India, Ghana plan to boost ties in defence cooperation, food security, vaccine
Modi arrived in the Ghanaian capital of Accra on Wednesday as part of a five-nation tour and was received at the airport personally by Mahama and given a ceremonial welcome. This is the first visit to the West African nation by an Indian premier in three decades and Modi's trip is part of India's outreach to the Global South.
'Today, the president and I decided to elevate our bilateral relationship into a comprehensive partnership,' Modi told a joint media interaction with Mahama after their talks on Wednesday.
'In Ghana's journey of nation building, India is not just a supporter, but a fellow traveller.'
Modi listed the Grand Jubilee House, Foreign Services Institute, Komenda Sugar Factory, India-Ghana Kofi Annan ICT Centre, and Tema Mpakadan Railway Line – all built with Indian support – as symbols of the bilateral partnership. With two-way trade crossing $3 billion and Indian companies investing $2 billion in 900 projects across Ghana, the two sides set a target of doubling trade over the next five years.

The two leaders highlighted their plans to accelerate cooperation in key areas such as defence cooperation, food security and pharmaceuticals, especially vaccines. These initiatives dovetail with Mahama's 'Ghana Reset Agenda', launched six months ago.
'In agriculture, it will be our pleasure to lend support towards President Mahama's 'Feed Ghana' programme,' Modi said, speaking in Hindi. 'We've discussed cooperation in vaccine production.
'In defence and security, we will move forward with the mantra of 'security through stability'. Cooperation will be extended in training of armed forces, maritime security, defence supplies and cyber security,' he said.
Mahama said Ghana is keen to sign formal agreements with India on defence cooperation, vaccine production and supply of agricultural machinery. 'Both countries will work to deepen economic and investment relations at a time that Ghana is undergoing economic restructuring due to the debt treatments we're undergoing in the IMF programme,' he said.
Modi offered to share India's expertise with the Unified Payment Interface (UPI) digital payments system with Ghana and to provide affordable healthcare through Jan Aushadhi Kendras. 'Indian companies shall cooperate in the exploration and mining of critical minerals,' he said.
The two leaders also discussed counter-terrorism and Modi said the two countries will strengthen their cooperation in these efforts. 'We express our sincere gratitude to Ghana for its cooperation in our fight against terrorism,' he said.
'Our perspectives on UN reforms are closely aligned. We both have expressed deep concern at ongoing conflicts in West Asia and Europe. We firmly believe that this is not an era of war. Issues must be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy,' he said.
The two countries signed four memorandums of understanding (MoUs), including one on creating a permanent Joint Commission to institutionalise high-level dialogue and review bilateral cooperation, and another on cultural exchanges.
Another MoU was signed by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) to enhance cooperation in certification and conformity assessment, while Ghana's Institute of Traditional and Alternative Medicine (ITAM) and India's Institute of Teaching and Research in Ayurveda (ITRA) finalised an MoU on traditional medicine education, training and research.
Dammu Ravi, secretary (economic relations) in the external affairs ministry, told a media briefing that Mahama sought India's support to develop Ghana as a 'food basket' and provide food security to the people, and to create a vaccine hub in the country to cater to West Africa.
'Some development has already taken place in collaboration with the Global Vaccine Alliance and, in that context, he wants Indian entrepreneurs to…set up manufacturing units in pharma and vaccines, where India clearly has advanced its capacities,' Ravi said.
Mahama also sought defence cooperation in the context of Ghana's concerns related to terrorism from the Sahel region and piracy in nearby seas. 'There is clear interest to have India's support in terms of support of the equipment, training of personnel and to be able to source equipment from India,' he said.
'There was also concern for the way terrorism is affecting the world. President Mahama clearly expressed solidarity with India. He condemned the Pahalgam terrorist attack, and he was very clear and unequivocal in his support for India and solidarity in the fight against terrorism,' Ravi said.
Ghana is one of the fastest growing economies in West Africa, and India is among the country's top trading partners. India is also the largest destination for Ghanaian exports, driven largely by imports of gold, which accounts for more than 70% of total imports from Ghana. In FY 2024-25, two-way trade reached $3.1 billion, with India's exports amounting to $1.34 billion.
India is one of the top investors in Ghana, ranking second in number of projects (11) and fifth in terms of FDI value ($ 16.08 million) during January-September 2024.
Ghana is home to an Indian community of more than 15,000. Some of them have been in the country for more than 70 years and most have acquired Ghanaian citizenship.

