Bersih welcomes appointment of Malaysia's three top judges
The Bersih steering committee expressed hope that Wan Ahmad's firm stance in upholding the country's principles of sovereignty would continue in his tenure as Chief Justice, adding that Wan Ahmad Farid, who had been part of the political paty Umno, had recused himself from hearing former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's case as a High Court judge in 2022.
"Such a stance is vital to ensure that the public respects the judiciary as a body that upholds the principle of legal sovereignty,' the committee said in a statement on Friday (July 18), adding that it was vital for Wan Ahamd to avoid causing negative public perception towards the independence of the judicial institution.
The appointment of the top three judges, Wan Ahmad Farid as Chief Justice, Datuk Abu Bakar Jais as president of the Court of Appeals and Datuk Azizah Nawawi as Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak, was made public on Thursday (July 17).
The appointments were made based on Clause (1) of Article 122B of the Federal Constitution, after obtaining the consent of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on the advice of the Prime Minister and after consulting the Conference of Rulers.
They are set to receive their letters of appointment and take their oaths of office in front of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia at Istana Negara on July 28, 2025.- Bernama

Anwar open to talks with Umno leaders over Najib's royal addendum
One hundred and sixty Umno division chiefs have urged Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to uphold a royal addendum allowing Najib Razak to serve the remainder of his prison term under house arrest. PUTRAJAYA : Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is prepared to hold discussions with Umno leaders over a royal addendum allowing former party president Najib Razak to serve the remainder of his prison sentence under house arrest. Anwar said he was aware that several Umno division chiefs had recently voiced concerns over the matter. 'I am ready to meet with them, provide clarification if needed, or take any steps necessary to preserve harmony,' he told reporters after Friday prayers here. Attorney-General Dusuki Mokhtar is appealing to set aside a majority 2-1 ruling on Jan 6 that allowed Najib's application to adduce additional evidence on the addendum and order the High Court to hear his judicial review. Umno division chiefs, however, said the attorney-general should 'uphold' the addendum and 'support justice'. They also called on Anwar to implement the addendum. Separately, Anwar said he hoped speculation over alleged interference in judicial appointments will be put to rest following the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's assent to several key postings. 'The allegations of interference have been proven baseless, after weeks of attacks and slander directed at me,' he said. 'I hope that with this explanation, and with the decision endorsed by the Conference of Rulers and approved by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, the slander and anxiety surrounding this issue can now be laid to rest.' In a statement yesterday, the office of the chief registrar said the Yang di-Pertuan Agong had consented to Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh's appointment as chief justice, Abu Bakar Jais's appointment as president of the Court of Appeal, and Azizah Nawawi's appointment as chief judge of Sabah and Sarawak. They will be sworn in and presented with their letters of appointment at Istana Negara on July 28.

Speaking at a political rally titled 'Himpunan Mandat Negarawan' (Statesmen's Mandate Gathering) held at Sultan Abdul Halim Stadium in Alor Setar on Thursday evening (17 July), Mahathir emphasised that while prime ministerial positions typically change through general elections, there are precedents in multiple countries where prime ministers have voluntarily resigned due to public pressure. 'I myself resigned from the prime ministerial position due to party pressure. Now Anwar faces even broader public opposition, so he should resign immediately,' Mahathir said during his speech. The 100-year-old former leader argued that resignation should not wait for elections, stating: 'If the people are dissatisfied, the prime minister should resign.' International Examples Cited Mahathir provided several international examples to support his argument, including that of former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who resigned following public anger over COVID-19 regulation violations. Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina stepped down following large-scale public protests, and Japanese prime ministers, who traditionally resign when facing misconduct, do so without waiting for elections. 'As prime minister, one should consider the people's feelings,' he said. The former premier criticised Anwar's governance, alleging the mismanagement of national wealth and the cancellation of various subsidies provided to the people, which led to public hardship. 'Today, everyone has gathered here because we face the same problem – our country is wealthy, but the people remain poor. This is clearly the result of incompetent governance,' Mahathir stated. He claimed that many Malaysians currently face food insecurity and that some people, under tremendous pressure, have lost their sanity and resorted to suicide or violence against family members, attributing these issues to poverty. Old Wounds, New Battles Mahathir noted that people have organised various gatherings to express dissatisfaction with the current government and to pressure Anwar to resign from his position as Prime Minister. The rally represents the latest in a series of political challenges facing Anwar's administration since he assumed the role of prime minister. The relationship between Mahathir and Anwar has been marked by turbulence, stemming from political rivalry and a complicated history that includes periods of both partnership and conflict. The animosity is rooted in envy and the fear of political replacement, particularly during the early days of their time in UMNO, where Mahathir felt threatened by Anwar's rising popularity.
