"There Can Be No Other Name," Says Great-Grandson Of Mysore Pak's Inventor Amid Renaming Row
S Nataraj, a descendant of royal cook Kakasura Madappa, who still makes and sells Mysore Pak in Mysuru, told News18, "Call it Mysore Pak - there can be no other name for this invention passed down by our ancestors." He added, "Just like every monument or tradition has its rightful name, Mysore Pak does too. It should not be altered or misrepresented."
Explaining the origin of the name, Nataraj said, "The word 'Paaka' in Kannada refers to a sugary syrup. Since it was created in Mysore, it came to be known as Mysore Pak. There is no question of calling it anything else."
Stressing the importance of retaining the original name, he said, "Wherever you go in the world, when someone sees the sweet, they should be able to identify and call it Mysore Pak. Nobody has the right to change its name."
The family continues to run the famous Guru Sweets in Mysuru, Karnataka. Now in its fifth generation, the shop was originally started by Nataraj's great-grandfather to popularise the royal sweet beyond the palace walls and into the public domain.

According to Sumegh S, a fourth-generation member of the family, Mysore Pak is much more than a sweet. It holds deep cultural and historical significance for Mysuru and Karnataka.
"Mysore Pak is the pride of Mysuru, Karnataka, and the Kannadiga community. It reflects the sweetness of our people and the richness of Kannada culture. We only stand by the sweet our forefather created - Mysore Pak - which is now globally known. Do not drag it into unnecessary controversies," he told News18.
Prepared using gram flour, sugar, and generous amounts of ghee, Mysore Pak is known for its crumbly yet melt-in-the-mouth texture. It remains a popular treat across India, especially during festivals and family celebrations.

Bengaluru civil court issues gag order directing Kamal Haasan against speaking about Kannada
The court of the 31st Additional City Civil and Sessions judge issued a gag order against Kamal Haasan on July 4, following a suit filed by Mahesh Joshi, chairman of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat, on July 2. The Kannada Sahitya Parishat has alleged that remarks made by the actor suggested the 'superiority of one language over the other'. The suit sought to restrain Kamal Hassan from making remarks in the future that could hurt the sentiments of the Kannada people. In the order restraining Haasan from commenting on the Kannada language, the civil court stated that the Kannada Sahitya Parishat is 'empowered to take any steps in the interest of Kannadigas, their literature and culture.' 'This court is of the considered view that granting ex-parte ad-interim relief of temporary injunction against the defendant is necessary in order to prevent the defendant from making any statement/remarks claiming linguistic superiority of one language over other and thereby hurting the sentiments of Kannada people in respect of their land, language and culture till the next date of hearing,' the civil court said. The court noted that the Kannada Sahitya Parishat president said that Kamal Haasan had remarked, 'Kannada was born out of Tamil,' during a film promotion, which allegedly hurt the sentiments of Kannadigas. 'It is the specific allegation of the plaintiffs that by making such remarks, the defendant is claiming superiority of one language over the other. Hence, he prays to restrain the defendant from making the same or similar remarks in future, having the effect of hurting the sentiments of Kannada people in respect of their land, language and culture,' the court noted. 'If this court, instead of granting ex parte ad-interim order of temporary injunction, orders for the issuance of notice to the defendant, then the very purpose of granting temporary injunction would be defeated by delay,' the civil court said in its order. 'The defendant, his agents, assigns, representatives or any person acting under or through them are hereby restrained, by way ad-interim ex parte order of temporary injunction, from posting, making, issuing, writing, publishing and/or distributing any statement or remarks claiming linguist superiority over Kannada language or by making any statements having the effect of causing hurt or defaming the Kannada language, literature, land and culture till the next date of hearing,' the civil court said. Kamal Haasan made the remarks about Kannada during the audio release of his film Thug Life in Chennai in May. The Mani Ratnam-directed movie, which was due for release on June 5 across India, was stalled in Karnataka following an outrage over his remark that 'Tamil gave birth to Kannada'. The Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) sought an apology from the actor to facilitate the release of the film, even as pro-Kannada groups threatened to target theatres if the movie is screened. Kamal Haasan, who was recently nominated to the parliament as a Rajya Sabha member from Tamil Nadu, did not acquiesce to the demand for an apology, and instead chose not to release Thug Life in Karnataka. The filmmakers approached the Supreme Court after the Karnataka High Court also suggested the actor should apologise to facilitate the film's release. On June 18, the Supreme Court directed the Karnataka Government to ensure the uninterrupted release of Thug Life after the state filed an affidavit confirming that there would be no restrictions on the movie's release. The top court said the state must act swiftly against any groups attempting to disrupt the film's release forcibly.