Op Sindoor debate in Parl today, PM Modi says precision strikes a message for terrorists
PM Modi set the tone of the government as the Parliament prepares for a fiery debate on the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor. The Prime Minister warned that there will be no safe havens for terrorists read more As the Indian parliament gears up to debate the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Sunday that the precision strikes of Pakistani terror camps in May were India's message that there are no safe havens for terrorists and their masters. While speaking at an event in Tamil Nadu's Gangaikonda Cholapuram, the prime minister said that India places the highest priority on its national security. He emphasised that Operation Sindoor has created a new awakening and a new self-confidence across the country. PM Modi was attending the event to honour Chola emperor Rajendra Chola when he made his stance on the matter clear. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'The world witnessed India's firm and decisive response to the threat against its sovereignty during Operation Sindoor, and it has sent a clear message: there is no haven for terrorists and enemies of the nation,' the prime minister said in his address. PM Modi sets the tone of the government ahead of the debate Many believe that with this address, the prime minister has set the tone for the government's response to the debate in parliament, which will take place in the Lok Sabha on Monday. Meanwhile, the Opposition is planning to open the front by talking about the big terror attacks under 'PM Modi's watch'. The debate in Lok Sabha is coming after a first week of disruption of Parliament's Monsoon session and is expected to be a fiery one. The two sides have agreed to a marathon 16-hour debate in each House, which invariably stretches longer in practice. Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is likely to initiate the debate immediately after the question hour in the Lok Sabha. Sources close to the matter told The Times of India that Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will be speaking on the issues amid indications that the PM may intervene to convey his government's 'robust' stand against terrorism. Meanwhile, the Leader of the Opposition in LS and RS - Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge - would lead the charge against the government along with Samajwadi Party's Akhilesh Yadav. It is believed that Congress is planning to attack the government and particularly PM Modi over national security. The Opposition is most likely to point toward the repeated big terror attacks under PM Modi's watch. Since the Pahalgam terror attack, Congress and the opposition have been pointing out that the terrorists singled out the tourists by religion to execute them. Ahead of the debate, Congress also raised the issue of US President Donald Trump's claims of halting Operation Sindoor and calling for a ceasefire between India and Pakistan. On Sunday, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh pointed out that since May 10, Trump has claimed '26 times' that he stopped the operation by 'threatening to cut off trade with India, and claimed that five fighter jets may have been shot down'. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'Even though Congress had been demanding a special two-day session of Parliament immediately after Operation Sindoor was abruptly halted, that demand was ignored. Nevertheless, better late than never,' he wrote in a post on X.

With new energy, JSW Group gets ready to disrupt EV market
Sajjan Jindal-led JSW Group has set up a dedicated automotive vertical-JSW Motors. This will be an umbrella platform under which the group will launch passenger cars focussed on new energy vehicles at an investment of up to $3 billion over the next five years with launches set to begin in the second half of FY26. It will be separate from the group's joint venture with China's SAIC, JSW MG Motor India. JSW Motors is in talks with three-four companies across Italy, Germany, South Korea and China for collaborations to design and develop these cars, which will be sold under the JSW brand, newly appointed chief executive officer Ranjan Nayak told ET in his first media interview. All vehicles will be made in India, with the earmarked resources deployed for commissioning the manufacturing facility, research and development. JSW's automotive hub, spread across 630 acres, is coming up at Bidkin in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar in Maharashtra. Elaborating on the expansion strategy, Nayak said JSW Motors is aiming to disrupt the domestic electric vehicle (EV) market by manufacturing "world class automotive products in the country" by leveraging the best technologies from across the globe, including Italy, Germany, South Korea and China, and combining that with India's own strengths in robust supply chain and digital integration. "We are looking at rapidly scaling up our in-house automotive technology, and not remain dependent on any external entity. Our integrated approach allows us to combine global excellence with local relevance, ensuring high performance, affordability and sustainability," Nayak said, adding, "Our first New Energy Vehicle (NEV) under the JSW badge will hit the roads in the second half of FY2026." Nayak said JSW Motors is drawing on "the unique strengths of industry-leading partners" from around the world, without specifying details of the companies it is collaborating with. "We will be combining the craftsmanship and aesthetics of Italian designers and the German precision in manufacturing and engineering with the advanced welding technologies from South Korea and China's expertise in electric propulsion systems, battery innovation and New Energy Vehicle (NEV) technologies with that of the Indian IT sector's deep capabilities in software and digital integration," said Nayak. He declined to share details of the investments the JSW Group has scheduled for its automotive venture. However, industry sources said the group has lined up an investment to the tune of $2-3 billion in its automotive business over the next five years. Similar to its strategy in the steel sector, JSW intends to "energize the auto ecosystem-spurring suppliers and competitors to rise with us" to accelerate India's shift to clean mobility and reduce its dependence on oil, said Nayak, who is also executive vice president and head, corporate strategy, JSW Group. "Our aim is to push New Energy Vehicle penetration to 50%, offering affordable, world-class electric, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid vehicles," he said. Nayak said China is at the forefront of EV and hybrid vehicle innovation and has become an integral part of the global automotive supply chain. As the world rapidly shifts toward sustainable mobility, technologies such as Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs), pioneered by Chinese automakers, are redefining the industry landscape. By combining the best global technologies with India's own strengths, JSW Motors intends to bring high-quality, technologically advanced, energy efficient and environmentally responsible vehicles. This approach will deliver "unmatched value to Indian customers and propel the country towards a more secure, sustainable and self-reliant automotive future," he said. "Like global industry leaders-including those from Europe, America (like Tesla and GM), and Japan-we embrace relevant advancements from China and other innovation hubs, integrating them within India's ecosystem. Promoting EV, PHEV and hybrid technologies is also critical from an energy security standpoint." he said.

