Whisky boss who abused wife over birthday gift avoids jail

He repeatedly slapped his estranged partner and later pushed her into a kitchen cabinet which caused her an injury.
Leggat wished his wife dead notably after he was unhappy about a water bottle he received as a birthday present.
He also attempted to stop Cara from seeing her dad - company chairman Fred Laing and mum Catherine Laing, both 74.
Cara finally reported matters to the police having initially been scared that a conviction would affect Leggat's job prospects.
Unemployed Leggat was found guilty in June of engaging in a course of behaviour which was abusive to his partner or ex-partner.
Sheriff Allan McKay told him at sentencing: "On some level these are an incredibly sad set of circumstances.
"This offer of a community payback order is a direct alternative to custody.
"If you breach it and don't see it through, you will find yourself going to prison."
A four-month non-harassment order was also granted prohibiting Leggat's contact with Cara.
The Glasgow Sheriff Court trial heard that Leggat and Cara were married in 2013 and worked together at the firm.
Cara stated to the court that between September and November 2022 was "the worst time of my life" and took a panic attack.
She recalled that in October 2022 she had made a re-heated sausage casserole dinner for the pair.
Leggat told her to serve a "better looking meal" which he said was suitable for a child and called her names.
The next incident took place in January 2023 as a result of Leggat's birthday plans.
She said: "He was most aggrieved and disappointed at a lack of effort to mark his birthday in terms of a meal out.
"He also didn't rate his presents which included a sports water bottle that I bought him."
The water bottle - said to have been made famous on TikTok - was deemed "childish and ridiculous" by Leggat.
Leggat then told Cara: "I hope you die in your sleep."
The witness added that Leggat apologised to her for the remark and claimed it was "a bit of banter."
The pair were given hospitality tickets to Hampden Park in February 2023 for an Old Firm League Cup Final clash.
Cara stated that when they walked home after the match and she was pushed into a bush by Leggat
She said: "I ended up in a bush or my back against a bush as a result of the force as a result of the slap to my face."
When asked how she felt about the incident, Cara replied that it was "upsetting."
Leggat "discouraged" Cara to see her parents which also included a curfew which made her "twitch" when it was close.
Prosecutor Siobhan Currie said in her closing submissions: "Ultimately, there was a pattern of behaviour to isolate her."
Leggat was lastly violent towards her in November 2024 at the family home in the city's Pollokshields.
Leggat slapped her on the forehead and pushed her into a kitchen cabinet which resulted in a thigh injury.
Cara told the court that she called her mother and father after the incident and Fred attended their home.
The court heard that Fred confronted Leggat and "grabbed him by the scruff of the neck."
Fred then got his daughter to contact the police which led to Leggat's arrest later that night.
Miss Currie asked Cara why she did not contact the police on an earlier occasion.
She replied: "I knew he wanted to stay in the Scottish whisky industry.
"From my knowledge he would find it hard to get into the USA and Singapore which are key places in the industry.
"I didn't want the man not to get an international job."
Leggat, now of Bearsden, East Dunbartonshire, told the court in his evidence that he left the company in 2023 with Cara taking over his role.
Duncan McPhie, defending, told the sentencing: "My client admits, accepts and regrets the behaviour.
"He is remorseful and regretful and he is sorry.
"In all the circumstances, he tenders his apologies to the court.
"It is probably too late to apologise to his victim, but he has asked me to apologise the behaviour he was convicted of."

We reported how the 77-year-old's body was found six hours later, despite staff members falsified claims that they had checked on him through the night. It has since been revealed that an inspector from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) counted 320 steps from Mr Kearins' room to the care home's car park just off Lambhill Street, where his body was discovered at around 7am. (Image: Supplied) Following his death, Oakminister Healthcare Limited, who own the home, pleaded guilty to breaching Sections 3(1) and Section 33(1)(a) of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974. The company was fined £53,750 at Glasgow Sheriff Court on July 23, 2025. Glasgow Sheriff Court was told that due to the nature of the plea of guilty, the company did not cause Mr Kearins' death. Their guilt is in relation to failing to ensure a system of work was in place to make sure the internal fire alarm door was active. Following the hearing, HM Inspector Amna Shah slammed the care home, deeming the incident 'completely avoidable'. 'We will always take action against those who fail in their responsibilities.'] Kearins, who had dementia, had been living in a room within the Clyde Unit of the home since 2012. As part of its investigation, HSE made enquiries regarding the use of an internal fire door and was unable to obtain corroborated evidence of who was last to use the door prior to Mr Kearins, who is thought to have exited through it just before 1am. (Image: Supplied) The same door was closed about an hour later by an unknown member of staff carrying out routine checks. It was confirmed by the care home manager that once the door was noted to be insecure, the member of staff should have initiated a head count of all of the residents to ensure their safety. However, this was not carried out. The HSE investigation found the company had failed to have a safe system of work in place. Records held by the company in relation to Mr Kearins extensively noted the clear risk that he might abscond or 'wander'. It was part of his care plan that he be checked or monitored every hour. HSE guidance states that the security of doors and gates should be considered where assessment identifies that specific residents leaving the premises will present a significant risk to their safety. A senior care assistant and a care assistant who had responsibility for Mr Kearins' care were also found to have falsified records, stating that they had performed tasks involving him at a time when he was in fact no longer in the home. Both were unaware he was no longer in his room until news of his death became known following the discovery of his body in the car park. The management failures in respect of the alarm door reactivation were not causative of Mr Kearins' death and would likely not have even come to light but for four individual errors:

Police said in a statement on Monday night that the 55-year-old father-of-three would appear at magistrates' court next Wednesday. A spokesperson for West Mercia Police said: 'Jason Blades, 55, of Claverley in Shropshire, has been charged with two counts of rape. 'He is due to appear at Telford magistrates' court on 13 August 2025.' Blades is currently awaiting trial on a separate charge of coercive control of his estranged wife Lisa-Marie Zbozen. He denied the allegation when he appeared at Worcester Crown Court last October. The star was charged last September with a single count of 'controlling and coercive behaviour' between January 1 2023 and September 12 2024. In the various clips, a young girl is spotted clambering on top of an escalator, being ushered away by security guards, and reportedly yanking another shopper's hair whilst inside Manchester's Arndale Shopping Centre. One video capturing the incident has been viewed by more than 55 million people on TikTok within just three days. Another snippet on X has amassed over 13 million views in barely 12 hours, with folks from all corners of the globe sharing their opinions on the footage. It comes after a family of 10 'barged out' of pub in brazen dine and dash after £320 meal. Some American viewers have drawn comparisons between the girl and children's book character Junie B Jones, as well as The Grinch's Cindy Lou Who. The footage appears to kick off with a young girl in a pink coat and her family having a row with a team of security staff outside a shop, alongside another group of shoppers. It's unclear what is being said, but online speculation suggests that the girl and her family were accused of shoplifting, with security seen separating the two groups of shoppers. As the clip rolls on, the girl and her family depart, before another young girl hurls an unidentified object towards where the security guards and the other group of shoppers are standing, reports the Manchester Evening News. In a subsequent video, believed to follow the earlier footage, the girl in the pink coat is seen descending an escalator ahead of two security staff. At the top, she confronts a group of onlookers, before being filmed yanking the hair of a female shopper. The girl then returns down the escalator, all the while sporting a grin. The collection of videos has sparked a flurry of reactions, with some labelling the young girl a 'diva' while others condemn her behaviour. One viewer commented: "the pink jacket girl CLIMBING OVER the escalator, going back down it, and then going back up just gag her is frying me like WHO IS THIS DIVA LMFAOOO."
