Udaipur Files paints all Muslims as terror sympathisers: Fresh plea in top court

India Today24-07-2025
Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind President Maulana Arshad Madani has filed a petition challenging the Centre's approval of the film Udaipur Files with six cuts, arguing that the movie portrays all Indian Muslims as terror sympathisers. The film, titled Udaipur Files: Kanhaiya Lal Tailor Murder, is based on the 2022 killing of a tailor and has been mired in controversy and legal disputes.Madani and others contend that the film unfairly vilifies the Muslim community, presents it in a negative light, and has the potential to incite violence and communal tensions.advertisement
'These narratives and portrayals, it is submitted, do not simply refer to an India-Pakistan issue but rather seek to show Indian Muslims as being either sympathetic towards, or acting at the behest of, terrorists in Pakistan,' the plea filed in the Supreme Court said.Madani contends that the producer has a history of spreading communal and political hatred, and argues that the case should not be viewed as one involving a genuine filmmaker concerned with artistic freedom..'The insinuation is not only mala fide but is aimed at promoting such views so as to cause communal disharmony in India,' the complaint said. The petition also requested that a private screening of the film be organised exclusively for the Supreme Court to enable a complete and fair adjudication of the matter. It urged that the film's public release be halted while the present proceedings are pending. On July 10, the Delhi High Court had stayed the release of the film based on a petition filed by Arshad Madani, directing that the Centre decide on his representation within a week. The Supreme Court subsequently directed the Centre's review panel to make a decision without delay after hearing all parties involved, and also ordered that the accused in the murder case be granted a hearing. On July 21, the Centre informed the Supreme Court that it had recommended six cuts to the film before allowing its release.Madani, however, challenged the Centre's clearance, arguing that the decision lacked proper reasoning.'The Ministry's order is without any reason and fails to deal with the objections raised by Respondent No. 1 (Madani) while only approving the report of the committee constituted by it,' he added.Udaipur-based tailor Kanhaiya Lal was murdered in June 2022 allegedly by Mohammad Riyaz and Mohammad Ghous. The assailants later released a video claiming that the murder was in reaction to the tailor allegedly sharing a social media post in support of former BJP member Nupur Sharma following her controversial comments on Prophet Mohammed. The case was probed by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and the accused were booked under the stringent Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, besides provisions under IPC.The trial is pending before the special NIA court in Jaipur.- EndsMust Watch

Internal quota: Parameshwara appeals to groups to not protest

Home Minister G. Parameshwara here on Sunday said that the Congress government was committed to implementing internal reservation for Scheduled Caste communities in the State and appealed to those threatening to stage protest seeking implementation of it to not do so. 'We had made the declaration on internal reservation in Chitradurga and we have also committed to it in our manifesto. Whatever we need to do should be done according to the procedure and guidelines issued by the Supreme Court. We are committed to implementing internal reservation; procedures have to be followed for which we need some time,' he told presspersons. His statement comes in the light of Dalit left (Madigas) groups threatening a protest from August 11. Dalit left leaders from the BJP, including Govind Karjol and A. Narayanaswamy, have also made such a threat. The Minister said that the commission, headed by retired judge H.N. Nagamohan Das, would submit its report to the government on August 4. It would discussed in the State Cabinet and steps would be taken to implement the recommendations. The A.J. Sadashiva Commission report was not accepted by the then BJP government because of data issues. On the meeting of Ministers from the Scheduled Caste community that he had convened, Dr. Parameshwara said that it was decided to have a common voice on the internal reservation. 'If there are any issues with communities, it was decided to talk to them.'

Bihar SIR: Gopalganj sees largest dip in voters at over 15%, Seemanchal's Kishanganj & Purnia follow