Bihar voter roll revision: 91.6% electors submitted forms, 65 lakh names may be removed, says EC
The Election Commission on Sunday said that 91.6% electors in Bihar had submitted their enumeration forms for the special intensive revision of the state's electoral rolls by the end of the first phase of the exercise on Friday. The poll panel said that more than 7.2 crore out of the state's 7.8 crore electors had submitted the forms by the deadline, indicating 'overwhelming participation'. This would mean that the remaining 65 lakh names registered in the July 2025 list may not make it to the draft rolls to be published on August 1. The Election Commission added that 2.8% electors (22 lakh) had died, 4.5% (26 lakh) had permanently shifted and 0.8% persons (7 lakh) were found to be enrolled at more than one place. The exact status of the 65 lakh electors would be known after forms are scrutinised by the electoral registration officers or assistant electoral registration officers by August 1, the statement said. 'However, genuine electors can still be added back in electoral rolls during the Claims and Objection period from 1st August to 1st September 2025,' the poll panel added. It said that the electors found enrolled at multiple places would be retained only at one place. The poll panel said in a statement that efforts were also made to ensure that no migrant worker was left behind. This included advertisements in Hindi published in 246 newspapers and requesting all states and Union Territories to make efforts to reach out to the migrants from Bihar. About 16 lakh migrant workers had filled the enumeration forms online while about 13 lakh had downloaded the forms, it added. The revision of the electoral rolls in Bihar was announced by the Election Commission on June 24. As part of the exercise, persons whose names were not on the 2003 voter list will need to submit proof of eligibility to vote. Voters born before July 1, 1987, must show proof of their date and place of birth, while those born between July 1, 1987, and December 2, 2004, must also submit documents establishing the date and place of birth of one of their parents. Those born after December 2, 2004, will need proof of date of birth for themselves and both parents. If the officers are satisfied with the details provided, the voters will be re-enrolled to a new voter list by the electoral registration officers. If not, they will be removed from the voter lists. A draft roll will be published on August 1 and the final roll will be out on September 30. Bihar is expected to head for Assembly polls in October or November. On July 2, eleven INDIA bloc parties told the Election Commission that the special intensive revision of Bihar's electoral rolls risked disenfranchising several voters, as they may not be able to produce the necessary documents. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on July 6 defended the exercise, claiming that the exercise had to be carried out as no one was satisfied with the current voter rolls. On July 10, the Supreme Court urged the Election Commission to consider Aadhaar cards, voter ID cards and ration cards as valid documents for the revision of electoral rolls. However, on July 21, the Election Commission told the court that Aadhaar cards, voter ID cards and ration cards cannot be included as standalone valid documents for the exercise. In a counter-affidavit filed in the court, the poll panel also stated that a person's citizenship will 'not terminate' on being found ineligible for registration in the electoral rolls. The court will hear the matter next on Monday. 'Why a big fuss' On Sunday, the Election Commission reiterated that the draft electoral roll to be published on August 1 was not the final voter list, adding that a month's time would be given to include eligible electors and exclude those ineligible, PTI reported. The poll panel said that it was 'not able to understand' why a 'big fuss' was being created when a month-long period will be available to point out wrongful inclusions and exclusions to the list. Political parties were free to check with their workers on the progress of the process, it said. 'Why not ask their 1.6 lakh booth-level agents to submit claims and objections from August 1 till September 1?' the news agency quoted the commission as saying. Booth-level agents appointed by political parties work with Election Commission officers in preparing or updating the voter list. 'Why are some persons trying to give an impression that the draft list is the final list, which it is not, as per special Intensive revision orders,' the poll panel added.
