Why Is California So Chilly This Summer?

Why Is California So Chilly This Summer?

New York Times4 days ago
San Francisco is seeing the coldest start to a summer in over two decades, and nobody has felt the chill more than the people tasked with painting the Golden Gate Bridge.
Fred Mixon, the paint superintendent for the bridge, said his team has used heaters on most days this summer to warm up the steel before applying the International Orange paint that defines the bridge's iconic vermilion hue. When the steel is cold, the paint doesn't adhere as well and can flake off after it dries.
'This is the first time in a long time that we've used the heaters in summer,' he said. 'We are using them most days this summer, whereas in prior summers we might use them for a day or two all season.'
San Francisco, where 70 can be considered a hot summer day, is known for its cool summers, but this year, June and July were even chillier than normal. The average afternoon high downtown was 63.7 degrees, 2.7 degrees below normal, making it the coldest since 1999.
Because of the city's proximity to the Pacific Ocean and the blanket of fog that often hugs the California coast, temperatures tend to stay cool there, even as inland areas roast in the hot sun and triple-digit heat. This summer, that nip in the air has been felt up and down the coastline of Northern and Central California and into the Sacramento Valley.
Just an hour south of the city, San Jose saw its 10th coolest start to summer, with records going back more than 100 years. The average high was 76.9, compared to the normal 81.2.

Pleasant conditions are expected again today for the Pittsburgh area

Comfortable weather will be sticking around today for the Pittsburgh area with high temperatures hitting the mid to low 80s. Any Alert Days Ahead? No, but we continue to keep an eye on air quality due to Canadian smoke. Aware: Today will be a seasonally average day. Nothing wrong with that. Morning lows will be in the mid to low 60s, and rain chances will remain isolated with nearly everyone dry. This pattern isn't going anywhere for the work week. We should see highs ticking up slowly though. I have today's high and Wednesday's high both hitting 84° in Pittsburgh. I have highs on Thursday hitting 85°. Weekend highs will be in the upper 80s with us possibly hitting 90 degrees on Sunday & Monday. Your comfort level while outside will continue to be on the high side through at least Thursday. Humidity levels start to go up on Friday in a way that you'll begin to notice. It'll be hot and humid on Sunday. Yesterday I had a rain chance on Sunday. It was just isolated, but I have taken that away for the time being. It may come back. At this point I have an isolated rain chance for today. You'll likely be dry. I have another rain chance in the isolated range on Friday as we see humidity returning. Monday's rain chance is also in the isolated range with more scattered to widespread rain in the forecast for next Tuesday and Wednesday. When it comes to air quality, Canadian smoke will be thickest on the eastern side of the state. They're under an air quality alert due to it. All of New York is also under air quality alerts due to Canadian smoke. Right now model data suggests that we may be under an air quality alert on Wednesday due to a thick round of smoke making its way through our area. Smoke moves north out of Twin Cities Tuesday ahead of incoming heat, humidity

Though the hazy skies will continue to clear in the Twin Cities on Tuesday, northeastern Minnesota is still dealing with air quality concerns. An air quality alert is in effect for the region through noon on Wednesday due to Canadian wildfire smoke. The rest of the state will be mainly dry on Tuesday, with highs in the metro topping out in the lower 80s. Wednesday begins a trend toward hotter and more humid weather, with highs pushing into the upper 80s and low 90s by Thursday and Friday. Heat indices will rise into the 90s late in the week, and heat advisories are possible. The best chance for widespread storms arrives Friday into Saturday as a front moves through, though timing may limit storm strength.

Cloudy Skies Return with a Slight Increase in Humidity

Happy Tuesday everyone! Today won't be as bright of a day with more clouds expected overhead. Expect cloudy skies through the day with very few, if any, breaks. Due to cloud cover, you won't be able to see wildfire smoke but it remains overhead today. Air quality is expected to fall just one level to "moderate" but air quality monitors say they'll be watching through the day to see if it falls into the "unhealthy for sensitive groups" category. Temperatures will be similar to Monday with highs peaking in the low to mid 80s. It'll be a little warmer within and just around Baltimore City. Cooler air returns on Wednesday with temperatures warming to around 80° under more cloud cover. We do have a slight rain chance on Wednesday through the end of the work week but it's not very impressive. The next few days will be more dry than not. Humidity may be a bit more noticeable this week in comparison to days past. Some sunshine returns just in time for the Ravens' first preseason game on Thursday. We're looking at another seasonably cool day Thursday and Friday with highs in the low 80s.
