HKFP's investigative reporting wins a prestigious SOPA award

HKFP3 days ago

A Hong Kong Free Press investigation has won an honourable mention at the prestigious Society of Publishers in Asia (SOPA) awards.
HKFP's 2024 probe into Hong Kong's role in illegal deforestation of the Amazon rainforest was a joint investigation by Mercedes Hutton and Repórter Brasil.
Supply chain data, revealed in the feature, showed that at least four local businesses had imported beef farmed by a man whom Brazilian police had called 'the greatest devastator of the Amazon.'
It won a Carlos Tejada Award for Excellence in Investigative Reporting Honourable Mention. The top prize in the regional category went to a Mekong Eye investigation into meat smuggling.
SOPA said that there were over 700 entries, with 120 volunteer judges asked to pick the top contenders for this year's awards.
Established in 1999, the SOPA Awards recognise editorial excellence in both new media and traditional journalism in the Asia-Pacific region. HKFP has won three prizes in previous years.
The SOPA 2025 Awards Gala Dinner was held on Thursday at the JW Marriott Hotel. Editor at Large for Bloomberg Weekend Mishal Husain, a former BBC World presenter, was the keynote speaker, alongside broadcaster Karen Koh as host.

Citysuper's food court in Times Square closes its doors, as supermarket group cites ‘changes in consumer patterns'

Citysuper's food court in Times Square has closed its doors after almost 30 years in business following 'changes in consumer patterns,' according to the supermarket group. The food court, located at the basement level of Causeway Bay's Times Square mall, saw its last day of operation on Saturday. In an email to HKFP, Citysuper said Amazing Food Hall would be closed from Monday onwards, with the area being returned to the landlord. 'This decision follows changes in consumer patterns and our long-term portfolio strategy,' the email read. 'Parts of our [food and beverage] sections will undergo renovation with seating area, and we aim to reopen in mid-September,' the supermarket group added. Opened in 1996 as part of the high-end Citysuper supermarket, the food court served a variety of international cuisines in addition to local food court staples such as noodles and grilled meats. The Citysuper food court in Times Square was the last one remaining of the brand. In 2021, the food court in Tsim Sha Tsui's Harbour City shopping mall shut at the end of its lease. The supermarket also had food courts in the APM mall in Kwun Tong and PopCorn, a shopping mall in Tseung Kwan O, but they have also since closed. The news follows a string of closures in Hong Kong's food and beverage sector, which has struggled to recover since Covid-19 took a hit on the economy. Last week, leading Hong Kong bakery chain Taipan Bread & Cakes shut down all of its stores, ending 41 years in operation. Earlier this month, catering group King Parrot also closed.

Adrian Cheng resigns as non-executive director

Adrian Cheng resigns as non-executive director New World Development gets HK$88.2 billion refinancing deals. File photo: RTHK Adrian Cheng, a third-generation heir of New World Development, had resigned as a non-executive director and non-executive vice-chairman, the company said in a separate filing to the exchange on Monday. Cheng stepped down as CEO in September, after the company reported its first annual loss in over 20 years. New World, which carries one of the highest debt ratios among its peers, changed its chief executive twice last year. It also announced that it has received commitments for a HK$88.2 billion loan refinancing package, as the property developer finalises a crucial lifeline in a struggling market. The refinancing, poised to be one of the largest ever seen in Hong Kong, concludes months of negotiations over a debt package designed to bring the company back from the brink of default. Giving details of its refinancing plan, New World said it had refinanced portions of its existing offshore unsecured debt, including bank loans, through a new facility and had also aligned the terms of its remaining loan agreements. The new facility consists of multiple tranches of bank loans with different maturities, the earliest being June 30, 2028. The refinancing includes terms, such as financial covenants and security over certain assets, that provide the firm with greater flexibility to effectively manage its ongoing business operations and financial requirements, the company said. "We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the banking community for their continued support. This is a testament to the confidence placed in our operation," said Echo Huang, CEO of New World. She added that the group's financial management strategy is to prioritise reducing debt and improving cash flow. (Reuters)
