Measles cases in the Netherlands linked to infections imported from Morocco
Estimated read time: 1'
Measles infections in the Netherlands have surged in recent weeks, with many of the reported cases imported from Morocco. Since September 2023, Morocco has been grappling with an unprecedented measles epidemic, reporting nearly 25,000 suspected cases, including 6,300 confirmed, and 120 deaths.
According to data from the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM), 45 new measles cases have been reported in the Netherlands in the past two weeks. Among those infected, at least 17 contracted the virus while in Morocco. The rise in infections in the Netherlands is partly attributed to declining vaccination rates, with 202 reported cases in 2024 and already over half that number this year.
Similar trends are being reported in France and Spain, where measles cases imported from Morocco have recently been detected. In Spain, 107 confirmed measles cases were reported in the first eight weeks of 2025, across eight active clusters in various regions. Spanish health authorities have indicated that 34% of confirmed cases in Spain this year are linked to imported infections, primarily from Morocco and Romania.
In France, health authorities reported 13 cases of measles imported or linked to imports after a stay in Morocco since January 1, 2025, across several regions.

Real Madrid Reconsiders Ouazane Transfer After Dutch Medical Clears Moroccan Teen
Real Madrid may reignite talks to sign Moroccan teenager Abdellah Ouazane after new medical tests contradicted earlier concerns that had stalled the deal. According to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf , a full examination carried out at Amsterdam's University Medical Centre (UMC) found no health issues and deemed the 17-year-old 'fully fit for top-level sport'. The findings challenge the initial assessment from Madrid's medical team, which raised unspecified red flags and led to the transfer being put on hold at the last minute. Ouazane, one of Morocco's standout players at the last U17 Africa Cup of Nations, was on the brink of joining the Spanish giants when the move collapsed. While Ajax, his current club, has offered him a spot in the reserves for now, the fresh diagnosis could open new opportunities. Other European clubs are reportedly monitoring the situation. If Madrid is satisfied with the Dutch report, negotiations could resume. If not, Ouazane is unlikely to be short of offers. Tags: Abdellah OuazaneAjax AmsterdamReal Madrid

Measles : Dutch health officials sound alarm over low vaccination rates among Moroccan families
The Dutch National Institute for Public Health (RIVM) has raised the alarm over declining vaccination rates among Moroccan parents living in the Netherlands, contributing to a concerning rise in measles cases. In a recent report, RIVM stated that since 2013, vaccination coverage among children of Moroccan background has dropped significantly, from 95% to 65%. A similar trend has been observed among Turkish parents in the Netherlands, with coverage among children of Turkish background falling from 96% to 79%. This decline has resulted in more than 100 hospitalizations, mostly involving unvaccinated children, and a total of 437 confirmed measles cases so far this year, more than double last year's figure of 204. Experts stress that a vaccination rate above 95% is necessary to prevent outbreaks. The trend is especially pronounced in urban areas with large Moroccan and Turkish populations, such as The Hague, where some neighborhoods report coverage as low as 60%. According to Hilbert Bredemeijer, The Hague's Alderman for Education, Youth, Sports, and Services, growing distrust in government, misinformation, language barriers, and peer pressure are key factors driving vaccine hesitancy. Moroccan families are of particular concern, as Morocco itself has seen a sharp rise in measles cases, prompting a national vaccination campaign. The country has reported 20,000 cases over the past year and a half. In the Netherlands, many measles cases have been linked to infections imported from Morocco.
