
Nearly half of Pasadena Unified schools have contaminated soil, district finds
Over 40% of the schools had lead at levels exceeding the state's health-based limits for residential soil, and over 20% had arsenic levels beyond what L.A. County considers acceptable, according to the results released Wednesday.
The district found lead at over three times the state's allowable limit of 80 milligrams per kilogram of soil next to Blair High School's tennis courts and over double the limit at four elementary schools. Lead, when inhaled through dust or ingested from dirt-covered hands, can cause permanent brain and nerve damage in children, resulting in slowed development and behavioral issues.
Arsenic, a known carcinogen, was found at a concentration of 92 milligrams per kilogram of soil at San Rafael Elementary School. The county has used 12 mg/kg as a reference level, based on an estimate of the highest naturally occurring arsenic levels in all of Southern California. The naturally occurring background level of arsenic in Altadena and Pasadena ranges from 4 to 10 mg/kg, according to a 2019 study by the U.S. Geological Survey.
There is no safe exposure level for arsenic or lead.
'I'm worried about her safety,' said Nicole Maccalla of her daughter, a sixth-grader at Octavia E. Butler Magnet, which is located less than a mile from the Eaton fire burn area. 'I would really like to have assurances that she's physically safe while she's at school.'
Instead, what she got was a map of the school posted by the district showing lead levels 40% and 70% above the allowable limit in soil samples taken next to the school entrance and near the outdoor lunch tables, respectively.
'If, literally, you've got to walk by lead to walk up the steps to school, then how many kids are walking through that with their shoes and then walking into the classroom?' Maccalla said. 'It's not like these are inaccessible areas that are gated off.'
Maccalla made the hard decision to let her daughter return to school in January despite early fears — worrying that the trauma of moving schools directly after the fire would be too much.
Along with other concerned parents, Maccalla has been pushing for both soil and indoor testing for months at school board meetings. It was only after the L.A. County Department of Public Health announced in April that it had found 80% of properties had lead levels exceeding the state's standards in some areas downwind that the district hired the environmental firm Verdantas to conduct testing at schools.
'The school board has been very resistant to any request for testing from parents,' she said. 'The superintendent kept saying it's safe.' The parents' response: 'Prove it.'
The district released test results for 33 properties it owns — some with district schools and children's centers, others with charter and private schools, some rented to nonprofits — that were all largely unscathed by the fires. On the 22 properties with public schools, students have been back in the classroom since late January. The full results with maps for each school can be seen on the school district's website.
The district stated on its website there was 'no indication that students or staff were exposed to hazardous levels of fire-related substances in the soil,' noting that any contamination found was highly localized. (For example, while seven samples at Blair High School identified elevated lead levels, 21 samples did not.)
Health agencies also advised the district that soil covered with grass or cement was unlikely to pose a health risk.
In response to the results, the district stated it would restrict access to contaminated areas, complete follow-up sampling and work on remediation over the summer. No classroom instruction will be affected.
'We want to be abundantly clear: Safety is not negotiable,' Pasadena Unified School District Supt. Elizabeth Blanco said in a press release. 'That's why we're moving forward with both urgency and care.'
For Maccalla, it's too little too late. 'I would like to know what their plan is for monitoring the health of the children, given you've got kids that have already been playing outside in that soil for four months straight,' she said. 'So what's their health crisis mitigation plan?'
The test results also found high levels of chromium — which, in some chemical configurations, is a carcinogen — on one campus. Another had high levels of a class of contaminants called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, which can cause headaches, coughing, skin irritation and, over long periods of exposure, can come with an increased risk of cancer.
Three of the five properties with the district's children centers also had elevated levels of heavy metals — two with lead, one with arsenic.
When Maccalla — who has spent much of her time after the fire volunteering with the community advocacy group Eaton Fire Residents United — first saw the map of her daughter's school, she began to formulate a plan to rally volunteers to cover the contaminated areas with mulch and compost before school buses arrive again Monday morning. (That is an expert-approved remediation technique for fire-stricken soil.)
'If the district is not going to do it, the state's not going to do it, our county's not going to do it, our city's not going to do it,' she said, 'well, the citizens will. We absolutely will.'

