Ex-Sabah Water director denies approving contractor contribution scheme

KOTA KINABALU: A former Sabah Water Department director has denied agreeing to the collection of contributions.
Testifying in his defence before Sessions Court judge Abu Bakar Manat, Ag Mohd Tahir Mohd Talib said he was completely unaware of any decisions made during the unofficial meeting where he was purportedly to approve a contribution amounting to 27.5 per cent of project costs from contractors.
He said that all statements regarding the meeting had come from Teo Chee Kong, who was his deputy at the time.
Ag Mohd Tahir made this statement in response to a question from his counsel, Datuk Ansari Abdullah, relating to the testimony of the 36th prosecution witness, Suhaimi Asbullah.
On trial alongside Ag Mohd Tahir, 63, are his wife, Fauziah Piut, 57, and former deputy director, Lim Lam Beng, 66.
The trio are jointly facing 37 charges of money laundering involving cash and bank savings totalling RM61.57 million, as well as the unlawful possession of luxury items between October and November 2016.
During the prosecution stage, the 36th witness testified, that on April 7, 2005, he confirmed Ag Mohd Tahir's attendance at a meeting with divisional and district engineers at the department's headquarters.
Recounting Suhaimi's testimony, the witness said that following the meeting with Ag Mohd Tahir, he attended an unofficial session which, he claimed, was only attended by Teo and engineers from various divisions and districts.
The witness further testified that, during this unofficial meeting, Teo had allegedly informed the engineers that Ag Mohd Tahir had approved the 27.5 per cent contribution collection from project costs to be implemented in the respective divisions or districts.
When asked about his working relationship with the 36th prosecution witness, Ag Mohd Tahir described it as normal, typical of a department head and his staff.
Deputy public prosecutors Mahadi Abdul Jumaat and Haresh Prakash Somiah appeared for the prosecution.
Fauziah was represented by Ansari and Erveana Ansari, while Lim was defended by Datuk Tan Hock Chuan, Baldev Singh, Karpaljit Singh, and Kelvin Wong.
The trial will resume on June 25.

PM: No immunity in Zara's death probe

Anwar speaking at the closing ceremony of the National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen Day 2025. KOTA KINABALU (Aug 3): Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has declared that no individual implicated in the death of 13-year-old student Zara Qairina Mahathir will receive protection, regardless of rank or title. He has directed Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail and Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail to ensure the probe is conducted swiftly and comprehensively. 'There was a death recently, and the Education Minister (Fadhlina Sidek) is being attacked and accused of various things. What has become of our country? This death is not a trivial matter,' he said during his speech at the closing ceremony of the National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen Day 2025 here on Sunday. Also present were Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu and his deputy Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup. Anwar also reminded the public not to make speculations or accusations without evidence, emphasising that Malaysia is a nation founded on the rule of law. 'This is a nation of law, not slander. Whoever is involved in a criminal act such as murder will not be protected,' Anwar said. 'Death is not something to be taken lightly. Even if there is a child of a poor farmer from Kundasang, if there is a death, it would be our responsibility to find out the cause.' Anwar said that whoever are involved in murders and crimes — a Tan Sri, a Datuk Seri or a minister — they will not be given any protection. 'But do not slander others, whether it's a minister's child or deputy prime minister's child. What is happening with this slander without proof?' Zara Qairina, 13, was believed to have fallen from the third floor and was found unconscious in a drain near her school dormitory in Papar, Sabah, at 4 am on July 16. She was pronounced dead at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital here on July 17. The student's death quickly went viral, sparking widespread public reaction on social media. On Saturday, Mohd Khalid said the investigation paper regarding Zara Qairina's death had been completed and would be submitted to the Attorney General's Chambers for further action. Police have recorded statements from 60 witnesses, including students and staff of SMKA Tun Datu Mustapha Limauan, and three individuals nicknamed 'Kak Wana,' 'Kak Dedeng,' and 'Tomboi' who were cited in social media rumors. The probe focuses on two angles: the cause of death (including possible bullying) and the circumstances surrounding the incident. Investigation papers are now with Bukit Aman for review before submission to the Attorney General's Chambers. The Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Sabah Tun Musa Aman, Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mustapha Sakmud, Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Ali and Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun have refuted claims of their families' involvement of the case. Zara's mother, Noraidah Lamat, has distanced herself from viral claims linking her daughter's death to VIPs. Her lawyers clarified she 'never mentioned any high-profile individual' and urged the public to stop spreading unverified allegations . Police confirmed no evidence ties VIPs to the case.

Man charged with raping ex-sister-in-law

KUALA LUMPUR: An unemployed man was charged at the Sessions Court today with raping his former sister-in-law in 2023. The 31-year-old claimed trial before Sessions Court judge Siti Shakirah Mohtarudin. He is accused of raping the 31-year-old victim at her house in Bandar Bukit Jalil around 3.30am on Jan 22, 2023. The charge, framed under Section 376 of the Penal Code, carries a maximum 20-year jail term and whipping, upon conviction. Police investigations revealed that the accused fled after the victim lodged a report two years ago. However, his luck ran out when he was arrested in a separate case involving a drug offence. Further checks showed he was wanted for the alleged rape. He was earlier charged in the magistrate's court over the drug-related case. Deputy public prosecutor Muhammad Zul Hilmi Latif did not offer bail as the offence is non-bailable. "But if the court wants to use its discretion to allow bail under Section 388 of the Criminal Procedure Code, the prosecution asks for a high bail to be imposed. "The accused must also be ordered to report to the police station monthly and not harass the victim," he said. The accused, who was not represented, was asked by the judge whether he understood the charge and if there was anyone who would post bail. "I understand. No one is here to bail me," he said. Siti Shakirah did not grant bail and set Aug 26 for document submission and appointment of a lawyer.
