Man who beat pregnant partner and held her head under water to learn his fate

A carpet fitter who beat his pregnant partner continuously after accusing her of cheating has been remanded in custody pending sentence next October.
John Hoey (24) of St Catherine's Park, Rush, Co Dublin, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to criminal damage on March 31, 2024 and assault causing the woman harm on April 3, 2024.
Garda Niamh Owens told Caroline Cummings BL, prosecuting, that when gardaí arrived at the scene they found the woman with a black eye and a cut to her head. She said she and Hoey had been in a relationship for 18 months.
She said they had been living together and things had deteriorated between them over the previous month. She told gardaí he had been accessing her Snapchat and had accused her of cheating. A few days previously he had smashed their patio door and had struck her in the face leaving her with a black eye.
Gda Owens said the woman's account to gardaí of the assault on her that night was 'disjointed'. She said there were periods of Hoey beating her before he calmed down only to start attacking her again.
During the attack, Hoey pushed the woman's head under the water while she was having a bath, he threatened her with a Stanley knife and grabbed her by the throat causing her to pass out. He continually referred to her use of Snapchat and at one point accused her of emotional and sexual relationships with other people.

Towards the end of the attack Hoey threatened to kill the woman if he saw one more message on Snapchat that he didn't like. They had recently found out she was pregnant, the court heard.
She panicked and tried to run for the front door, but Hoey grabbed her by the throat, lifted her up and threw her across the hall. When she got up from this fall, she managed to escape from the house.
Hoey chased her through the estate. He pushed her into the side of a skip but she managed to run away again. She was screaming for help and two people passing by gave her their phone so she could contact gardaí'
Gda Owens agreed that the woman told gardaí when she initially called them that she still loved Hoey, that she was concerned for his mental health and she didn't want him to get into any trouble.
Gda Owens said Hoey was not at the house when they arrived there around 4.30am. They found him shortly afterwards wheeling a young child around in a pram.
Hoey made admissions during a follow-up interview with gardaí. He has no previous convictions and the woman and Hoey are still in a relationship. Their baby was born late last year. The woman did not complete a victim impact statement.
Eoghan Weldon BL, defending, said his client is currently working as a carpet fitter. He said Hoey was 'subject to a serious amount of violence growing up' and is aware that he has anger management issues.
Mr Weldon said he was not trying to minimise what his client did, describing Hoey as being 'very stupid and very foolish' on the night. He acknowledged that Hoey was fortunate that the woman did not suffer more serious injuries.
Counsel said that Hoey has attended for counselling and anger management since the assault. Mr Weldon said his client is committed to being there for his young daughter and his partner's other children. He asked the court to consider ordering a report from The Probation Service before imposing sentence.
Ms Cummings told Judge Orla Crowe that if the defence wished to have the case adjourned to allow for the preparation of a probation report the State were requesting for Hoey to have his bail revoked and remanded in custody.
Judge Crowe said it had been her intention to remand Hoey in custody after she said 'the case was very concerning'. She adjourned sentence to next October and said Hoey should engage with The Probation Service and undergo any courses that would focus on domestic violence.
Gda Owens said that Hoey pushed the victim's head under the water while she was having a bath after he struck her in the stomach with a toilet brush causing her to bleed. He also pushed her head and into the side of the bath banging her nose and tooth. She begged him to stop and pushed him away. He then 'turned nice' and tried to help.
Hoey went back on the woman's Snapchat and complained that she had been speaking to people behind his back. She picked up a bag to pack and leave. Hoey then boxed the woman in the skull causing to hit her head off the wardrobe. He apologised and said he had not meant to box her.
She went to leave the bedroom to sleep in the sitting room but Hoey followed her and convinced her to come back to their bed. He was calm at that point but then again accused her of emotional and sexual relationship with other people. He grabbed a Stanley knife and threatened the woman with it, pointing it at her face and close to neck. He calmed down again after that.
At one point the woman left the room to go to another bedroom in the house but Hoey followed her and grabbed her by the throat. She described herself as 'passing out' as a result. He continued to check through her phone going back over her old emails until he found a two year old message that had indicated she was single.
The woman described Hoey as 'freaking out again' and said he tried to headbutt her. She went back downstairs and he followed her. She ran from him, placing a clothes horse between them but he picked it up and threw it, smashing a mirror as a result. It was shortly after this that the woman managed to escape the house.
Hoey admitted to assaulting the woman and producing a knife. He admitted that he had lost control and had acted in a threatening manner. He accepted that there were periods of calm before he got mad again. Hoey accepted he had grabbed the woman by the neck and threatened to kill her.