The National Park Service is clearing up any misconceptions on whether wildlife is migrating away from Yellowstone National Park. Videos have been spreading on social media platforms that appear to show a plethora of animals, such as herds of bison, elk, mountain lions and grizzly bears, are leaving the nation's oldest national park in large quantities. In one video posted to TikTok and Instagram, a group of grizzly bears appears to be walking along a road, leaving the reserve. Others show lines of bison and groups of elk doing the same. As a result, the topic has been trending on Google for the past week. However, the NPS believes the videos that are circulating on social media are AI-generated and "satirical in nature," Linda Veress, a spokesperson for the NPS, told ABC News. "Wildlife is not leaving Yellowstone National Park in large numbers," Veress said. "This rumor is false." While there are natural ebbs and flows of wildlife migration within Yellowstone, the majority of movement tends to happen in the winter, Bill Hamilton, a wildlife biologist at Washington and Lee University who has been researching the ecology at Yellowstone for 20 years, told ABC News. Yellowstone is home to hundreds of species of birds, fish and mammals, according to the NPS. It is the only national park in North America where there are no fences to contain the wildlife, and therefore, they are able to roam freely, Hamilton said. "They're free to come and go, and there's a migratory path for elk and bison and deer," Tom Murphy, a wildlife photographer who has been snapping images at Yellowstone for 50 years, told ABC News. The animals leave the park in the winter to get better access to food that is likely covered in snow inside the park, Hamilton said. When the animals that eat plants and grasses leave, the predators follow, he added. The mountain lions follow the deer, and the wolves move with the elk. Wildlife rarely migrates during the summer, unless they are forced out by an extreme event, such as a large wildfire, Hamilton said. This year is a "normal year," with typical weather and moisture, Murphy said. But elk and bison may seek higher ground in search of cooler temperatures and fewer insects, Murphy said. "There's no reason for them to be leaving right now," Murphy said. Some of the social media users hypothesized that the supposed migrations were occurring due to a pending eruption at Yellowstone's supervolcano. The park's complex and extensive volcanic system is thoroughly monitored by the U.S. Geological Survey and the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory. The current alert level for volcanic activity at Yellowstone is "normal" or "Code Green," according to the USGS. "Geologically, it's going to erupt in the next 2 million years, but probably not today," Murphy said. While video of dozens of bison moving together has been recorded in the past, it is usually about 40 bison out of about 4,500 in the park, Hamilton said. In the winter, it's easier for the animals to walk on the road rather than snow-covered ground, Murphy said. "It was a very small percentage of the total herd size," Hamilton said. "Those things get observed, but it's not massive numbers of animals." It is immediately apparent that the video of the group of grizzly bears is fake because bears never get close together in that manner, Hamilton said. Grizzly bears don't congregate unless there's a "heavy, productive" food source around, such as a salmon stream in Alaska or a dead bison carcass at Yellowstone. The video of the mountain lions is also "nonsense," because mountain lions don't migrate, Murphy said. "They have a weekly round with a territory that they travel through, but you're not going to see them in a video of them running down the road," Murphy said. While the misinformation may just be a form of entertainment, it can become concerning if people start to believe it, Hamilton said. "It does undermine the overall perception of understanding how things work, how nature works," Hamilton said.

Magnitude 7.3 earthquake recorded off Alaska coast; tsunami warning issued
A 7.3 magnitude earthquake was recorded off the Alaska Peninsula on Wednesday afternoon, July 16. The U.S. Geological Survey recorded the earthquake off Sand Point, Popof Island, which is located in the center of the Alaska Peninsula, at just after 12:30 p.m. local time. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) issued a tsunami warning for the majority of the Alaska Peninsula, spanning up into the southern-most part of Alaska's mainland toward Anchorage. A major earthquake, capable of causing "serious damage," is considered having a magnitude between 7.0-7.9, according to Michigan Technological University. Only about 10-15 earthquakes of this caliber are reported each year. This is a developing story.

Another hole has formed at Yellowstone National Park, geologists say
More geological changes are occurring at Yellowstone National Park, as another hole forms in one of the park's basins. The hole is a blue water spring, discovered by geologists in April as they conducted routine maintenance of temperature logging stations at Norris Geyser Basin, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The pool, located in the Porcelain Basin sub-basin west of a patch of vegetation known as "Tree Island," was not there during their last visit to the area in the fall, according to the USGS. The water is light blue in color and is about 1 foot deep below the rim. It's geological features indicate it formed as a result of a hydrothermal explosion -- an event caused by pressure changes that result from the transition of liquid water to steam, according to the USGS. The pool measures about 13 feet in diameter and is surrounded by numerous small rocks about 1 foot across. The rocks are covered by light gray, sandy mud. It is "not surprising" that a hydrothermal explosion occurred at the site, as it has happened several times in recent decades, according to the USGS. The North Geyser Basin is the "most dynamic" area in Yellowstone, the agency said. High-resolution satellite imagery indicates that the hole was not present on Dec. 19, but images taken on Jan. 6 show a depression that had formed in the area. By Feb. 13, the pool had been filled with water, the satellite images show. More will hydrothermal explosions will likely be recorded, as a monitoring station installed in 2023 can detect geophysical data indicating an explosion. In April 2024, a "small" explosion at the Porcelain Terrace left a crater measuring several feet across in diameter, according to the USGS. A hole that formed in Yellowstone's Biscuit Basin, near Old Faithful, in July 2024 was also attributed to a hydrothermal explosion, according to the National Park Service. While that hole likely formed in a single major explosive event, the newest thermal feature appears to have formed by multiple small events that initially threw rocks but later threw silica mud a short distance, creating a small pit that became filled with silica-rich water. Geologists estimate that the feature probably started to develop on Dec. 25, with further activity occurring through late January and early February, according to the USGS.
