuber (YouTube)" followed by a link to footage of him playing for Brazil's under-15's at the 2019 South American U-15 Championships. Santos made it to Europe and Chelsea. A strong season on loan at Strasbourg in 2024/5 has earned him a place in Enzo Maresca's first-team squad. But he will need to display even more elite talent and mentality to force his way past Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez and Romeo Lavia. 8 Andrey Santos pitched his YouTube videos to prominent X accounts when he was younger Credit: Alamy DAVID'S BIG HEART EX-Chelsea defender David Lee is getting on his bike after a brush with mortality. Lee, 55, who played 151 league games for the Blues between 1988 and 1998, had a life-saving triple-heart bypass operation earlier this year. To thank the medical staff and do his bit for others in a similar situation, he will cycle 130 miles in two days with friend Paul, from his home near Bristol to Stamford Bridge, aiming to arrive in time for the lunchtime kick off against Fulham on Saturday August 30. Lee is raising money for the British Heart Foundation and the Chelsea Past Players' Trust. HOW enthusiastic are Chelsea fans feeling ahead of the new season? Wednesday's Together In Glory event at Stamford Bridge should be a decent indication. Supporters are being given the chance to celebrate with stars from both the men's and women's teams after they won five trophies between them last season. The Club World Cup silverware lifted by Reece James last month will be put in the club museum cabinet for the first time. And the men's Conference League silverware, as well as the domestic Treble of trophies won by the women's team, will also be on display. When you think that six Chelsea players were part of the England squad that won the women's Euros, it has been a glittering few months for the club.

Everyone saying the same thing about Dan Sheehan's ban
The dust has fully settled on the British & Irish Lions tour of Australia. In what was expected to be an utterly dominant series win from the tourists, the Wallabies more than held their own for the majority of the series and if not for some injuries, they could've caused a huge upset. However after the dramatic Hugo Keenan try to win the second test, it meant the Lions had the series wrapped up before the third an final test in Sydney. Some would be forgiven for giving the inconsequential Aussie win a miss but the game didn't pass without incident. In the downpour in Sydney, play was interrupted because of lightning strikes and a resurgent Wallabies assured that the series didn't end in a sweep as off the back of a powerful forward pack, they beat the Lions 22-12. Dylan Pietsch of the Wallabies celebrates scoring a try. Pic:The game didn't pass without controversy however as Lions hooker and Irish international Dan Sheehan seemingly avoided on-pitch punishment for a dangerous clearout on Wallabies' 10 Tom Lynagh. Lynagh would have to leave the pitch for a Head Injury Assessment which he would fail. He may have avoided punishment from the referee or TMO but Sheehan was cited and has now been given a four-match ban, which can be reduced to three if he chooses to complete a tackle school. Dan Sheehan of British & Irish Lions is tackled by Max Jorgensen. Pic: Steve Christo/Sportsfile Sheehan is set to miss Leinster's pre-season game against Cardiff in September, followed by their trip to South Africa to face the Stormers to open the URC season, then their home season opener against the Sharks. and if he completes the tackle school he should be available for selection in the interpro derby against Munster at Croke Park on October 18. It appears that Leinster's second game of the season against the Bulls in Bloemfontein has been excluded from the ban as Sheehan would've been unlikely to feature in both of Leinster's games on the South Africa tour. However many fans have pointed out that Sheehan would've been highly unlikely to play in any of these games, making the ban redundant. Sheehan along with the rest of the Irish portion of the Lions squad are likely to received some much deserved time off after an extended season. The earliest people should expect any of the Lions to play is that weekend of the Leinster-Munster interpro on October 18 but even then not every player will feature. Dan Sheehan with Harry Wilson of Australia. Pic: INPHO/Dan Sheridan One commenter on X said; 'This is a pretty meaningless ban and makes a mockery of all the effort world rugby has made (rightly/wrongly) over the last few years. Remember that Sam Kane got a straight red card in the World Cup final for something less that what Sheehan did.' Another said; ' Won't miss any 'real' games. Got at least the next 6 weeks off. If the foul is in an international game, ban should be international, not including the domestic league games. And tackle/clear out school is a joke.' Dan Sheehan. Pic: INPHO/Billy Stickland The banning system in rugby doesn't really feel fit for purpose at the moment but it's hard to really find a fair solution. There's too many ways for players to downgrade their punishment and end up not serving an adequate punishment for the foul they commit. If he returns in time Dan Sheehan should be available for selection for the Croke Park clash against Munster and their home match against Zebre before Ireland go to Chicago to play the All Blacks on November 1.

Dan Sheehan handed hefty ban after illegal play vs Australia
Dan Sheehan has been given a four-match suspension following an illegal clear-out that went unpunished against Australia. The Lions hooker made the challenge on Tom Lynagh during Saturday's 22-12 loss to Joe Schmidt's side and it initially went unnoticed by Georgian referee Nika Amashukeli. However, the 26-year-old has now been retrospectively cited by World Rugby's independent review committee. Sheehan has received a four-match ban. Pic: INPHO/Dan Sheridan They deemed Sheehan's actions to be reckless, that contact was made with Lynagh's head and ruled the action amounted to a high degree of danger without mitigation. The sanction will be reduced to three games, subject to the Irish international successfully completing a coaching intervention course. Replays showed that Sheehan's elbow appeared to make contact with his opponent's head. Tom Lynagh was forced to go off for a HIA after the incident. Pic:Lynagh kicked a penalty moments after the incident but was then withdrawn for a head injury assessment (HIA) and did not return. Sheehan, who was captaining the Lions at the time after skipper Maro Itoje failed a HIA, has accepted the sanction. However, in his submissions, the player did not agree foul play occurred or that the offence warranted the citing. However, the 26-year-old has now been retrospectively cited by World Rugby's independent review committee. Pic: Brendan Moran/Sportsfile Sheehan will be unavailable for Leinster's pre-season clash with Cardiff on September 13 and the URC fixtures against South African sides the Stormers and the Sharks on September 26 and October 11 respectively. If he serves the full four-match ban, the forward will also sit out his side's URC clash with rivals Munster on October 18. This derby was recently confirmed to be played at Croke Park. With the RDS under redevelopment, Leinster are using the Aviva Stadium and Croker as their home grounds. Last year's derby was also held at GAA HQ, where over 80,000 spectators watched the home side earn a 26-12 victory. Leinster have said that they will return to the RDS for the start of the 2026/27 season. They will play most of their home games this season at the Aviva with some games designated for Croke Park. Before the public sale of tickets for the Munster clash, there will be a window for current Leinster Rugby season ticket holders to upgrade their tickets. This is the same process as would have applied to previous Munster games being hosted at the Aviva Stadium, rather than the RDS. Once Leinster's season ticket holders have had a window to access tickets, the remaining tickets will then go on sale to the public.
