The driver of a car which crashed on Auckland's Southern Motorway early this morning died after falling from the Newmarket flyover after the crash.
Police are now investigating the man's death after the incident in the early hours of this morning.
Superintendent Zane Hooper said the car was first seen driving at speed on the Southern Motorway near Greenlane just before 1am.
Police followed the car, with camera operators also monitoring the vehicle's movements.
The speeding vehicle hit the centre barrier on the Newmarket flyover, before crashing into the left side barrier.
The police unit following the crashed car passed the vehicle as it been obscured by a passing truck, and by the time it got back to the scene, the driver had got out of the car.
A camera operator then saw the man climb over the motorway barrier, where he either fell or dropped to the ground below the overbridge.
Police patrols provided first aid, but the man died at the scene.
"This is a tragic event for all those attending staff and welfare has been put in place for our people," said Hooper.
Police have contacted the family of the dead man, and the IPCA has also been contacted.
Hopper said the Serious Crash Unit examined the scene this morning and a critical incident investigation has begun.
"As part of that investigation, a post-mortem will be carried out with formal identification procedures to be completed."

Gang insignia being sold on Temu not illegal

An edited image of a pair of socks featuring the logo of the Mongrel Mob being sold on Temu. Photo: Screenshot / Temu Police say buying or selling gang insignia is not illegal, as products featuring patches pop up for sale online. RNZ has seen blankets and plaques for sale on the online shopping website Temu, with known gang insignia displayed prominently. The government banned the display of patches in public places last year. RNZ has found products on Temu featuring the logos of the Killer Beez, Mongrel Mob, Black Power and the Headhunters. Several accounts are listed as sellers for the products, but one in particular has sold products from both Black Power and the Mongrel Mob. The origin of the products was listed as Zhejiang, China. Some products appear to be edited, but a person who bought a Black Power shower curtain earlier this month rated it four out of five stars, saying "great, was a gift very liked". Photo: Screenshot / Temu A police spokesperson said, to the best of their knowledge, buying and selling gang insignia was not against the law. RNZ is seeking clarity from the Justice Minister on the legality of selling patches online. Temu has also been approached for comment. The town of Wairoa in Hawke's Bay has already dealt with gang crime earlier this year and Mayor Craig Little said he was surprised to hear of products featuring patches popping up online. Shots were fired at houses in April, associated with Mongrel Mob and Black Power gangs. Little said he did not think gangs would be happy to see their patches sold online. "There's no point buying it, if you can't take it anywhere," Little said. "You'll get it taken off you straight away, and that doesn't matter if it's on your clothing or anything." Little said, while he could not speak on behalf of the gangs, he knew their insignias were their own and not others to use. He said the gang patch ban had made a difference in Wairoa. "I don't think, I know it's better," Little said. "The police have told me the crime rate has gone down and people don't feel intimidated like they used to with patched members walking around. "Overall, I think it's been a success to be quite honest." Sign up for Ngā Pitopito Kōrero , a daily newsletter curated by our editors and delivered straight to your inbox every weekday.

Father of man found dead on Wellington's waterfront says safety balustrades a step in the right direction

New graphics reveal what a $7 million project to put safety balustrades on parts of Wellington's waterfront might look like. Photo: Supplied / Wellington City Council The father of a man who was found decreased on Wellington's waterfront says the council's plans to put up safety balustrades is a step in the right direction. The Environment and Infrastructure Committee will meet on 7 August to discuss installing edge protection on sections of the Kumutoto and Queens Wharf waterfront precincts, an area spanning approximately from the Maritime Police Station to Shed 6, to address safety risks in the high traffic areas. The effort to improve safety follows recommendations made to Wellington City Council after a coronial inquest into the death of Sandy Calkin. The 30-year-old was last seen walking along the waterfront at in the early hours of the morning on 10 July 2021. His body was found a week later . Coroner Katharine Greig found Wellington's waterfront lacked adequate measures to prevent Calkin's death and recommended installing permanent edge protection. His father, Rodger Calkin, said he wanted the balustrades extended to the Te Papa Promenade. "Actually putting full balustrades around Kumutoto and Queen's Wharfs, while that would satisfy the coroner's initial findings into Sandy's death, it doesn't cover areas like Te Papa Promenade." Calkin said it was important safety measures were put in place as soon as possible, to prevent further tragedy. "I just think this is an opportunity for Wellington City Council to start resolving a long-term issue and make sure that other families like my family don't go through the same pain and future that we've all gone through," he said. "It's a situation that can be fixed and it needs to be fixed, it's as simple as that." A public consultation process was expected to be undertaken for the remaining precincts, which would cost an additional $11 million.
