Fever's Caitlin Clark ruled out of game vs. Liberty due to groin injury after missing WNBA All-Star festivities

Caitlin Clark's status remains in question as the second half of the WNBA season is set to begin on Tuesday. After the WNBA All-Star festivities in Indiana, Fever coach Stephanie White said that there are no updates on Clark's groin injury. She noted that Clark will meet with doctors on Monday, and she'll travel to Brooklyn with the team for their game against the New York Liberty on Tuesday. Clark, though, was officially ruled out of that contest on Monday afternoon — which is something that White had anticipated. "I don't expect her to be available on Tuesday," White said. "We're just going to continue to take it one day at a time and let her get her evaluations early this week. And once we have that, hopefully, we'll have a clear mind on what that looks like." Clark went down with a groin injury in the Fever's win over the Connecticut Sun on July 15. After helping the team establish a healthy lead, Clark was forced to exit the contest with under a minute to go in the fourth quarter. While the Fever secured an 85-77 win, White shared that Clark "felt a little something in her groin" before she frustratedly left the court. As a result, Clark missed their next game against New York, which the Liberty won 98-77, and she did not participate in the All-Star competitions in front of the Fever's home crowd. Clark was named a 2025 WNBA All-Star captain and committed to play in the 3-point contest. Clark's Indiana teammate, Lexie Hull, replaced her in the 3-point contest, won by New York's Sabrina Ionescu. She was replaced in the All-Star game by Fever teammate Kelsey Mitchell, instead performing coaching duties for Team Clark from the sideline as they fell to Napheesa Collier's team, 151-131. After staying injury-free through her time at Iowa and her first year in the W, Clark has missed 10 games this season due to groin and quad injuries. Earlier this season, Clark missed five games due to a quad injury. After returning from her first groin strain, Clark is now dealing with a similar injury, having played in just 13 of the Fever's 23 games. Clark is averaging 16.5 points and 8.8 assists per game, but she has struggled from beyond the arc, making just 27.5% of her attempts from deep — a career-low dating back to her time at Iowa. Her previous career-low shot percentage from 3 came as a sophomore with the Hawkeyes, where she shot 33.2% from beyond the arc. The Fever are third in the Eastern Conference and sixth in WNBA standings with a 12-11 record. The defending champions have moved to second in the league and first in the East with a 5-6 record. Indiana holds a 1-2 record against New York this season.

Fans call out 'laughable' rule as Origin player tossing up Aussie defect ahead of Ashes

Dolphins fullback Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow is reportedly considering switching allegiances and playing for Samoa in the Pacific Championships this year, which would be a huge blow for incoming coach Kevin Walters ahead of the historic Ashes tour. Tabuai-Fidow was one of the stars of State of Origin Game 3 having filled in at fullback and helped Queensland win the decider in Sydney. Tabuai-Fidow would be close to an automatic selection for incoming coach Walters with the Dolphins star able to play in the centres, fullback and wing for his side. But just like Payne Haas and Tino Fa'asuamaleaui, Tabuai-Fidow is weighing-up whether to play for Samoa going forward, according to . 'The Hammer' played for Samoa in the 2022 World Cup, but was hampered with injury and only featured in one game. He has represented Australia six times since then having won the Pacific Championship last year in a stacked side. Although it appears he is weighing-up whether to go back and represent Samoa, which he is eligible to do through family heritage. And this hands Walters a new issue as incoming coach. The NRL great is expected to be handed the Kangaroos coaching role any day now. Walters appears to have got the job over Cameron Smith and other candidates, which will see him take over his first head coaching role since leaving the Broncos at the end of 2024. Walters will be looking to help lead Australia to victory over England in the first Ashes series since 2003. However, his first job as coach could be to persuade the likes of Tabuai-Fidow, Haas and Fa'asuamaleaui from changing allegiances. Samoa lost 3-0 to England last year in their international series, but boast an extremely strong side. Jarome Luai, Stephen Crichton, Brian To'o, Terrell May and Blaize Talagi already make up the squad in a side that is growing in strength. But Walters would like to keep Tabuai-Fidow in the side who would be in contention to play fullback, or revert to his previous role in the centres, if available for selection. Regardless, Walters is now facing a new task as incoming coach. And the new rule has raised issues. Rugby League fans divided over international rules Samoa is not considered a tier-one nation so if Tabuai-Fidow, Haas and Fa'asuamaleaui were to make the switch, they would still be able to continue playing Origin for their respective states. And fans have become increasingly confused and frustrated with reports of players switching. Many feel the players should only be able to play for one country and not be able to switch after making their debut. However, the argument is State of Origin and the international game is strengthened with as many players getting involved as possible. Samoa will continue to grow in strength and the game will grow if more superstars opt to represent the country. I think the Kangaroos have plenty of quality outside backs to cover 😂Strengthening the other teams will make for a better international competition. — Skrindell (@RansomeNick) July 21, 2025 Anyone can play for anyone It's laughable — Ryan D (@ryand1one) July 21, 2025 Seriously players just pick a choose what they want to do these days. It's a joke — steven goodall (@goodsey81) July 21, 2025 Kevin Walters set to be named as Australia coach The Kangaroos are yet to officially name a coach, despite Walters close to being confirmed for the role. The Kangaroos will play a three-match Ashes series for the first time since 2003, with the first Test against England getting underway at London's Wembley Stadium on October 25. NRL legend Brad Fittler was considered a favourite for the role, but withdrew from the race due to his media commitments with Channel Nine. The ARLC has been on the lookout for someone to replace Mal Meninga as Kangaroos coach, since the World Cup-winning mentor stepped down to join expansion side the Perth Bears, who enter the NRL in 2027. But after the Commission voted to uphold the ban on club coaches being able to take the role and Fittler pulled out of the running, it was essentially a two-horse race between Smith and Walters to be handed the reins for Australia's Ashes campaign. And Walters appears to have won the race ahead of the tour to England with the Broncos legend already facing a dilemma within the squad.

