West indies take honors on 1st day of day-night 3rd test against australia

Al Arabiya3 days ago
The West Indies produced another dominant day with the ball against a fragile Australia batting lineup and then survived a tense final hour Saturday to take the honors after the first day of the day-night third test. Shamar Joseph took four wickets with Justin Greaves and Jayden Seales taking three apiece as the West Indies pace attack took full advantage of the seam and pitch conditions once the lights were turned on at Sabina Park to bowl Australia out for 225. The hosts then survived an evening onslaught from 100-test veteran Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins for just the loss of Kevlon Anderson to Starc to be 12-1 at the close. Earlier 19-year-old Sam Konstas tough tour continued as he was the only wicket to fall in the opening session after Australia had won the toss and elected to bat. Konstas labored to 17 from 53 balls before he was snared lbw by Greaves (3-56). Usman Khawaja didn't fare much better as he fell for a scratchy 23 from 92 balls until he was spectacularly caught behind by Shai Hope to give Shamar Joseph (4-33) his first wicket of the day. Cameron Green (46) and Steven Smith (48) steadied the ship for the Baggy Greens with a 61-run partnership but both were dismissed in quick order just before milestones. Unlike the first two tests in Barbados and Grenada Australia's middle order didn't fire with Head (20) Webster (one) and Carey (21) all falling cheaply as the lights were turned and the ball began hooping and swinging about. Seales (3-59) then returned to pick up Cummins (24) who holed-out in the deep looking for his third six in the over and Starc went for a duck in his milestone 100th test. Shamar Joseph got a deserved fourth wicket when he had Josh Hazlewood caught to wrap up yet another unconvincing Australian batting display.
'Every pitch has been tough,' Green said after play. 'It was a real grind. Usman batted well and never looked in. Steve Smith looked like he batted on a different pitch again. We wanted to give them a tricky 45 minutes at the end and I thought they batted beautifully.' King and Anderson had the unenviable task of opening the batting for the hosts under lights with Mikyle Louis and John Campbell both unavailable to bat after taking blows in the field during Australia's first innings. After Starc who relishes bowling with the pink ball didn't have to wait long to get his 396th test wicket when he found the stumps between the gap of Anderson's (3) bat and pad. But captain Chase and King dug in grimly and survived a number of close calls to see the hosts through to stumps and take the honors after the first day.
Veterans dropped Australia spinner Nathan Lyon was dropped for the first time in 12 years as the tourists opted for an all-pace attack with the pink ball at Sabina Park. Scott Boland was brought in beside usual attack trio of Cummins Starc and Hazlewood. The West Indies on the other hand broke up its all-pace attack from Grenada by recalling left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican at the expense of quick Anderson Phillip. Also opening batter Kraigg Brathwaite was dropped following his 100th test in Grenada after scores in the series of 4 4 0 7. He was replaced by Louis while Guyana's Anderson debuted at No. 3 in the order after displacing Keacy Carty.
Starc's 100th milestone Starc is playing his 100th test–the 16th Australian to the landmark. After taking Anderson's wickets under lights at Sabina Park he's now just four wickets away from a career 400. Australia's bowlers have dominated the series after winning the first two tests–by 159 runs in Barbados then by 133 runs in Grenada–to secure the Frank Worrell Trophy.

