GOF seizes over RM100mil worth of e-waste in raid on illegal factory

BATU GAJAH: The General Operations Force (GOF) Northern Brigade arrested five Myanmar citizens at a factory in the Lahat Industrial Area near here, believed to be involved in unlicensed electronic waste (e-waste) recycling activities, with the total value of the seizure estimated at RM111.4 million.
Ulu Kinta GOF Northern Brigade commander SAC Shahrum Hashim said all five Myanmar nationals, including a woman aged between 25 and 45, were arrested during an operation conducted over five hours, starting at 7pm on Monday.
"Intelligence revealed that the factory had been processing e-waste, plastics, metals, and aluminium for approximately a year. Inspections confirmed that the facility was operating without any approval from the Department of Environment," he said.
"We are still in the process of gathering more information regarding the owner of the factory," he said at a press conference yesterday.
Shahrum added that inspections also revealed the factory had employed foreign workers without valid documentation.
The case is currently being investigated under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, as well as Sections 34A and 34B of the Environmental Quality Act 1974.

GOF busts RM190m e-waste syndicate in Johor raid

SEGAMAT: The General Operations Force (GOF) has dismantled a large-scale electronic waste (e-waste) processing syndicate following a raid in Buloh Kasap, Johor, with seizures valued at RM190 million. The operation, conducted jointly with multiple agencies, marks a significant crackdown on illegal e-waste activities in the region. The 5th Battalion of GOF, led by commanding officer Supt Salehin Sulaiman, carried out the raid on June 16 in collaboration with the Department of Environment (DOE), Immigration Department, and Segamat Municipal Council. Authorities discovered that the syndicate had been operating for nearly a year before being uncovered. Dubbed 'Op Hazard 2.0', the operation led to the arrest of 56 individuals, including two Malaysians—a lorry driver and a female clerk working at the premises. The seized items comprised 5,920 tonnes of e-waste, 9.45 tonnes of plastic, 1,031 tonnes of metal, 23 forklifts, 42 machines, and a trailer lorry. The total estimated value of confiscated materials reached RM190,715,900. 'This operation has successfully disrupted a major syndicate network involved in illegal scrap and e-waste processing, particularly in Segamat,' Salehin stated. In a separate operation, the same GOF battalion detained 25 illegal immigrants during a raid at an oil palm plantation in Ladang Tumbuk, Selangor, on April 14. The group, consisting of 16 men and nine women, allegedly entered Malaysia via an unregulated sea route and lacked valid identification documents. All detainees were handed over to Kuala Langat District Police for further action under the Immigration Act. – Bernama

Kuala Lumpur Immigration raids Bukit Bintang restaurant, arrests undocumented workers

KUALA LUMPUR: A restaurant owned by a Bangladeshi national in Bukit Bintang was raided for employing undocumented migrant workers. Three Bangladeshi men working at the premises were arrested in the operation conducted last night by enforcement officers from the Kuala Lumpur Immigration Department. A local worker interviewed at the scene admitted that the premises belonged to his brother-in-law, a Bangladeshi man in his 50s. "He has owned the restaurant for about 10 months," the 25-year-old man said. "I just started working here as a cashier. Before this, I was living and doing odd jobs in Kedah. "There are around 10 workers here, both locals and foreigners. The foreign workers are handled by him (my brother-in-law), probably among his acquaintances. I'm not sure," he added. A check at the location revealed that the restaurant served Bangladeshi cuisine, and most of its customers were also Bangladeshi nationals. It was learnt that the restaurant owner also operates a hotel located above the restaurant. Kuala Lumpur Immigration director Wan Mohammed Saupee Wan Yusoff said the raid was carried out following public complaints regarding undocumented workers. "During the operation, 20 foreign individuals were inspected at the premises, and three undocumented foreigners were arrested on suspicion of not having valid work permits. "The team also checked 11 foreigners in the surrounding area and detained seven more for allegedly not possessing valid travel documents," he said when contacted. According to Wan Mohammed Saupee, the Kuala Lumpur Immigration Department also conducted two other separate raids in Setapak and Cheras on the same night. In Cheras, six individuals were inspected, and three who had overstayed were detained during a raid on a terrace house owned by a local. "The next raid involved a condominium in Setapak where four undocumented foreigners were detained. "In total, 17 foreigners were detained during last night's operations. All of them are being held under Section 6(1)(c) and Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, as well as Regulation 39(b) of the Immigration Regulations 1963," he said.
