MSDE-Shell India to jointly impart skills training on green energy and EVs

Shell India
to impart
skills training
in green skills and
electric vehicles
(EV), aimed at equipping students and faculty with future-ready capabilities in
green energy
and e-mobility.
The initiative will be implemented by the directorate general of training (DGT), under MSDE, and Edunet Foundation, training partner of Shell, across select industrial training institutes (ITIs) and the national skill training institutes (NSTIs) in Delhi-NCR, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka, MSDE said in a statement issued on Friday.
Under this, specialised EV skill labs will be set up within select ITIs and NSTIs to offer hands-on training and expert-led sessions aligned with industry standards. Beyond lab-based learning, the program also provides placement support and co-branded certifications to successful participants, enhancing their employability in the green energy and EV sectors.

Under the collaboration, green skill training will be delivered through a structured multi-tier model across select NSTIs and ITIs. The program, in the first phase, will include a 240-hour advanced
EV technician course
at four NSTIs, a 90-hour job-oriented EV skills course at 12 ITIs equipped with Shell-supported labs, and a 50-hour foundational green skills module at additional ITIs without physical labs.
As per the statement, the curriculum, jointly developed by Shell, Edunet Foundation, and DGT, covers EV systems, diagnostics, battery technology, digital tools, and safety protocols.
'The initiative also includes Training of Trainers (ToT) for over 250 instructors, certification co-branded by
Shell
and DGT, and structured placement support to enhance industry readiness,' it added.
'This initiative is part of our larger vision to create a workforce that is not only job-ready, but climate-ready. We are equipping young Indians with the skills to shape, and not just participate in, the global green economy,' Jayant Chaudhary, minister of state (independent charge), MSDE said.
MSDE is of the view that a comprehensive curriculum, specialized labs, and industry support will equip students with hands-on skills and certifications, enhancing their employability and positioning them to lead in a sustainable, innovation-driven future.

India becomes fourth ‘most equal' country globally
Inequality in India has come down significantly between 2011-12 and 2022-23, making it the fourth-most equal country globally, according to a World Bank report. This is in addition to a sharp decrease in extreme poverty, which has dropped from 16.2% in 2011-12 to 2.3% in 2022-23, an official release said, quoting World Bank data. The government attributed the reduction in inequality to various initiatives and schemes pursued during the past decade. The only three countries that have a better Gini Index score, a measure of equality, are the Slovak Republic, Slovenia and Belarus. India is much better placed than countries like China, the United States and the United Kingdom. '...India's Gini Index stands at 25.5, making it the fourth most equal country in the world, after the Slovak Republic, Slovenia and Belarus,' the statement said. The Gini Index helps in understanding how equally income, wealth or consumption is distributed across households or individuals in a country. It ranges in value from 0 to 100. A score of 0 means perfect equality, while a score of 100 means one person has all the income, wealth or consumption and others have none, hence absolute inequality. The higher the Gini Index, the more unequal a country is. India's score is much lower than China's 35.7 and far lower than the United States, which stands at 41.8. As per the World Bank's report, which has released the data for 167 countries, India falls into the 'moderately low' inequality category, which includes Gini scores between 25 and 30. India is only a fraction away from joining the 'low inequality' group. Reduction in poverty a factor The government attributed this achievement to a sharp reduction in the poverty level in the last decade. According to the World Bank report, 171 million Indians have been lifted out of extreme poverty over the past decade. The share of people living on less than USD 2.15 a day, which was the global threshold for extreme poverty till June 2025, fell sharply from 16.2% in 2011-12 to just 2.3% in 2022-23. Globally, just 30 countries fall into the 'moderately low' inequality category, including several European countries with strong welfare systems. These include Iceland, Norway, Finland, and Belgium. It also features growing economies like Poland and wealthy nations like the United Arab Emirates. The release said India's journey towards a more equal society is reflected in its Gini Index over the years. The index was measured at 28.8 in 2011 and reached 25.5 in 2022. 'This steady shift shows that India has made consistent progress in combining economic growth with social equity,' it said. Welfare schemes It further said India's progress towards greater income equality is backed by a series of focused government initiatives. These schemes aim to improve financial access, deliver welfare benefits efficiently, and support vulnerable and underrepresented groups. 'Together, they have helped bridge gaps, boost livelihoods, and ensure that growth reaches all sections of society,' the release said. It has cited schemes like PM Jan Dhan Yojana, Direct Benefit Transfer, and Stand-Up India, among others, which have helped India in its progress towards greater income equality. 'India's path to income equality has been steady and focused. The Gini Index of 25.5 is not just a number. It reflects real change in people's lives. More families now have access to food, banking, healthcare, and jobs,' the release said. What sets India apart is its ability to balance economic reform with strong social protection, it said. Targeted schemes like Jan Dhan, DBT, and Ayushman Bharat have helped close long-standing gaps,' it said. At the same time, programmes such as Stand-Up India and PM Vishwakarma Yojana are helping people create wealth and secure livelihoods on their own terms. 'As the world looks for models that combine growth with fairness, India's example stands out. Its experience shows that equality and development are not separate goals,' the release said. When supported by sound policy and inclusive intent, they move forward together, it added.

