Sultan Ibrahim appoints Wan Ahmad Farid as Malaysia's 17th Chief Justice in ceremony at Istana Negara
Wan Ahmad Farid, 62, also took the oath of office and loyalty during the ceremony, which was held at the Small Throne Room of the palace.
Wan Ahmad Farid, hitherto a Court of Appeal judge, was also presented with the instrument of appointment as a Federal Court Judge.
The ceremony was also attended by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Deputy Prime Ministers Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof and Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said.
His Majesty also presented instruments of appointment to Datuk Abu Bakar Jais as the President of the Court of Appeal and Datuk Azizah Nawawi as the Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak, followed by the appointment of eight Court of Appeal Judges and 14 High Court Judges.
Wan Ahmad Farid has been appointed as the 17th Chief Justice of Malaysia, succeeding Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat, who retired on July 2.
The appointment was made in line with Clause (1) of Article 122B of the Federal Constitution, with His Majesty's consent on the advice of the Prime Minister and after consultation with the Conference of Rulers.
Abu Bakar, 63, meanwhile, is filling the vacancy of President of the Court of Appeal following the retirement of Tan Sri Abang Iskandar Abang Hashim on July 3, while Azizah, 63, replaces Tan Sri Abdul Rahman Sebli, who retired on July 24.
Wan Ahmad Farid, who holds a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B Hons) from the University of West London and obtained a Certificate in Legal Practice (Hons) from Universiti Malaya in 1986, began his legal career as an advocate and solicitor with Messrs Adnan & Wee in Kuala Terengganu, serving from 1987 to 2003.
Beyond his legal career, Wan Ahmad Farid has been active in public administration and politics, having served as political secretary to former Prime Minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi from 2003 to 2008, before being appointed Deputy Home Minister from 2008 to 2009.
He returned to legal practice between 2011 and 2015 as a partner at Messrs Wan Farid & Surin in Kuala Lumpur before being appointed as a Judicial Commissioner, serving in the High Courts of Shah Alam, Kuala Lumpur and Kota Bharu from 2015 to 2019.
He was then elevated to High Court Judge from 2019 to 2024, with postings in Kota Bharu, Shah Alam (Special Powers Division) and Kuala Lumpur (Special Powers Division 3). — Bernama

Malaysia, Philippines to strengthen strategic cooperation for Asean's future, says Anwar
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia and the Philippines are committed to strengthening strategic cooperation to ensure a more peaceful and united future for Asean, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. In a Facebook post, Anwar said the commitment was among the matters discussed during a phone conversation with Philippine President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr on Wednesday (Aug 6). "The discussion also touched on peace and harmony in international waters and border areas, which are our shared priorities for regional stability," he said. Anwar said he also shared positive developments regarding the border negotiations between Thailand and Cambodia, which are expected to be finalised this Thursday through the consensus of the two countries' defence ministers during the Extraordinary General Border Committee (GBC) meeting here. The Prime Minister said the development marked another step forward in realising Asean's aspirations of becoming a peaceful, stable and prosperous region. Cambodian Defence Minister General Tea Seiha and acting Thai Defence Minister General Natthaphon Narkphanit, along with armed forces chiefs and government representatives of both countries, are expected to attend the GBC meeting. Thailand and Cambodia had agreed to implement a ceasefire effective midnight on July 28 following a special meeting chaired by Anwar at the Seri Perdana Complex in Putrajaya. – Bernama

Sultan Ibrahim arrives in Russia for maiden state visit
MOSCOW: His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, arrived here today for a six-day state visit to Russia. The special aircraft carrying His Majesty touched down at the Vnukovo2 International Airport at 2.20pm local time (7.20pm Malaysia). Sultan Ibrahim was received upon arrival by Russian Science and Higher Education Minister Valery Falkov and Russian Foreign Ministry State Protocol Department acting director Georgiy Kuznetsov. Present to welcome His Majesty at the airport were Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Pankin and Russian ambassador to Malaysia Nayl Latypov. Also present were Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, as the minister-in-attendance, Foreign Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Amran Mohamed Zin and Malaysian ambassador to Russia Datuk Cheong Loon Lai. The national anthems of both nations were played and His Majesty then walked past a guard of honour, accompanied by Falkov and Kuznetsov, before being greeted by dignitaries from both Malaysia and Russia. After observing the ceremonial march-out of the guard of honour, which signified the conclusion of the ceremony, Sultan Ibrahim departed for his hotel in Moscow. At the hotel, His Majesty was greeted by the home-based staff of the Malaysian embassy and their family members as well as 30 Malaysian students. During the visit, Sultan Ibrahim will be accorded a state welcome ceremony at the Kremlin before holding an official meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin and attending a state banquet hosted by the president. His Majesty will also visit the Central Scientific Research Automobile and Automotive Engines Institute (NAMI) as well as the Tochka Kipeniya Technology and Innovation Hub. After concluding his programme in Moscow, His Majesty will travel to Kazan in the Republic of Tatarstan for the second segment of the state visit. Sultan Ibrahim, who ascended the federal throne on Jan 31, 2024, is making his maiden state visit to Russia at the invitation of Putin. This visit has been described as historic as it is the first state visit by a Malaysian Head of State to Russia since diplomatic relations were established in 1967. This is the fourth state visit conducted by Sultan Ibrahim after Singapore, China and Brunei.
