
Greek island dubbed ‘Mykonos of the Sporades' is a gem that's 26C in September
Skiathos, a Greek island in the Sporades archipelago, has showstopper beaches, azure waters and nightlife that rivals its iconic Cyclades counterpart.
Summer stretches well into September, with temperatures hovering between 21°C and 26°C.
And, with easyJet flights from £66 one-way — Metro found a direct route on Thursday, September 18 from London Gatwick — getting there won't break the bank.

Skiathos's claim to fame is the 2008 Hollywood blockbuster, Mamma Mia! Part of the movie, inspired by the songs of ABBA, was filmed here.
The rest was filmed on Skopelos, a craggy island an hour's ferry ride away. Metro's Sophie-May Williams spent a week exploring the island in July last year, and loved it for its exceptional natural beauty, friendly locals, and delicious food. You can read her guide to Skopelos here.
But back to Skiathos. While Skopelos feels a bit like the land that time forgot, this island is fizzing with life.
Pop culture lovers can immerse themselves in the world of film on the highly-rated Mammia Mia! tour. For £44, you can spend six hours visiting all the major filming locations.
Skiathos also has stunning spots to sunbathe and swim. Lalaria is the perfect choice for a secluded experience. Located in the north of the island, expect crystal-clear waters, towering cliffs and white pebble beaches.
Koukounaries in the southwest is popular for watersports. It boasts a long stretch of sandy beach, turquoise waters, and a pine forest backdrop.
After a lively atmosphere? It's all about Banana Beach. Comprised of two beaches — Big Banana and Little Banana — these spots offer sunbeds, umbrellas, and beach bars.
Word of warning: Little Banana is a nudist beach.
Skiathos' beauty isn't confined to the coast. There are heaps of inland hiking trails that take you through verdant greenery and across streams.
Koukounaries Beach Loop is one of the most popular, winding through wetlands, pine forests, and the Koukounaries Lagoon.
The Olive Path is a longer, more challenging route. It starts in Skiathos Town, winds through olive groves and rural landscapes, and ends at Nikotsara beach on the northern shore.
The capital 'city' (home to a permanent population of under 5,000) boasts shops, bars, and traditional tavernas on every corner.
Spend an afternoon weaving through the maze of narrow streets, whitewashed houses and bougainvillea-draped balconies. You'll pass locals selling homemade crafts, from seaweed soap to geometric pottery.
For a romantic sunset, head to the Bourtzi peninsula. It's a former Venetian fortress in the old port of Skiathos, connected to the main island by a small bridge.
Finish the day with a short stroll back to the harbour for dinner and drinks, which in true Greek style, can last all night.
Expect waiters to ply you with a complimentary shot of Raki — a strong aniseed aperitif — when paying the bill.
During my trip to Skopelos last year, I spent a few days exploring Skiathos.
The descent into the airport was one of the most breathtaking I've ever experienced: the cluster of Sporades islands broke up the cobalt waters, as boats bobbed up and down in the Aegean Sea.
At one point, we were so close we could see people popping champagne on deck.
The taxi from the airport to our accommodation — a rustic boutique hotel called BONSAI — took just eight minutes and cost €10 (£8.65). Rooms start from £50 per night.
The hotel manager was always on hand to help: her recommendations of the best 'hidden gems' on the island led us to a tiny unnamed cove five minutes from our room. Complete with cerulean waters and golden sands, there wasn't another tourist in sight. It was a true local spot.
From there, we strolled six minutes further inland and stumbled upon a classic Greek taverna called Marmita.
Because the restaurant is away from the harbour, the experience felt a lot more authentic. Menus weren't littered with pictures, and the prices were a lot cheaper than the touristy joints.
The lamb cooked in fennel leaves and served with potatoes and green vegetables was exquisite, and only cost €16.50 (£14.27). A glass of house red wine was €4 (£3.89).
Skiathos enjoys over 300 days of sunshine each year, thanks to its trusty Mediterranean climate. This means summers are hot and dry, and winters are wet and mild.
The summer months — June, July, and August — are the hottest, averaging between 27°C and 29°C. The shoulder seasons of May, June, and September, which command fewer crowds, peak around 23°C to 26°C.
The best time to visit is early in the shoulder season, as during autumn and winter, the island winds down for the year.
To backtrack, Mykonos introduced a 'sustainable tourism fee' for cruise passengers in July. More Trending
Passengers disembarking are now required to pay a €20 (£17.29) high-season fee as part of Greece's initiative to manage tourism and its impact.
While Skiathos has a high volume of tourists — approximately half a million each year — Mayor Thodoris Tzoumas has launched a sustainable tourism initiative to control the influx.
During a recent visit to the island, he briefed Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on the €25 million programme. It includes investments in infrastructure and the development of marine projects designed to improve visitor experience and support long-term growth.