Starc Takes 6 Wickets For 9 Runs As West Indies Routed For 27 In Kingston

KINGSTON, Jamaica – Mitchell Starc took six wickets for nine runs, surpassing 400 test wickets in his 100th test, and Scott Boland claimed a hat trick as Australia bowled out the West Indies for 27 to win the third test by 176 runs on Monday. The West Indies missed the lowest score in test cricket by one run. Starc's first 15 balls delivered the fastest five-wicket haul in test history and his 15th five-wicket bag in tests. The tall left-armer took a wicket with the first ball and three wickets in the first over of the West Indies innings at Sabina Park. Australia took only 14.3 overs to rout the home side in the first day-night test in Kingston and complete a 3-0 series sweep. While Starc missed a hat trick after dismissing Kevlon Anderson and Brandon King with consecutive deliveries, Boland completed his with the wickets of Justin Greaves, Shamar Joseph, and Jomel Warrican. It was the 10th test hat trick by an Australian. Boland finished with three wickets for two runs. The West Indies was out for its lowest test score, eclipsing the 47 against England on the same ground in 2004. At 11-6 in the sixth over, it was in danger of inheriting the lowest score in test history. A misfield by Sam Konstas in the 14th over allowed the West Indies to take a single and reach 27, just avoiding New Zealand's 70-year-old record of 26 set against England. Earlier, Alzarri Joseph took 5-27 as the West Indies bowled out Australia for 121 in its second innings, leaving a chase of 204 runs for victory. Australia began the third day at 99-6 but lasted only eight more overs. Cameron Green, who battled hard on Day 2 to reach 42, was out to the first ball of the day, and the rest of the Australia tail followed quickly. When West Indies replied, Starc produced an outstanding display of fast bowling on a responsive pitch. He had opener John Campbell caught by substitute wicketkeeper Josh Inglis with his first ball of the second innings, compelling Campbell to play defensive at a ball which moved away. Inglis kept in place of Alex Carey, who was struck on the helmet by Alzarri Joseph on the second day. Starc then removed Anderson lbw, bowled King without scoring, and Mikyle Lewis for 4, leaving the West Indies four wickets down for five runs. His fifth wicket was Shai Hope, trapped lbw by a ball that swung in at pace to hit the back pad. When Josh Hazlewood dismissed captain Roston Chase, caught by Inglis without scoring, the West Indies was 11-6. Taking out extras, the top six West Indies batters collectively scored only six runs. The West Indies was 22-6 at the dinner break. Shortly after, it passed 26, helped by two dropped catches in the slips by Sam Konstas off Starc. Boland's hat trick brought the end closer, and Starc's sixth wicket finished the match inside three days.

Jofra Archer's triumphant return helps England defeat India at Lord's

It was July 14. Of course, Jofra Archer was going to open the bowling for England against India on the final day of the Lords test on Monday. 'Yeah, part of the reason I went with Jof this morning…six years ago now to the day,' England captain Ben Stokes said. On July 14, 2019, Archer helped England win its first Cricket World Cup trophy in the most dramatic final against New Zealand, also at Lords. 'He played a major role,' Stokes said, 'and I had a feeling he'd do something special (on Monday) and crack the game open.' In the fourth over of the day, Archer sent Rishabh Pant's off stump cartwheeling. Then in the day's eighth over, he got Washington Sundar with a fantastic one-hand caught-and-bowled. Archer and Stokes combined to take 3-11 in the first 40 minutes and hastened India's demise from 58-4 overnight to 82-7. India, chasing 193, was eventually dismissed for 170, and England won by 22 runs to take a 2-1 lead in the five-match series. Archer's first test in 4 1/2 years produced an impressive match haul of five wickets. 'I had a gut feeling that Jof's going to do something in his first game back,' Stokes said. 'Every time he's announced on the tannoy, the ground erupts, and when the speeds go up on the screen the feeling changes.' Archer regularly worried India by bowling at speeds of up to 90 mph (145 kph). But he was managed by Stokes, never doing more than five-over spells and spaced well apart. It frustrated Archer, but he also understood after years of being sidelined by elbow and back injuries. 'It was pretty hectic for the first game back,' he told broadcaster Sky Sports. 'I probably bowled a few more overs than I thought I would've (39.2 in the match) but every single one mattered today so I'm not too fussed about it. Only played one test at Lords (on debut in 2019) and that one was just as special as this one. It's been a long time coming, a lot of rehab, a lot of training. But moments like this make it worth it. Managing the workload is still very hard, being told you can bowl some days and not others.' Archer never thought he would not return to test cricket. His previous test was in February 2021 in Ahmedabad, and his previous home test was in August 2020. 'I'm not totally out of the woods yet, but it's a good start,' he said. 'The style of cricket that this team plays, it means I'm going to bowl a lot of overs!' Archer didn't hold back either when he verbally sprayed Pant and Sundar after dismissing them. It was all part of the passions brought on by earlier incidents between the teams. 'We came together as a group yesterday and said you know, sometimes we're too nice. We go to other places and some teams are not as nice to us as we are to them so I guess we just tried to shift it. I don't know if it gave us a bit more of a buzz in the field or not, but we will keep it in the bank for the future!' 'It wasn't a proud moment (to Pant). I just told him to cherish that moment. He came down the track and that annoyed me a little bit so when the ball nipped down the slope (and bowled him) I was so grateful.'
