Touchline makes stylish Hollywoodbets Durban July debut at Saso's brunch marquee

Rapper Touchline made his debut at the Hollywoodbets Durban July and was a guest at Saso's brunch marquee. Image: Instagram/karabo_selolo Rapper Touchline attended the Hollywoodbets Durban July for the first time this year and was a guest at Saso's Brunch Marquee. Speaking to IOL, the rapper, whose real name is Thabo Mahlwele, shared how he had felt a bit of pressure when it came to attending Africa's biggest horse racing event. He enlisted the help of a stylist, KandyBoi, to help execute the Marvels of Mzansi theme. 'We just put a few things together and came up with like a look for myself, who never wears formal clothing, by the way. I went with him (KandyBoi) because I was probably going to buy a tracksuit.' Touchline admitted that his late arrival had him missing out on the day's main attraction, the horse races. 'It looks a lot like a lot of the events that we attend, but I've also had a limited experience because I haven't seen the rest of it,' he shared. Video Player is loading. 'I'm very grateful to be here, to see that your gift can put you in spaces that you couldn't even dream of, and meet people that you just looked at and marveled at,' he shared. For its second year at the Hollywoodbets Durban July, Saso's Brunch Marquee moved away from the winning post, but expanded in terms of size, allowing for 800 guests. Curated by hip-hop star and cultural tastemaker Lusaso 'Saso' Ngcobo, the marquee made headlines last year for its historic debut and unmatched atmosphere. Once again, Saso's Brunch Marquee partnered with Maxhosa Africa for the decor and lifestyle elements. MaXhosa founder Laduma Ngxokolo, speaking to IOL, shared why they decided to come on board for the second time. 'Last year, we showed off; this year, we showed out and we showed up,' expressed Ngxokolo. It's a beautiful space, I don't think people get it yet, but once it hits their head, it will be a type of experience that they will always be longing for. 'I think Saso's Brunch has got its specific, well-refined market, if we're talking levels, if we're talking nuances.' Ngxokolo explained that when it came to the deco, MaXhosa curated elements such as the wallpaper, carpets, cushions, throws, and umbrellas. 'These are products that we offer as part of our Makosa Lifestyle brand, which is an extension of MaXhosa, a luxury fashion brand.' For first-timers like Touchline, the Hollywoodbets Durban July offered more than fashion, it was a moment of affirmation, proof that talent and authenticity can open doors to the grandest stages. Why the Mercedes-Benz V-Class is the ultimate group experience

The ultimate girls' trip in the Mercedes-Benz V-Class. (From left to right): Lisa KV, Mihlali Ndamase, and Lisa Madibe, Image: Supplied Image: Supplied In a weekend where fashion, culture, and celebration collide, the journey to the Hollywoodbets Durban July has become just as significant as the event itself. This year, that journey was led by a striking Mercedes-Benz V-Class convoy, offering a glimpse into the future of group travel - spacious, stylish, and entirely on your own terms. Leading the convoy were some of South Africa's most recognisable style and lifestyle voices - Mihlali Ndamase, Lisa Madibe, and Lisa K.V - each behind the tinted windows of their own V-Class vehicle. The road trip kicked off in Johannesburg and wound through KwaZulu-Natal's scenic Midlands, with curated pit stops, content creation moments, and relaxed luxury defining the ride. What unfolded wasn't just a drive - it was a mobile lounge experience. Think: panoramic sunroofs, plush leather seats, ambient lighting, and unparalleled amounts of space to stretch out, steam an outfit, or shoot a transition reel. Whether used as a glam hub or a private retreat before the buzz of the July, the V-Class offered an environment where creators could connect, rest and express themselves freely - together, yet comfortably apart. Mercedes-Benz V-Class lineup, Image: Supplied Image: Supplied Adding a whisper of future-forward intrigue to the convoy was the presence of the new all-electric Mercedes-Benz EQV - a subtle teaser of what sustainable group luxury could look like on South Africa's roads. Silent, powerful, and fully electric, the EQV joined the journey as a preview of what's to come. 'Group travel has evolved - it's no longer about squeezing into one vehicle and compromising comfort. It's about experience, individuality, and sharing the road in a way that feels effortless,' says Natasha Jardim, Managing Executive at Mercedes-Benz Vans South Africa. 'The V-Class is designed for this new kind of traveller - one who values space, connection and style. And with the EQV on the horizon, that experience is about to get even more progressive.' As the Durban July weekend unfolded, it was clear the V-Class isn't just a people mover. It's the ultimate group experience, designed for the kind of travel that values both the destination and everything in between.

Video: What you missed at the Durban July — Ezokhetho's chicken-feet chic, luxury cars and Mzansi celebs

As the horses thundered down the track at the Hollywoodbets Durban July, it wasn't just the race that had hearts racing; it was the fashion. This year, Johannesburg-based label Ezokhetho, helmed by the visionary Mpumi Dhlamini, reminded the country why local fashion deserves a place on the global stage. Drawing deep inspiration from the golden age of Sophiatown, Ezokhetho's pieces told stories far beyond fabric. With bold prints, structured silhouettes, and the now-iconic chicken feet motif, the label turned heads and sparked conversations. 'You are your billboard,' says Mpumi. 'Your clothing speaks before you do.' Reimagining Sophiatown Founded in 2017 and headquartered in Victoria Yards, Ezokhetho was born from a desire to honour the spirit of Sophiatown, an era where fashion was a form of protest, and style was a stand. Dhlamini's label revives that spirit for a new generation of wearers who see clothes not just as garments but as vessels of meaning. 'The table' is Ezokhetho's philosophy: a place where everyone is invited to be seen, heard, and styled. It's fashion with a cause, authentic, confrontational, and unapologetically South African. This year's theme, 'Marvelling at the Marvels of Mzansi,' dovetails perfectly with Ezokhetho's ethos. Mpumi's tips for race-day dressing or any other fashion-focused event are not just about standing out, but standing firm in your identity: Prints as memory: From classic florals to striking geometrics, Ezokhetho's prints archive lived experiences. Silhouettes with purpose: Think strong tailoring and deliberate shapes that speak of dignity and presence. Symbols that spark dialogue: The chicken feet motif, a uniquely local and nostalgic reference, appears on everything from streetwear to formal wear. Ageless style: 'Style has no expiry date,' says Mpumi. Whether worn by a Gen Z trendsetter or a stylish elder, Ezokhetho pieces radiate a timeless edge. A legacy on the runway More than just a fashion house, Ezokhetho utilises its runway moments to highlight pressing social issues, such as gender-based violence, poverty, and inequality. Garments feature handwritten notes, illustrations, and messages that demand attention. 'We're not just here for applause,' says Dhlamini. 'We want people to reflect.' OMODA Fashion Show – a high fashion show by the renowned South African fashion house Khosi Nkosi which will showcase their interpretation of 'Marvels of Mzansi. The OMODA Royalty Marquee emerged as a pinnacle of glamour and innovation. DJ Zinhle electrified the crowd with a powerful return to her KZN roots, while the Marvels of Mzansi theme was brought to life with stunning execution. LootLove. Wear the story For Mpumi Dhlamini, fashion is not just about the fit or the flair; it's about the feeling. 'Dress up, yes. But ask yourself, what story are you telling?' Mpumi asks.
