Key tourism strategy yields results with Eid visitor boom

Daily Tribune12-06-2025

Enhanced cooperation with the private sector has contributed to achieving the objectives of the Tourism Sector Strategy (2022–2026), resulting in increased visitor numbers to the Kingdom of Bahrain and higher hotel occupancy rates during the Eid Al Adha holiday.
This was affirmed by Her Excellency Fatima bint Jaafar Al Sairafi, Minister of Tourism.
She noted that promotional efforts focused on launching innovative packages targeting Gulf families, in collaboration with Gulf Air, Bahrain's national carrier, as well as hotels, resorts, and travel agents.
Key target markets
The Gulf countries are among the five key target markets identified in the tourism strategy, which has been clearly reflected in the positive performance indicators.
Al Sairafi said that the current momentum in Bahrain's tourism sector highlights the development of tourism infrastructure and the diversity of services, supported by advanced facilities that meet visitors' expectations. She also emphasised the variety of tourism experiences available, including events, theatrical performances, and a wide range of entertainment activities catering to different preferences.
The Minister underscored the importance of continued collaboration between the public and private sectors to support the growth of this promising sector.
National priority
Al Sairafi added that the Kingdom places increasing importance on the tourism sector as a national priority, which requires launching innovative initiatives and implementing projects that enhance Bahrain's cultural and civilisational values, further strengthening its tourism position regionally and internationally.
She confirmed that current indicators reflect rapid progress toward achieving the strategy's goals, including increasing the tourism sector's contribution to GDP and reinforcing Bahrain's status as a sustainable tourism destination in the region.
This is being accomplished by expanding entertainment, hospitality, and retail options, offering integrated travel and accommodation packages, and advancing a sustainable tourism ecosystem.

Multi-route mobilisation The repatriation effort used a blend of nine Gulf Air aircraft and 37 overland buses to reach citizens stranded in countries affected by the recent closure of airspace due to regional tensions. Alongside Iran, repatriations were carried out from Iraq, Jordan, Russia, Azerbaijan, and Armenia. In one of the most logistically com- plex stages of the operation, citizens in Iran were flown to Turkmenistan, from where Bahraini diplomatic teams coordinated with local authorities to finalise onward travel. Similar arrangements were made through border crossings in Iraq, where buses carried returning citizens from transit points.

Bahrain Successfully Completes Return of Stranded Citizens from Affected Countries

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced the successful return of all Bahraini citizens who were stranded abroad and had requested to come back home from countries affected by the current regional situation. This was made possible after the full or partial reopening of airspace in those nations. The repatriation efforts were carried out in line with the royal directives of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and under the instructions of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister. The final two repatriation flights, operated by Gulf Air, Bahrain's national carrier, arrived from Turkmenistan carrying 203 citizens who had previously been in the Islamic Republic of Iran. In addition, the ministry confirmed the return of 103 other citizens from various countries where airspace had been temporarily closed due to the ongoing situation. In total, 2,586 Bahraini citizens were brought back from Iran through coordinated efforts involving nine Gulf Air flights and 37 buses operating by land routes. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs extended its gratitude to the diplomatic missions of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, as well as to the governments of Iraq and Turkmenistan, for their support in easing travel and border procedures, and for helping Bahraini citizens return safely.

360 Bahrainis arrive from Turkmenistan

Two Gulf Air aircraft arrived in the Kingdom of Bahrain from Turkmenistan, carrying 360 Bahraini citizens who had been repatriated from the Islamic Republic of Iran. The operation was carried out in line with the directives of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, and under the supervision of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister. Upon arrival at Bahrain International Airport, the returnees were welcomed by officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Health, and Bahrain Airport Services. All necessary procedures were in place, including health screenings, to ensure their safety and well-being. The Kingdom's embassies in the State of Kuwait and the Republic of Iraq coordinated the return of an additional 275 citizens who travelled by land. Buses transported them from the Iranian city of Mashhad through the Al Abdali border crossing between Kuwait and Iraq, and the Al Shalamcheh border crossing between Iran and Iraq, as part of broader efforts by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to facilitate the safe return of Bahraini nationals.
