Hiker trapped in active volcano for 3 days has died, family says

Yahoo3 days ago

Rescue teams are evacuating the body of a hiker who fell into an active volcano three days ago and has died, Indonesia park officials and the victim's family reported Tuesday, June 24.
The hiker fell off a cliff on the island of Lombok near Cemara Nunggal about 6:30 a.m. local time on June 21, on her way the peak of Mount Rinjanim according to a news release from the Gunung Rinjani National Park.
Lombok is directly east of the island of Bali.
The woman's family identified her on social media as Brazilian tourist Juliana Marins and, on June 24, posted that she did not survive the catastrophe.
"Today a rescue team managed to reach the place Juliana Marins was," the post on Instagram reads. "With great sadness we inform you that she did not survive."
Marins, 27, was hiking with five friends on Mount Rinjani when she slipped and fell off the 12,224-foot-high mountain, according to information from Indonesian authorities and Reuters.
Head of local rescuers Muhammad Hariyadi told Reuters Marins "fell off a cliff on the mountain but not into the volcano crater, while noting that the soft sand in the area made it difficult to retrieve her using ropes."

Fifty people, officials reported, were involved in the rescue.
According to a release from park officials, the search and rescue team reported the hiker was spotted "using a drone, in a position stuck on a rock cliff at a depth of 500 meters and visually motionless.'
Helicopters, at the governor's instruction, were dispatched to the area in an effort to help, the release reads.
'Two rescue personnel were deployed to reach the victim's location and check the second anchor point at a depth of 350m (1,140 ft)," the park wrote in the post. "However, after observation, two large overhangs were found before reaching the victim, making it impossible to install the anchor. The rescue team had to climb to reach the victim."
But, park officials reported, "extreme terrain and dynamic weather," dense fog conditions, and narrowed visibility have hampered the recovery.
USA TODAY has reached out to the Marins family.

More Deaths in Peru: Bodies of National Geographic Photographer, Two Others Found

BY MARY ANDINO With an elevation of over 6,000m and treacherous routes to the summit, Mt. Artesonraju in the Peruvian Andes rarely sees ascents. The tragic deaths this month of an experienced climbing party show why it remains such a dangerous mountain. Several weeks after their initial disappearance, three climbers — including National Geographic photographer Edson Vandeira — were found dead on the Peruvian mountain this week. Vandeira, 36, a Brazilian native and resident of Peru, set out for the summit on May 29 with Efraín Pretel Alonzo, 34, and Jesus Manuel Picon Huerta, 31, two Peruvian mountaineers. When they did not return on June 1 as planned, volunteers began a rescue operation using drones and helicopters. After 10 days with no results, the search ended, and on June 22, the Association of Mountain Guides of Peru confirmed that they had found the climbers' bodies using drone reconnaissance. The exact timeline of events is not clear, but large falling blocks of ice likely caused the accident. The mountain has been the site of other accidents, including in 2006, when three American climbers died after falling into a crevasse. In 2018, three mountaineers perished from an avalanche. Conditions can change quickly on the mountain, and the risk of avalanches is high. With 17 years of alpine experience under his belt, Vandeira was a skilled mountaineer, The Minnesota Star-Tribune reported. In fact, Vandeira was attempting to summit Mt. Artesonraju as part of his training to become a certified mountain guide. National Geographic has featured Vandeira's photography, including this feature story on jaguars in Brazil. His work was also featured in the History Channel's Andes Extremo, a series following ascents of six of the Andes' highest peaks. Vandeira's photography ranged from capturing the peaks of Everest to showcasing voluntary veterinarians attempting to help wildlife in Brazil during wildfires. Other major projects included documenting Brazil's science program in Antarctica. Vandeira lived in Minnesota for several years, and there was an outpouring of support and grief in the local climbing community following the tragic news. 'Beyond being an extraordinarily skilled mountaineer and climber, he is an incredible human: Kind, passionate, and inspiring,' Sayyed Saif Alnabi wrote in the Minnesota Climbers Facebook group. Vandeira's former wife, Natalia Mossman Koch, launched a GoFundMe to pay for recovery efforts and help Vandeira's family travel to Peru. As of yesterday afternoon, the fundraiser had only reached about $3,500 of its $7,000 goal. Check out Vandeira's photography portfolio on his website. Vandeira's family and the Association of Mountain Guides of Peru did not respond to requests for comment. This story first appeared on GearJunkie.

Massive Brown Bear's Nighttime Swim Session Is the Ultimate Relaxation

Massive Brown Bear's Nighttime Swim Session Is the Ultimate Relaxation originally appeared on PetHelpful. Summer is here, and that means that everyone, our animal counterparts included, is looking to relax with a nice dip in the pool. And as this incredible devoted shows, that was exactly what was on this massive bear's mind when they stopped over in someone's backyard to enjoy their pool. And hey, we can't blame this guy for wanting to take a dip in summonses like this, it can still be pretty hot at night, and who doesn't enjoy a nice relaxing swim after dark? Well, doesn't that just look like a splashing good time? At first, this bear is just so happy to be in the water, splashing around like a happy human who is all too overjoyed to finally be cooling off. And after a few moments of some good old-fashioned splashing around, this massive bear calms down a little bit, as he just wins along, nice and easy around the pool, just enjoying the feeling of it as soon as his nighttime soak is done, this guy is off into the night. He took his refreshing dip, and now he is fully recharged and ready to resume his nocturnal animal adventures. While it is true that this bear was very dirty, you can really see all the dirt in the water when he first gets in the pool, Instagram user poolbearlife, who posted this video and whose pool this is, is not concerned about their pool getting dirty. They wrote, 'Yes, he's dirty. No, we don't drain the pool. The filter system and weekly maintenance handle it like a champ. He splashes, he chills, and then he's off. Just another wild night in the life here in the foothills.' Summertime backyard fun is just for us humans, clearly, bears enjoy hanging out in the backyard pool to cool off just as much as we do. This can result in frequent bear sightings in people's backyards during this time of year. And while that might sound scary, the good news is that most encounters between bears and humans are actually very peaceful. If someone does see a bear in their backyard or hanging out in their pool, the best course of action is to stay inside the house and avoid interacting with them altogether. It is highly likely that someone's backyard is actually sort of a bear's natural habitat, and all they are looking to do is escape the summertime heat for a little bit. But once they have cooled off, after a nice, relaxing swim, they will most likely move on, just like the big, adorable bear in this video. Looking for more PetHelpful updates?
