Italy may release up 10,000 people from prison to ease overcrowding

Find out what's new on ST website and app. ROME - Italy may release up to around 10,000 people from prison, or about 15% of the total population of inmates, to ease overcrowding, the Justice Ministry has announced. Some 10,105 prisoners are "potentially eligible" for alternative measures to prison, such as house arrest or probation, the ministry said in a statement late on Tuesday. The option would apply to people whose convictions are final and no longer subject to appeal, less than 2 years of sentences left to serve, and no serious disciplinary offences in the past 12 months. People serving time for serious crimes such as terrorism, organized crime, rape, migrant trafficking and kidnapping would be excluded, the ministry added. According to the World Prison Brief database, Italy has one of Europe's worst prison overcrowding records, with an occupancy level of around 122%. Any level above 100% indicates that prisons are occupied above their maximum capacity. Only Cyprus, France and Turkey have higher scores in Europe, according to the database. The plight of prisoners has attracted attention in Italy following a rise in suicides and complaints about soaring summer temperatures in detention facilities that are not air- conditioned. Three men guilty of accessory to the murder of Swedish rapper C.Gambino, court rules

Find out what's new on ST website and app. FILE PHOTO: Roses are laid at Selma Lagerlofs square in Gothenburg after the famous rapper C. Gambino was shot to death on Tuesday evening in a parking garage in Gothenburg, Sweden on june 05, 2024. TT News Agency/Bjorn Larsson Rosvall via REUTERS/File photo STOCKHOLM - A Swedish court found three men guilty of accessory to the murder last year of the award-winning hip-hop artist known by the alias it said on Wednesday. The Swedish artist, who kept his identity hidden and wore a mask in public, was shot dead in a parking garage in June 2024 in a suspected gang-related attack in Gothenburg on the Nordic country's west coast. The men - Hassan Rabeie, 22, Vide Atterstam, 20, and Fatjam Vardari, 21 - have denied the charges against them, according to Swedish media. Rabeie and Vardari had been charged with murder, or alternatively accessory to murder, but the Gothenburg District Court said in a statement that the investigation had not established beyond reasonable doubt that they were the ones who actually shot the rapper. As a result, all three were convicted of accessory to murder. The court sentenced Rabeie to life imprisonment. The other two were sentenced to 15 years and six months, and 12 years and six months, respectively. "The shooting has had the character of a pure execution and has entailed severe suffering for the victim," the court said. "The crime has its background in a conflict between criminal networks."