Stephen Mangan admits: ‘I can be just as ruthless as everybody else'
It's not easy to be ruthless and to throw other people under the bus. At least, that's what one might assume… until there's a £250,000 prize up for grabs. That's the aim of the game in ITV's The Fortune Hotel, which is back for its second series tonight, as 11 pairs – a mixture of friends, colleagues, relatives and partners – battle it out in a game of treachery while basking in the Caribbean sunshine. 'It's a really difficult game, because they really get to know and like each other over the course of the time we're there,' host Stephen Mangan tells Metro. 'It's really difficult to brutally pull the plug on another pair and send them home, but you have to do it.' Stephen, an actor, presenter and comedian, imagined how he'd fare if he took part in the competition – and he had a frank admission to make. I probably wouldn't. I'd probably be just as ruthless as everybody else,' he admits. 'I don't know. I mean, it's hard to know. I think the great thing is, until you're in that situation… there's some twists this year that put people under enormous pressure. It's amazing to watch. I wouldn't want to be in that position myself.' In real life, Stephen is widely regarded as a TV nice guy, years after playing the arrogant Guy Secretan in Green Wing and going toe to toe with Steve Coogan in I'm Alan Partridge. For several years, I've enjoyed watching him host one of my favourite shows, the ever-wholesome Portrait Artist of the Year. He has a positive outlook on the world, explaining that he 'fundamentally' believes that 'most people are trustworthy'. Nonetheless, a show like The Fortune Hotel proves that sometimes, you need to listen to your gut when it's telling you to take a closer look. 'I think why the show is so interesting is because we all spend our lives trying to work out if people are being straight with us, if people are trying to pull the wool over our eyes, if they're trying to pull a fast one,' Stephen says. 'That's one of the challenges of being an adult these days – trying to work out who's on your side, who wishes you well, and who is trying to get one over on you. 'So it's fascinating. We all hope that we can tell if people are lying to us, but some people are really, really good at it.' The launch of The Fortune Hotel series two comes after the series made its debut on ITV last year, with mother-and-son duo Jo-Anne and Will taking home the £210,000 cash prize. This time around, the contestants had the benefit of being able to watch the previous season to try and suss out the game. But, they might not be as prepared as they think. This year, there are 11 pairs of competitors at the start of The Fortune Hotel. Those who make it into the luxurious hotel in the Caribbean are each given a briefcase – one of which contains the coveted £250,000 cash prize. Another briefcase contains an 'early checkout card', which could result in a pair being sent home. All of the others contain blank sheets of paper. At the end of each day, the contestants come together in the hotel bar and have the chance to swap their cases. Their decisions are crucial, as they could cause another pair to suspect that they have the winning or losing case. Whoever ends up with the 'early checkout card' by the end of the night is sent home. They also take part in challenges to try and figure out who has which case as the show progresses. It's a game of logic combined with luck. 'It was exciting the first time around because it was a show that had never been done before. Sometimes these shows are formats that they've tried in other countries and have been a hit, so they know how they work. But we were inventing a brand new game, which is exciting and terrifying at the same time,' the host recalls. 'The first series was exciting to see if it worked. And it did. It worked really well, so much so that we got our second series. Then the interesting thing is, how do you make it better?' So how do you make it better? 'More surprises, more challenges, more epic things happening,' Stephen promises. He adds that some of the competitors coming to the series with a plan based on the previous season 'made it more exciting', as they were more willing to take risks. 'They just went for it. It made those evenings in Lady Luck's Bar so tense, so dramatic, so exciting.' More Trending At this point, it's unknown whether The Fortune Hotel will come back for a third series. But Stephen hopes that by the time audiences finish the second, they'll feel 'bereft' – so much more that they'll demand its return. 'Every episode gets more exciting. Every episode, it's harder to predict what's going to happen,' he states. 'There are surprises from the beginning, first minute till the last. Missing Michele Ann Joy Bourda 'often swims in cold water and goes on hours-long hikes'
Michele Ann Joy Bourda disappeared after swimming at Ofrynio beach in Kavala in Greece at around noon on Friday - and now authorities are concerned for the tourist A British tourist who vanished from her sunlounger on a beach in Greece while her husband was asleep is "used to swimming in cold water," her neighbours said today. Michele Ann Joy Bourda, aged 59, also often spends whole days rambling and exploring in the countryside, according to those who know her. They shed insights into her character and lifestyle, offering hope as a search for Michele enters its fourth day. Michele, who is retired, had been swimming at Ofrynio beach in the city of Kavala in Greece at around noon on Friday before she disappeared. A targeted land and sea search for her has now ceased, according to the central port authority in Kavala, but Michele's neighbours maintain hope. One said: "She has always dressed in walking gear with a fleece and boots or a cagoule. She is really into the outdoors." It comes after a Brit who vanished in Paris was discovered safe some two weeks later. A summer sports instructor said he saw someone who matched Michele's description swimming near the beach on Friday. He said the woman didn't appear to be in difficulty in the water. Michele, whose belongings were left behind on her sun lounger after she vanished, was described as very adventurous and active today. Her neighbours in Glasgow said she likes hiking and swimming in cold water. One neighbour told Mail Online: "They've got bikes, and are quite active. They like to go walking, they like to go wild swimming. "They would go, and they would often be away for the whole day in the summer, and then if we saw them coming in and out and they would say, 'oh, we've been somewhere up north and we were swimming'. And I would see her sometimes sit and reading in the garden." The friends said they often see Michele and husband Christos out walking with backpacks on or loading the car for another day trip in the wild. Another neighbour added: "They've couple are very private and keep themselves to themselves. She is very quiet and timid and he is a bit more commanding. They moved to Glasgow about six years ago because their son is studying here.' "They are retired and tend to go everywhere together even though they have two cars. They are quite guarded and private but I'm very shocked that she has gone missing." Christos, who is Greek, had been sleeping and woke up to find Michele had vanished from the beach. He reportedly asked the owners of a nearby shop if they had seen his wife, but had no joy on Friday.
