'Meme stocks,' a term popularized during the Gamestop (GME) stock frenzy of 2021, are companies that attract a cult-like following that can lead to volatile swings in stocks as retail traders swiftly move to invest.
More than 140 million Krispy Kreme shares had been traded as of just after 2 p.m. EDT on Wednesday—outpacing its normal volume by 26 times—after it shot up 27% on Tuesday.
GoPro had 54 times its normal trading volume Wednesday afternoon, a day after the stock soared 41%.
Kohl's, which rose 38% on Tuesday, placed third as the most trending ticker on Stockwits that same day, a social media platform focusing on retail investors.
Krispy Kreme was up 4.1%, GoPro 8.4% and Kohl's down 15.1% on the day as of Wednesday afternoon.
GoPro's recent surge has turned the stock around to put it up 40% on the year, while Krispy Kreme and Kohl's are still down year to date, despite indexes rising to all-time highs.
Meme stocks are often struggling companies that gain viral popularity across social media, as many users share nostalgic memories of the brands, with the viral trends translating into often unprecedented stock price rises—and subsequent falls as investors cash in. Reddit, and more specifically the r/wallstreetbets subreddit, has historically been the focal point for buzz around meme stocks, but discourse also takes place on X and Facebook. The latest craze started in early July with the stock of Opendoor Technologies, an online real-estate, increasing 600% thanks to social media attention. Crucial Quote
Danial Burnside, a financial analyst and professor at the University of Rochester, told Forbes that 'with companies like Kohl's, GoPro, Rocket — you're not investing in fundamentals, you're betting on crowd psychology and social media dynamics,' adding 'Researchers don't have good models for this.. you can't rely on any good economics to guide you here.' If someone decides to invest in a meme stock, Burnside encourages potential investors to 'keep it small.' 'No more than, say, 5% of your portfolio,' he added. 'It's speculation, not strategy. If you can't afford to lose it, you can't afford to meme it.'

Why GoPro Stock Is Skyrocketing Today
Key Points GoPro is rocketing higher today thanks to its newly attained status as a hot meme stock. While the company's valuation has soared, the fundamentals of the business haven't changed. GoPro stock could see more bullish meme-driven momentum, but the company's share price has already pulled back a lot from today's high. 10 stocks we like better than GoPro › GoPro (NASDAQ: GPRO) stock is posting massive gains in Wednesday's trading. The action-camera specialist's share price was up 23% as of 12:45 p.m. ET and had been up as much as 73% earlier in the session. Despite the huge rally for the stock, there's not any business-specific news pushing GoPro's valuation higher today. Instead, the company has recently gained favor as a meme-stock play -- and some investors are buying up shares in hopes of scoring big returns in a short period of time. GoPro surges on meme-stock rally Meme-stock traders have identified GoPro as one of their next favored plays, and their buying action is helping to spur huge gains for the company's share price. The action-camera specialist's stock is now up roughly 4% over the last year of trading, but its still down roughly 68% over the last five years. The business has been struggling as its faced commodification pressures in the camera market, and its beaten-down valuation helped to set the stage for its recent meme-driven rally. What's next for GoPro? With expectations that interest rates could fall in the near future and that the Federal Reserve will cut rates multiple times this year, speculative stocks have come back into fashion. While it's possible that GoPro's rally could continue, investors should be careful about betting that the stock will be the next GameStop. GoPro's core business still faces the same challenges that it did prior to its big valuation pop, and there's a big risk that its share price will plummet when the meme momentum loses steam. On the other hand, it's possible that the company will be able to take advantage of the recent valuation surge by selling new stock at it current elevated levels. India's equity benchmarks to open flat as market weighs UK trade pact
(Reuters) -India's equity benchmarks are expected to open little changed on Friday as investors weigh the newly signed trade pact with Britain, which will cut tariffs of goods ranging from textiles to whisky and cars. The Gift Nifty futures were trading at 24,993.5 points as of 8:04 a.m. IST, indicating that the Nifty 50 will open near Thursday's close of 25,062.1. "Signing of the India-UK FTA, which is expected to boost bilateral trade by about $34 billion annually, is hugely significant in the present context when India is eager to reach a deal with the U.S. on trade and tariffs," said VK Vijayakumar, chief investment strategist at Geojit Investments. Shares of textiles, automakers, leather, footwear and other companies will be in focus as UK exports become duty-free. While the India-UK agreement should boost sentiment, the market is unlikely to see major upside until there is clarity on U.S. trade negotiations, analysts said. India is making "fantastic" progress in talks with Washington, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal told Reuters on Thursday, but played down the importance of deadlines. Earlier this week, two Indian government sources said prospects for an interim deal before U.S. President Donald Trump's August 1 deadline had dimmed amid deadlock over tariff cuts on key agricultural and dairy products. U.S. drops to lowest ranking yet on index of most powerful passports
The U.S. has dropped to its lowest ranking yet on the index that tracks the most powerful passports among countries, according to a new quarterly report released this week. The Henley Passport Index, which was formed by London-based consulting firm Henley & Partners, revealed in a Tuesday update that the U.S. has gone down by one spot in the world rankings, and now has the 10th most powerful passport worldwide. The report is compiled using data from the International Air Transport Association. The U.S. was first on the list in 2014. The U.S. passport allows Americans to enter 182 countries without a visa. Tied with the U.S. are Lithuania and Iceland. 'The consolidation we're seeing at the top underscores that access is earned — and must be maintained — through active and strategic diplomacy. Nations that proactively negotiate visa waivers and nurture reciprocal agreements continue to rise, while the opposite applies to those that are less engaged in such efforts,' said Christian H. Kaelinm, the inventor of the passport index concept. Singapore is still in first place, allowing its citizens visa-free access to 193 destination spots. South Korea and Japan share second place, granting 190 visa-free destinations to their citizens. Seven European Union (EU) countries — Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, and Spain — are in the third spot. Seven other EU nations — Austria, Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal and Sweden — are in fourth place, while Greece, Switzerland and New Zealand are tied in fifth place, according to the report. Afghanistan is at the bottom of the list with allowing visa-free access to 25 destinations. 'While international passport rankings may vary based on methodology, our focus remains on facilitating secure, efficient, and reciprocal travel for American citizens and foreign nationals alike,' a State Department spokesperson said in a statement to CBS News.
