No major outcome on first day Cambodia-Thai border talks

PHNOM PENH: The first round of the Cambodia-Thailand Joint Boundary (JBC) meeting concluded in Phnom Penh without any breakthrough.
Both parties are expected to resume the negotiations of the sixth commission meeting on Sunday morning, according to the state media Agence Kampuchea Presse.
"JBC meeting in Phnom Penh was temporarily closed at almost 4pm and with both sides resuming the meeting on June 15, 2025," said the state media.
The ongoing JBC meeting is the first in 12 years.
The closed-door dialogue was chaired by Lam Chea, Minister in charge of the Secretariat of State for Border Affairs of Cambodia.
The Thai delegation was led by Prasas Prasasvinitchai, an adviser to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in charge of border affairs.
This was the first formal diplomatic dialogue since tensions erupted on May 28, when Cambodian and Thai troops clashed briefly near Cambodia's northern Preah Vihear province area.
A 48-year-old Cambodian sergeant was killed in the incident.
Both neighbours have been engaged in a decades-long dispute over their undemarcated 817km land border.
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet on Friday firmly stated that his government will not address four specific issues during the ongoing JBC meeting.
Instead, he said that these matters will be referred to the International Court of Justice (ICJ), regardless of whether Thailand agrees.
He said Cambodia will submit the case to ICJ on Sunday (June 15).
Thailand opted to negotiate all border issues on a bilateral level.
The four disputed issues are related to the ancient temples, namely, Ta Moan Thom, Ta Moan Tauch, Ta Krabei, and the Emerald Triangle area bordering Cambodia, Laos and Thailand.

Bangkok building collapsed after Myanmar quake due to construction, design flaws, probe shows

In Thailand, a 30-storey building was the only structure in Bangkok to collapse following the 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar. -- PHOTO: AFP BANGKOK (Bloomberg): Thai investigators concluded that flaws in the design and construction methods caused the collapse of a partially built Bangkok building that killed at least 89 people during the March 28 earthquake, according to Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra. An investigation by a government agency and three universities found that the elevator and stairwell walls - key structures meant to absorb shear force - were improperly designed and built, Paetongtarn said at a press briefing Monday. She added that the quality of steel, concrete and other materials met required standards, disputing earlier reports that substandard steel bars had been used. "The failure stemmed from deficiencies in both the design and construction methods,' she posted on social media platform X. "In particular, the construction techniques, such as the construction of the elevator shaft wall, did not comply with engineering principles and standards.' The 30-story building intended to house Thailand's State Audit Office, was the only structure in the capital to collapse following the 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck central Myanmar. Police have filed criminal charges against a prominent Thai construction tycoon and about a dozen others for negligence resulting in the collapse and loss of life. The building was being constructed by ITD-CREC, a joint venture between Italian-Thai Development Pcl and China Railway Number 10 Thailand Co. The venture was awarded the 2.14 billion baht ($65.75 million) contract through competitive bidding in 2020, with construction starting later that year, according to the State Audit Office. Premchai Karnasuta, president of Italian-Thai Development, the project's main contractor, was among more than a dozen executives, engineers, designers and supervisors who reported to police after a court issued arrest warrants. A fact-finding committee will submit its report to the Department of Special Investigation and Royal Thai Police for further action, Paetongtarn wrote on X. -- ©2025 Bloomberg L.P.

Lecturer fined RM1,500 for assaulting wife

KUALA LUMPUR: A university lecturer was fined RM1,500, in default a month in jail, after pleading guilty to voluntarily causing hurt to his wife two weeks ago. Magistrate Atiqah Mohamed @ Mohamad Saim ordered Thai national Ibrahim Tohyala, 45, to serve the default jail term if the fine is not paid. He was charged with voluntarily causing hurt to his wife, Siti Munira Mohd Salleh, 41, at an apartment in Setapak on June 15. He had hit her and grabbed her arm and thigh during the incident at 4.30pm. The offence carries a one-year jail term or a fine up to RM2,000 upon conviction. According to the facts of the case, the altercation began at 4.30pm that day following a misunderstanding. Ibrahim threw food at Munira and hurled verbal abuse. The situation escalated the next day, when he grabbed her hand and kicked her leg, causing bruises. He also punched and slapped her face. Before leaving their home, he threatened to destroy their property with a hammer and pointed a sharp object at her, saying he would kill her. In mitigation, lawyer Ahmad Ikram Ab Alim asked for his client to be spared a jail term. "The accused apologised for his actions and vowed not to repeat the offence. "He was provoked by the complainant and also sustained injuries himself. "He knows he is in the wrong. He will be careful and will not resort to criminal intimidation. "His guilty plea saved the court time and resources. As this is his first offence, I request that he be given a minimal fine." Deputy public prosecutor Atiqah Mohamed @Mohamad Saim asked the court to mete out a proportionate sentence. "The accused's early guilty plea does not mean a discount on sentence," she said.

Eda Ezrin's drug case moved to Songkhla Court of Appeal

PETALING JAYA: The drug case involving popular Kelantan singer Eda Ezrin, or Wan Norshaheeda Azlin Wan Ismail, 30, along with her husband and four friends, has been transferred to the Court of Appeal in Songkhla. According to sources, the decision was made at the request of the Thai prosecutor as the singer of 'Bae Soba Bae', her husband, and four friends are currently detained at Narathiwat Provincial Prison awaiting further legal proceedings. Sinar Harian reported on June 5 that the fate of Eda Ezrin, her husband, and four friends may be determined by the Supreme Court of Thailand. Citing a spokesperson for the Narathiwat Provincial Court stated that this situation is not impossible based on previous cases. "With the large quantity of drugs seized... yes, this case is expected to be brought to the Court of Appeal, and possibly even to the Supreme Court. It will certainly take years to resolve. If acquitted, they will all be free; if guilty, all will be imprisoned. "Many drugs were seized but no one confessed. This is what the prosecutor will prove. If one or two admit, the others will be freed," he said. Previously, Sinar Harian reported that Eda Ezrin, along with her husband and four friends, were released from prison after being acquitted of charges of possessing 6,059 methamphetamine pills found in a hotel room in Golok on November 1 last year. The decision was made by a panel of two judges after reviewing all prosecution witness testimonies during three days of case mention proceedings on Feb 11, 13, and 14. However, all the Malaysians returned to Narathiwat Provincial Prison despite being acquitted of possessing 6,059 methamphetamine pills on Thursday June 29). This action allows the prosecution to appeal the court's decision to acquit all the Malaysians. Eda Ezrin's defence lawyer, Sufian Abdul Aziz, stated that the prosecutor could file an appeal within one to four months.