Siddaramaiah Clarifies After MLA's 'Development Or Guarantees' Remark
Bengaluru: Days after his close aide asked people to choose either election guarantees or development while hinting at a lack of funds, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Monday said that there was "no question" of changing the guarantee programmes. "There's no question of changing the guarantees programmes. It's for the poor from all communities and gives them economic and social security," he told reporters. Siddaramaiah's economic adviser, Basavaraj Raya Reddy, on Saturday told a public rally to choose between election guarantees and development. "Say I don't want rice or anything, if you say, "only build village roads", we will do that too. I will suggest Siddaramaiah stop it as people are asking us to, should I tell him?" he was heard saying in Kannada while addressing a gathering during the inauguration of a school building in his assembly constituency, Yelburga. "If you want an asphalt road or a school, understand that everything can't be done at once. You need to make it clear, say you don't want these other benefits, stop all that. If you ask us to build roads, we will build roads. If you say, "Build temples", we'll build only temples. It is because we must manage everything with the funds available," Mr Reddy said while hinting at a fund crunch. Siddaramaiah, however, said the state government is giving funds to all the MLAs. "This time, we are giving each MLA, even those from the Opposition, funds to build roads and bridges," the senior Congress leader said. The BJP seized on the opportunity to attack the Siddaramaiah-led government. "I think the government is bankrupt now. They are neither giving (election) guarantees nor building roads. They are not doing any development works and are just involved in corruption," Union Minister Prahlad Joshi, who is a Member of Parliament from Karnataka's Dharwad, told reporters.

In a notable shift, the Eastern Command of the Indian Army has started using regional languages on social media to connect with a broader audience. For the first time, the Eastern Command has posted updates in Bengali and Manipuri (Meitei) languages on its official social media platforms. Sources in the defence establishment told News18 that this is part of a larger plan to regularly communicate in local languages, making the Army's outreach more inclusive and accessible. Two days ago, the Eastern Command shared a post about the upcoming 2025 Durand Cup in Bengali and Manipuri — marking the first time such communication has gone regional. A senior officer told News18, 'For the first time, we are putting out content in Bengali and Assamese, in addition to Hindi and English. The aim is to connect with everyone, across all regions." Officials within the Eastern Command emphasised that this initiative is not just about promotion — it's about strengthening the Army's bond with the people. 'It is important that villagers and citizens across the country, especially in border areas, understand what the Indian Army stands for. From the Bengal border to Arunachal Pradesh, these are sensitive zones. Misinformation often spreads easily. Our goal is to build trust and provide a sense of security," said a source. This digital regional outreach is expected to be especially impactful in regions like Arunachal Pradesh, where disinformation campaigns are frequent. The Army believes that communicating in local languages will not only counter misinformation but also reassure civilians of the Army's presence and support. The Eastern Command's initiative has started with Bengali and Manipuri, but officials confirm that posts in other regional languages will follow soon. Meanwhile, preparations are underway for the 2025 Durand Cup — officially titled the IndianOil Durand Cup due to its sponsorship by Indian Oil Corporation. The tournament, now in its 134th edition, is Asia's oldest football competition and the fourth to be organised under the aegis of the Asian Football Confederation. The Durand Cup is jointly hosted by the Durand Football Tournament Society, the All India Football Federation (AIFF), the Eastern Command of the Indian Armed Forces, and the Government of West Bengal, with additional support from the governments of Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, and Jharkhand. This tournament holds a special place in the hearts of Bengalis, and officials believe that the use of Bengali in Army communications around the event will forge a deeper emotional connection with the local population.
