James Gunn's new ‘Superman' returns to screens with ‘kindness, flying dogs and space battles'

LONDON, July 3 — Donning the famous red cape for the first time in the new Superman movie gave actor David Corenswet a big confidence boost.
A relative newcomer, Corenswet follows in the footsteps of Christopher Reeve and more recently Henry Cavill, taking over the role of Clark Kent and Superman in the reboot movie, which was launched with a red carpet fan event in London yesterday.
'When the cape gets on, it really ties the whole thing together. You walk out with it flowing behind you, you feel like, 'Yeah, I'm all right, I'll do okay',' Corenswet, whose acting credits include TV series The Politician and Hollywood and films Twisters and Pearl, said on the red carpet.
Superman offers the first look at director James Gunn's vision for the remake of the DC Universe (DCU) at Warner Bros .
The Guardians of the Galaxy filmmaker, who also wrote the Superman screenplay, said he wanted to combine elements from the comic books and the mythos of Superman in cinema.
'My Superman is about, you know, in a world where there's so much meanness and so many petty things happening, Superman, who can often be seen as old-fashioned or too earnest, too kind, he is those things. I think that's the most rebellious thing that you can be in this day and age,' Gunn said.
'It's a movie about kindness. But it's all told in this universe with giant monsters and flying dogs and robots and space battles and everything else.'
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel actress Rachel Brosnahan takes on the role of Lois Lane and Nosferatu, About a Boy and X-Men franchise actor Nicholas Hoult stars as Superman's nemesis Lex Luthor.
Hoult also drew inspiration from comic books for his portrayal of the iconic villain.
'For instance, reading All-Star Superman, Lex really prides himself on being the peak alpha human, and so I really wanted to bring that kind of energy,' Hoult said.
Brosnahan said her predecessors in the role had set the bar high. Gunn's vision for the movie was what set it aside from previous films, she said.
'I think James's knowledge of and love for these characters and the different adventures that he's taking them on with the different friends he's taking them with, kind of inherently brings it into present day,' said Brosnahan.

James Gunn on why 'movie industry is dying' and what 'killed' Marvel

James Gunn's next movie is the summer tent pole Superman, due out middle of July. Photo: Richard Shotwell/Invision/AP James Gunn has his own theory about why the movie industry is 'dying'. The filmmaker, screenwriter and co-head of DC Studios contends that the reason for bad movies is Hollywood's tendency to begin productions before screenplays are complete, he told Rolling Stone in a new interview. 'I do believe that the reason why the movie industry is dying is not because of people not wanting to see movies. "It's not because of home screens getting so good,' Gunn said. 'The No.1 reason is because people are making movies without a finished screenplay.' That's why one of his main rules at DC Studios is that movies must have finished scripts before they go into production. In fact, Gunn just scrapped a project because the screenplay wasn't ready, he said. On the other hand, he described the scripts for the upcoming DC films Supergirl, Lanterns and Clayface as 'so (expletive) good.' Before taking the reins of DC Studios in 2022, Gunn co-wrote and directed three Guardians Of The Galaxy movies for now-competitor Marvel Studios, which he said has been 'killed' by Disney's directive to increase output. 'We don't have the mandate to have a certain amount of movies and TV shows every year,' Gunn said of DC Studios. 'So we're going to put out everything that we think is of the highest quality.' During the interview, Gunn also addressed rumours that Matt Reeves' sequel to The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson, has been axed. The film, which Gunn confirmed is still titled The Brave And The Bold, has been delayed a year and is now expected in October 2027. 'That's the other thing I hear all the time — that Batman Part II is cancelled. It's not cancelled," Gunn said. 'We don't have a script. Matt's slow. Let him take his time. Let him do what he's doing. God, people are mean. Let him do his thing, man.' Finishing the scripts for the The Batman sequel and Wonder Woman are among DC Studios' top priorities, Gunn noted. Additionally, Gunn reflected on the 2018 scandal that saw him briefly fired from Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 when tweets resurfaced of him joking about pedophilia and rape. He said without that experience, his script for Superman — hitting theatres July 10 — would have been much different. 'That opened the door for me to stop creating so that people would like me. That's downplaying it — so people would love me,' Gunn said. 'I think on some level, everything I had done came from a pleasing place.' When asked if he's worried about ever running out of ideas, Gunn didn't seem too concerned. 'If I do, then I'll go raise goats,' he said. 'I really am fine. There's a lot of directors who get worse as they get older, and I don't wanna do that. "Or maybe I do — I don't know. It's like, if it runs out — it hasn't so far. But who knows?' – Los Angeles Times/Tribune News Service

BBC to stop showing ‘high-risk' acts live after Bob Vylan row

LONDON: The BBC said Thursday it would no longer live-broadcast musical performances deemed 'high risk' following controversy over the behaviour of punk-rap duo Bob Vylan during their Glastonbury set. The British broadcaster has attracted criticism for having failed to pull a livestream of the performance after its frontman made anti-Israel comments at the festival in southwest England last week. British police said Monday they were launching a criminal investigation into the remarks made by Bob Vylan at the festival in southwestern England. British and other politicians condemned London-based duo Bob Vylan, who often tackle racism in their tracks, after they led the crowds in chants of 'Death to the IDF' -- the Israeli military. 'We fully understand the strength of feeling regarding Bob Vylan's live appearance at Glastonbury on the BBC,' the broadcaster said in its latest statement. 'Errors were made both in the lead-up to and during' the appearance, it admitted. 'We are taking actions to ensure proper accountability for those found to be responsible for those failings in the live broadcast,' while setting out some immediate changes to the streaming of music events, the BBC added. 'Any music performances deemed high risk will now not be broadcast live or streamed live,' the statement said. – AFP