Argentina lithium reserve
Buenos Aires [Argentina], July 6 (ANI): The Ministry of External Affairs on Saturday (local time) emphasised India's great interest in Argentina's lithium reserve, noting Indian public sector companies are 'working out the implementation of the investments' in the Latin Amercian country to produce, refine, and export minerals. Addressing a press conference, MEA's Secretary (East) P Kumaran noted the efforts of Coal India Limited and Khanij Bidesh India Limited to pick up critical minerals assets in other countries for India. 'Argentina is a part of the Lithium Triangle. It is of great interest to us. We had two Indian public sector companies, Coal India Limited and a consortium called KABIL, which is specifically tasked with picking up critical minerals and assets outside India. They have signed five concession agreements and are working on finalizing investments and working out the implementation of the investments in such a way that minerals can be produced here, refined and taken to India for various purposes and are working on finalising investments to implement them in a manner that allows minerals to be produced, refined, and exported,' Kumaran said. MEA's Secretary East also noted that two private sector companies owned by Indians have also invested in lithium concession in Argentina and hoped for more cooperation between the two nations. 'There are two private sector companies: one from India, called Greenco, and another Indian-owned company based in the UAE, World Metal Alloys, which is also invested in lithium concessions in Argentina. Hopefully, we will have more cooperation in the coming years,' Kumaran said. During his visit to Argentina, Prime Minister Narendra Modi discussed cooperation in the energy and critical minerals sectors with Argentine President Javier Milei, underlining India's growing energy and industrial needs while emphasising that Buenos Aires can serve as a 'reliable partner.' MEA's Secretary (East) Kumaran emphasised that Argentina's rich reserves of critical minerals, such as lithium, copper, and rare earth elements, align with India's need for its clean energy transition and industrial growth. 'The two leaders also had an opportunity to discuss cooperation in the energy and critical mineral sectors. The Prime Minister underlined India's growing energy and industrial needs and emphasised that Argentina could serve as a reliable partner in supporting India's developmental journey,' Kumaran said. 'Argentina's rich reserves of critical minerals, including lithium, copper and rare earth elements, align with India's need for secure and sustainable resources to drive its clean energy transition and industrial growth,' he added. Argentina is the third leg of PM Modi's five-nation tour after Ghana, and Trinidad and Tobago. It will be followed by visits to Brazil and Namibia. (ANI)

PM Modi honoured with symbolic ‘Key to the city of Buenos Aires' during landmark Argentina visit
Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a special honour in Argentina on Saturday – the "Key to the City of Buenos Aires". Jorge Macri, the city's chief official, gave him this symbolic gift during his two-day visit. The key represents friendship and trust. Earlier, PM Modi met President Javier Milei for important talks. This visit was historic because it was the first time in 57 years that an Indian Prime Minister came to Argentina just for bilateral talks (not for a big conference). Hundreds of Indian immigrants cheered PM Modi outside his hotel, waving flags and dancing to Indian music. Modi's Argentina stop was part of a bigger five-country tour where he collected major awards. Before this, in Trinidad and Tobago, he got 'The Order of the Republic', their highest civilian honour. He's the first foreign leader ever to receive it. During that visit, both countries signed six agreements to work more closely together. PM Modi thanked Trinidad for honouring him and said the award wasn't just for him but for all 1.4 billion Indians . After Argentina, he will join the BRICS summit in Brazil and then visit Namibia. PM Modi and President Milei agreed to boost cooperation in important areas during their talks. Argentina will supply lithium (a key mineral for electric car batteries) and shale gas to India. This helps India's energy security plans. Argentina has the world's second-largest shale gas reserves. PM Modi also asked for easier entry of affordable Indian medicines into Argentina. The leaders agreed to expand defence partnerships and trade between the countries. PM Modi even invited Milei to visit India soon, especially to see Gujarat's lion sanctuary! Beyond formal meetings, PM Modi paid respects at important cultural spots. He visited the San Martin Memorial, honouring Argentina's national hero who helped free South America from colonial rule. The visit strengthened people-to-people ties too – PM Modi showed President Milei how India uses drones in farming (the "Drone Didi" initiative). Before leaving, PM Modi called the trip "productive" and said the India-Argentina relationship has "even more promise" ahead.
