Israeli refusal to allow safe entry of Gaza aid stalls truce talks, Palestinian sources say

Yahoo4 hours ago
CAIRO (Reuters) -Israel's refusal to allow the free and safe entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza remains the main obstacle to progress in the ceasefire talks being held in Qatar, Palestinian sources told Reuters on Monday.
The two sources said mediators hosted one indirect round of ceasefire talks between Palestinian militant group Hamas and Israeli officials earlier on Monday, and talks were expected to resume in the evening.

Iran's Khamenei Looks to the Past For Route to Regime Survival

For almost four decades Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has defined his rule and Iran's place in the world through his hostility to Israel and the US. Last month that enmity culminated in a military attack on the Islamic Republic when Israel launched heavy airstrikes on Tehran and across the country. The assault embarrassed the leadership, which had been caught off guard, and while the Supreme Leader survived the 12-day conflict and a US bombing raid on Iran's key nuclear sites, more than 1,000 Iranians, mostly civilians, didn't. Some of Iran's most powerful military figures were assassinated. The fallout has intensified scrutiny of the 86-year-old cleric — the ultimate authority in Iran — and raised questions about how long he can remain in power, who or what might replace him and what that means for a country at the heart of the Middle East with an economy sapped by years of sanctions.

Thailand Confident of Securing Lower US Tariff With Trade Offers

Thailand remains optimistic about securing a lower tariff rate than the 36% levy announced by President Donald Trump based on an offer to bring down import tax on most US goods to zero, according to Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira. The Southeast Asian nation expects to wrap up trade negotiations before the Aug. 1 deadline set by the US, Pichai told a local television channel on Tuesday. Trump has set the levy on Thailand without taking into account its revised proposals to increase market access by removing tariff and non-tariff barriers on a number of goods, he said.
