Chandigarh MC accelerates bioremediation to clear legacy waste
Chandigarh: The municipal corporation, Chandigarh, nears the completion of bioremediation of the third and final legacy waste dump at the Dadumajra dumpsite, as the civic body on Monday claimed to have processed 70-75% of the waste. The MC stated that, despite challenges, the project was accelerated with a 15 to 20-fold increase in deployed machinery and manpower. Since Chandigarh failed to achieve the 7-star ranking even after applying in this specific category for Swachh Survekshan and received just a 3-star rating under the Garbage Free City (GFC) category, the piled-up final or third legacy waste at the Daddumajra dump site was found to be the prime culprit for this. Although the MC is working to remove this garbage dump and work is ongoing at the site, there was a consistent delay in the work and multiple breaches of the deadlines were witnessed in the past. While justifying its efforts in this regard, the MC on Monday said that this final or third waste mound, comprising approximately 2.40 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) of legacy waste, is being cleared with support from two major public sector undertakings (PSUs) and the existing agency, operating in two dedicated shifts to ensure rapid progress. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The completion of this bioremediation effort marks the end of landfill dependency for Chandigarh, a transformative step towards sustainable urban living. "As per the report of July 21 (Monday) till 5 pm, only 59,000 metric tonnes of legacy waste remain to be processed in the final dump," the MC claimed through an official release. Box: There were a total of three major dumps of legacy waste, piled up over many decades at the Daddumajra dumping site due to the non-processing of the waste earlier. This entire exercise of removal of legacy waste started around seven years ago, and the first work to remove the first dump of the legacy waste was inaugurated by the then governor of Punjab and Chandigarh administrator, V P Singh Badnore, in Dec 2019. Change girl's surname in birth certificate in four weeks: HC
1 2 Kolkata: A child's identity, including her surname, is an integral part of her personal development and autonomy, said the Calcutta High Court, directing the Chandernagore Municipality to accede to a teenaged girl's plea to change her surname in her birth certificate from her biological father's to her mother's in four weeks. After her parents' divorce, the Class-IX girl, a minor, wanted to change her surname from Chatterjee, her father's, to Bhattacharya, her mother's maiden name, in her birth certificate owing to personal and emotional reasons. But the municipality rejected her plea. The girl, represented by her mother, approached the bench of Justice Gaurang Kanth, seeking directions for the change in official records. "Courts have consistently held that when the change in name or surname does not adversely affect any legal or statutory right of a third party and is sought in furtherance of the child's best interest, such change ought to be allowed," Justice Kanth said. But it was made clear that the removal of the father's surname from official records would not affect his legal status or the child's legitimate rights, including succession or inheritance rights to his property. Following matrimonial discord, the couple separated and the daughter lived with her mother at her maternal grandparents' home. The couple got divorced on May 13, 2015. After the divorce, the woman as well as her daughter adopted the surname, 'Bhattacharya', in place of 'Chatterjee'. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Could Be the Best Time to Trade Gold in 5 Years IC Markets Learn More Undo In certain documents, such as Aadhar and passport, the daughter's surname was recorded as 'Bhattacharya', while in some others, such as the birth certificate, it continued to be 'Chatterjee'. The petitioner asserted that the uniform change of surname in all official documents was not only necessary for maintaining consistency in records but also crucial for safeguarding her emotional well-being and personal sense of identity. The girl's counsel said she no longer desired to keep her father's surname but the municipality rejected her plea, saying change of surname in the birth certificate was not allowed merely on account of parents' change of marital status. The father was not represented in the matter, despite several notices.

Bengaluru Metro Phase 3: Operator brings down tree loss estimate to 6,000
Bengaluru: Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) officials Monday clarified that the tree loss during the construction of Namma Metro Phase 3 will likely be much lower than feared earlier. While the initial figure stood at around 11,000, BMRCL's environment wing has now revised this to approximately 6,800 trees after an internal assessment. "All 6,000-plus trees will not be removed. Some will be cut, some transplanted, and some retained," said Kanakaraj MH, assistant engineer (environment), BMRCL, adding that the exact number would depend on the ground situation during construction. The statement came after environmentalists raised serious concerns about the impact of Metro expansion on Bengaluru's green cover. Activists demanded greater transparency and access to data on how many trees will be felled, pruned, or relocated, and the exact locations of transplantation efforts. A public consultation meeting on the matter was held Monday. Parvathi Srirama, an environmental activist present at the meeting, said: "They are telling everything orally. We want statistics. How many trees are going to be saved correctly? How many trees are going to be pruned? How many are they relocating and where? What are the species? What is the age of the trees?" You Can Also Check: Bengaluru AQI | Weather in Bengaluru | Bank Holidays in Bengaluru | Public Holidays in Bengaluru Responding to concerns about rising air and noise pollution following previous construction phases, Kanakaraj acknowledged that Metro work does contribute to the city's air quality issues. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Many Are Watching Tariffs - Few Are Watching What Nvidia Just Launched Seeking Alpha Read More Undo "But there are multiple sectors adding to pollution. It's not always high," he added. BMRCL officials reiterated their commitment to compensating for the loss of green cover. For every tree removed, the agency has pledged to plant 10 new saplings within city limits and maintain them for at least three years. However, environmentalists questioned the status of compensatory plantations carried out for earlier Metro phases and sought data on the survival rates of transplanted trees. The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report on Phase 3 is currently being finalised. "We have asked the public and NGOs for their point of view. We are noting it down. The EIA report is on the verge of completion," Kanakaraj said. According to sources, the report is expected to be ready for review by Aug and will likely be published in Oct. Phase 3 of Metro will add 44km to the network, providing new connections to the traffic-heavy western section of the Outer Ring Road.