Pete Alonso's All-Star blast headlines big week for Florida Gators in the MLB

The second half of the MLB season is officially underway, and several former Florida baseball players are back on the field–and back in the headlines. Leading the way was New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso, who launched an opposite field home run in the 2025 MLB All-Star Game while driving in three runs for the national League. Meanwhile, Harrison Bader picked up right where he left off, continuing his July power surge for the Minnesota Twins. The Kansas City Royals' Jonathan India and Jac Caglianone each had a solid weekend at the plate while Wyatt Langford struggled for the Texas Rangers out of the gate post-break. Here's how each former Gator performed over the past weekend as the second half of the season is officially underway. Pete Alonso: First Baseman, New York Mets Last 3 Games: .100 AVG | .182 OBP | .100 SLG | 0 HR | 1 RBI | 1 H 2025 Season: .275 AVG | .370 OBP | .520 SLG | 21 HR | 77 RBI 2025 All-Star Game: 1-for-2 | 1 HR | 3 RBI | 1 R Alonso delivered one of the biggest swings in the All-Star Game, launching a home run and driving in three runs. Since returning to regular season action, he's struggled at the plate. But the sample since is extremely small since it's only been taken from three games. Expect Alonso to have just as big of an impact in the second half of the season as he did in the first half. Wyatt Langford: Outfielder, Texas Rangers Last 3 Games: .000 AVG | .000 OBP | .000 SLG | 0 HR | 0 RBI | 7 SO 2025 Season: .234 AVG | .313 OBP | .419 SLG | 15 HR | 38 RBI Langford had a tough series coming out of the break, going hitless against the Detroit Tigers with seven strikeouts in three games. The Texas outfielder struggled to make consistent contact, failing to reach base in any of his 10 plate appearances. The Rangers will be counting on him to make the necessary adjustments and rediscover his rhythm as the second half of the season unfolds. Jac Caglianone: Outfielder, Kansas City Royals Last 2 Games: .250 AVG | .250 OBP | .375 SLG | 0 HR | 2 RBI | 2 H 2025 Season: .146 AVG | .204 OBP | .270 SLG | 4 HR | 9 RBI Caglianone showed signs of life at the plate this weekend, collecting a pair of hits and two RBI. The raw talent is undeniable–it's just a matter of refining his approach against big-league arms. Encouragingly, he struck out just once over his last two games, suggesting progress in his plate discipline. If he continues to trend in that direction, the former Florida slugger could soon carve out a consistent role in Kansas City's lineup. Harrison Bader: Outfielder, Minnesota Twins Last 3 Games: .222 AVG | .300 OBP | .667 SLG | 1 HR | 2 RBI 2025 Season: .253 AVG | .335 OBP | .445 SLG | 12 HR | 36 RBI Bader added to his impressive July by launching his 12th home run of the season in Colorado. The veteran outfielder continues to produce on both sides of the ball, anchoring Minnesota's outfield with strong defense and timely power. He's batting .278 with five home runs this month and has become a steady presence in the Twins' order. With his bat heating up, Bader is proving to be one of Minnesota's most complete and reliable players. Jonathan India: Infielder, Kansas City Royals Last 2 Games: .250 AVG | .250 OBP | .500 SLG | 0 HR | 2 RBI 2025 Season: .246 AVG | .328 OBP | .342 SLG | 4 HR | 26 RBI India has battled through a cold July, but a two-RBI performance Saturday against the Miami Marlins offered a glimpse of the production he's more than capable of. The Royals continue to count on his veteran presence and leadership and his ability to work counts and move runners has remained a quiet strength, even during slumps. If he can string together quality at-bats, India could really push Kansas City's offense to a different level.
