Celebration to commemorate WWII at Armed Forces Day
Lydiard Park will welcome people on Saturday, June 28, to appreciate the efforts of the armed forces community and mark the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.
The free event is being hosted by Swindon Borough Council, with support from local armed forces organisations, and takes place at the end of a week of national tribute starting on Monday, June 23.
Running from 11am to 4pm, Swindon's Armed Forces Day will be filled with entertainment for all ages, featuring community stalls, a funfair, dynamic dance troupe performances, and a mini concert.

The Armed Forces Day flag will be raised outside the Civic Offices in Euclid Street at 11am on Monday, June 24, marking the start of the national celebrations across the UK and members of the public are welcome to attend to show their support.
Serving armed forces personnel, veterans, and service families from around the UK will come together in Lydiard Park for the day.
The day is also a highly anticipated opportunity for communities to say 'thank you' to armed forces personnel past, present, and future.
The service will feature a cadet parade, gun salute, a C-130 flypast, and live music.

Keswick Mountain Rescue Team help siblings stuck on Blencathra
KESWICK Mountain Rescue Team rescued two siblings who were stuck on Sharp Edge. The team were called out at 2:33 pm on Tuesday, July 1, to two people who were unable to descend from their position on Blencathra. In total, 19 Mountain Rescue Team members helped with the rescue. One vehicle with team members was deployed, and they were assisted by seven members of the Royal Air Force (RAF) Mountain Rescue Team Lossiemouth who were training in Keswick. Keswick MRT said: 'A safety line was rigged across the ridge and three team members assisted the crag fast brother and sister across to safety. 'They were then walked off to their car at Scales.' The rescue included 12 Keswick Mountain Rescue team members and 7 RAF Mountain Rescue Lossiemouth team members. It took 3 hours and 47 minutes.

Fox cub found choking to death in football net
A baby fox was found to be slowly choking to death after it got tangled up in a football net. It became trapped at a school in Basildon, Essex, and was unable to breathe properly or escape, said South Essex Wildlife Hospital. Lead vet Tom Linsel was called to the scene last week and managed to cut it free just in time. Following treatment, it was released back to its mother in the wild. Tributes to school head who had 'huge personality'
A family has paid tribute to a former head teacher, describing him as a man who was "charismatic and generous" with a "huge personality". Ahmad Khan, who was the former head of Charnwood Primary School, in the Highfields area, died on Monday at the age of 84. From the mid-70s he taught at Newry Junior School in Leicester, before he moved to Charnwood Primary School in 1988, where he retired. Suleman Nagdi, a community advocate in the city, said it was an "honour and privilege" to know Mr Khan for almost 50 years, both personally and professionally. Mr Khan's family said he dedicated his career to education from the age of 18, teaching in Nairobi, Kenya. From the mid-70s he taught at Newry Junior School in Leicester, before he moved to Charnwood Primary School in 1988, where he retired. In 1998, Mr Khan received an MBE for services to education at the birthday honours. The grandfather and father-of-two was also the founding member and chairman of the Federation of Muslim Organisations in Leicester. His daughter Munazza Khan said her father, who was one of 14 siblings, was a "family man and loved his heritage". "He was fun loving," she said. "Everyone has a funny story to tell about him. "He loved gardening and was a great cook. His door was always open to anyone. "His leadership, fairness and energy drove him to make a difference to so many communities. "People saw him as a father figure, but we were lucky enough to have him as our dad." Mr Nagdi added Mr Khan's passing represents an "incalculable loss" to the Muslim community. "His students and all who knew him will experience a deep personal loss," he said. "Ahmad helped shape young minds as a head teacher. Each student will have a story, and I'm sure they will remember the education he parted with them. "Beyond his role in education, he was a pillar of the local Muslim community. "Renowned for his integrity and strong character. His strength will be deeply cherished. "Ahmad continued to offer invaluable counsel even after his retirement and leaves a legacy behind."