According to the EC data, the draft electoral rolls based on the SIR exercise does not include over 65.6 lakh voters from 38 districts in Bihar. Out of this total dip of 65.6 lakh voters—the EC explained—more than 22 lakh had died, over 36 lakh have permanently shifted or were untraceable, and another seven lakh voters have enrolled as electors in multiple places. New Delhi: Gopalganj, Kishanganj and Purnia in Bihar saw the highest percentage of voter deletion in the draft rolls released by the Election Commission (EC) pursuant to its Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise. Data pertaining to the exercise shows that while Gopalganj saw a 15.01 percent dip in voters as compared to the numbers that it had on 24 June before the exercise began, Purnia saw a 12.08 percent deletion whereas it was 11.82 percent in Kishanganj. These are followed by Madhubani (10.44 percent) and Bhagalpur (10.19 percent). Two of these five districts with the highest percentage of voter deletions come under the Seemanchal region, which has the highest percentage of Muslim population in the eastern state. Among Bihar's districts, Kishanganj has the highest Muslim population (68 percent), and Purnia has about 38 percent Muslim population according to the 2001 Census. The Seemanchal region encompasses four districts of Araria, Kishanganj, Purnia and Katihar. Also referred to as the Kosi-Seemanchal area, it includes Saharsa, Supaul, and Madhepura along with the aforementioned 4 districts. A district-wise breakdown of the draft electoral roll revision, seen by ThePrint, shows that voters have been deleted at an average of 8.06percent per district. Out of these 7 districts, four—Kishanganj, Purnia, Katihar (8.27 percent) and Saharsa (9.46 percent)—saw deletions above the average percentage of deletions. The remaining three saw deletions below average: Araria (7.59 percent), Supaul (7.81 percent) and Madhepura (6.85 percent). While Patna district saw the highest dip with 3.95 lakh voters not included in the electoral draft roll, its percentage dip remained below average at 7.84 percent. The EC has clarified that claims, objections can be filed between 1 August and 1 September to add the name of any eligible elector, or to delete the name of any ineligible elector. 'All eligible electors are appealed to check their names in the draft list, and if their name does not exist in the list, they should fill and submit Form 6 along with the Declaration Form…As per SIR orders, NO NAME CAN BE DELETED from the draft Electoral Roll, by the concerned ERO/AERO without giving a hearing to the elector and subsequently passing a written order, which is appealable to the DM and the CEO,' it said in a press note on 1 August. The electoral roll exercise is under challenge before the Supreme Court, with pleas filed by several petitioners including Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra, Bharat Jodo Abhiyan national convener Yogendra Yadav, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MP Manoj Jha, and non-profit organisations Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and People's Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL). The petitioners have alleged that the exercise is arbitrary, and have also questioned the timeline as well as the timing of the exercise, with the Bihar elections set to take place later this year. This, they contend, can lead to removal of lakhs of genuine voters, leading to their disenfranchisement. (Edited by Tony Rai) Also Read: What an idea, SIRji! Karnataka: Conspiracy To Transfer Muslim Headmaster? 3 Arrested For Poisoning Drinking Water Of School Children

In a shocking revelation, it has emerged that a water tank at a government school in Hulikatti village, Savadatti taluk, Belagavi district, Karnataka, was deliberately poisoned in an attempt to have a Muslim headmaster transferred. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah confirmed that three individuals, including Sagar Patil, the taluk president of the Shriram Sena, have been arrested for allegedly poisoning the school's drinking water meant for children. In a post on X, the Chief Minister elaborated that the incident occurred around 15 days ago, and several children fell ill, though fortunately, there were no fatalities. "The headmaster of the government school in Hulikatti village, Savadatti taluk, Belagavi district, belongs to the Muslim community. With the malicious intent of having him transferred elsewhere, Sagar Patil, the taluk president of Shriram Sena, along with two others, has been arrested for poisoning the drinking water of school children. In this incident that occurred 15 days ago, several children fell ill, but fortunately, no lives were lost," the post read. CM Siddaramaiah congratulated the police who foiled the plot and showed "full confidence" in the judicial system to deliver appropriate punishment to the culprits who committed the act. "Religious fundamentalism and communal hatred can lead to heinous acts, and this incident, which could have resulted in the massacre of innocent children, is a testament to that. In the land of the Sharanas, who proclaimed, "Compassion is the root of religion," how could such cruelty and hatred arise? Even at this moment, I cannot believe it," he added. "BJP leaders who sow hatred in society in the name of religion to cook their political broth should introspect," the Chief Minister continued. "All forms of fanaticism and fundamentalism are dangerous to human society. To curb hate speeches and communal riots, we have formed a special task force, and we are taking all possible legal measures against such elements. For all our efforts to bear fruit, the public must also raise their voices against such forces, resist them, and file complaints," he emphasised. — Siddaramaiah (@siddaramaiah) August 3, 2025 Huvinakone Village Incident Earlier, the Karnataka Chief Minister, reacting to the incident of water tanks at a government primary school contaminated by miscreants using pesticide, resulting in four children falling ill in Shivamogga district, on Friday, described the episode as an act of terrorism. According to the news agency IANS, the incident was reported from Huvinakone village in Hosanagara taluk of Shivamogga district on Thursday. IANS quoted Siddaramaiah as saying, 'The state government has taken very seriously the incident in which miscreants allegedly mixed pesticide into the drinking water tank of the government primary school. In my view, this heinous act, seemingly intended to cause mass deaths of innocent young children, is no less than a terrorist attack.' 'Thanks to the alertness of the school's cooking staff, a major tragedy was averted. I commend the kitchen staff for their timely intervention,' he added. The Karnataka Chief Minister said that he has instructed the police to conduct a thorough investigation, identify the culprits behind this act, and ensure they are punished with the strictest penalties. A case has been registered, and investigations into the incident are currently in progress. On Thursday, two water tanks at the government school were found to be contaminated, with one tank containing a particularly high level of pesticide. The issue came to light when some students noticed a foul smell while washing their hands with water from the second tank. Sensing something unusual, they alerted the teachers.