Family dog mauls one-year-old child to death despite mother's best efforts

A helpless mum who tried in vain to stop a dog attack was forced to watch on as the family pit bull mauled her one-year-old daughter to death. Blakely Blosser was killed by the pit bull at her home in Dover, Ohio, on July 2. Her mother Nicole had leaned over in order to pick up some laundry when Blakely was behind her, which led the pet to turn violent. In the single moment Nicole turned her back, the dog growled and jumped at Blakely, biting at the helpless baby several times, including at her throat and face, reports The Mirror. Nicole bravely tried to save her child and sustained bites and cuts as she attempted to pull the dog away from the baby. But the pit bull would not let up and killed little Blakely after biting down on her, according to authorities. Nicole tried to call 911 as she fought off the pit bull, with emergency services stating they could not hear anything when Nicole first called. She managed to get through the second time she called, and told an operator that a dog killed her baby. Emergency services raced to the home with Blakely being pronounced dead shortly after they arrived at the scene. Tuscarawas County Sheriff Orvis Campbell told Fox8: "The mother clearly put up a fight... I'm not sure any of us could imagine doing that. I have children and I can't imagine a worse nightmare." The sheriff said Blakely's dad, Derrick, had not been home during the dog attack, and added the pet had been put down. Before the attack, the pit bull reportedly never tried to attack another person, although it had shown signs of aggression toward other dogs. Prosecutors are now reviewing the situation although no charges are expected to be filed, Fox8 said. An obituary for Blakely said: "Born on May 23, 2024, Blakely brought immeasurable joy, light and love into our lives from the moment she arrived. "With her bright eyes, infectious giggle, deep stare, and fearless, courageous spirit, she touched the hearts of everyone who met her. Her joyful essence shone brightest when she was playing with her brother. Their bond was pure and filled with laughter, offering moments of joy that will forever reverberate in the hearts of our family." A GoFundMe campaign has been organised to support Derrick and Nicole following Blakely's death. As of Thursday morning, the page had raised over $17,000 out of a $20,000 target. All donations will go toward the couple and toward any expenses they may face, including time off work, counselling and memorial services. "No family should have to face something like this alone - and while we cannot take away their pain, we can help lift the burdens that come with it," the GoFundMe said. Quantity surveyor pleads guilty to assaulting young woman almost 10 years ago

A Co Donegal man has pleaded guilty to assaulting a young woman causing her harm in Letterkenny. Quantity surveyor Seamus Cooley appeared at Letterkenny Circuit Court where he pleaded guilty to assaulting Shanan Reid McDaid and causing her harm on October 15, 2017 at Castle Street in Letterkenny. The 50-year-old, who is originally from Buncrana, had been in custody in Castlerea Prison since June 20 for breaching his previous bail conditions. Ms Reid McDaid was not present as the court was told that she is currently living in Australia. At the time of the assault Ms Reid McDaid was 18 years old and a third level student. The accused man, wearing a striped shirt and jeans, spoke only to plead guilty to the charge when it was read to him by the court registrar. Cooley was remanded in custody to Castlerea Prison since June 20th after being found to have breached conditions of his bail when he appeared at Cavan District Court. A fresh application was made at Letterkenny Circuit Court for bail but was refused by Judge Roderick Maguire. His barrister, Mr Feargal Kavanagh, SC, told the court that his client's sister, Ms Sinead Moore, would provide a €1,000 surety and said Cooley was willing to tender €10,000 compensation to the victim. Mr Kavanagh, with Mr Pat Sullivan, BL, said Cooley has spent 21 days in a 'grossly overcrowded' prison and is finally facing up to the charge referring to cramped conditions in the prison of up to three prisoners in one cell. Mr Kavanagh asked that legal aid be extended to cover a psychiatric assessment and report on Cooley. He said that Cooley is not a flight risk and needs 'immediate intervention:' Ms Fiona Crawford BL, barrister for the State, said that Cooley has already taken a bench warrant in this and that there have been two applications previously for the revocation of bail. The Irish Mirror's Crime Writers Michael O'Toole and Paul Healy are writing a new weekly newsletter called Crime Ireland. Click here to sign up and get it delivered to your inbox every week In remanding Cooley in custody at Cavan Circuit Court, Judge John Aylmer said that the accused had 'displayed arrogance' and showed a 'flagrant disregard' for bail conditions previously set by the court. Under the terms of his bail, Cooley was due to sign-on three times a week at Buncrana Garda Station, but he had only an 82% adherence. Cooley told the Gardai that he was happy with the amount of times he was signing on and that he was happy to sign on when it suited him. He told Gardai that he started working throughout the country and it 'didn't suit him some days' to sign on. Before Judge Maguire, Mr Kavanagh said Cooley now requires professional intervention and that he has had difficulty facing up to the issues. Mr Kavanagh told the court that there have been a number of legal teams involved in managing his case. 'He seems to be finally in a position where he is facing up to this issue,' Mr Kavanagh said, 'Putting him into a prison cell with three others and hoping to advance matters is not going to serve justice. He is five years facing trial and the stresses of that alone are not doing him any favours.' Ms Crawford pointed out that, having pleaded guilty, Cooley no longer enjoys the presumption of innocence. Mr Kavanagh said his client has turned up on each and every occasion to court and said he was concerned that Cooley's mental health could deteriorate. Judge Maguire noted that an affidavit of Garda Neil Kemmy shared three breaches: he was not inhabiting an address given to Gardai; he was not signing on as required; and he interacted with the complainant. Ms Moore told Judge Maguire that her brother previously attended a psychotherapist and believed that he would again benefit from mental health intervention. She said she would 'do my absolute best' to be on her brother's case on a daily basis to ensure that he abided by the terms of his bail. Ms Moore told the court that she had not had much interaction with her brother recently, but added: 'I will be involved now. I really will.' Mr Kavanagh said he was anxious that the State did not victimise Cooley by incarcerating him. 'He knows what he is facing,' Mr Kavanagh said. 'It will make things far more difficult to do justice if he is incarcerated.' He said that Cooley's guilty plea has avoided a four-five day trial and asked Judge Murphy to impose conditions, accept the surety and allow Cooley to engage with services. Judge Maguire extended legal aid to cover a psychiatrist consultation and report, but given the history in the matter - noting that Cooley was given a chance to adhere to conditions, but then breached them - he said he would not grant bail. Cooley was remanded in custody and will be sentenced in October.
