Motor racing-F1 drivers given trophies made of LEGO at British GP
SILVERSTONE, England (Reuters) -The top three finishers in Sunday's British Formula One Grand Prix were rewarded for their efforts with trophies made of LEGO toy bricks, a novelty appreciated by some more than others.
The trophies are part of a multi-year partnership between LEGO and Formula One that has already put drivers in a fleet of 10 brick-built cars for a pre-race parade at the Miami Grand Prix, a moment that went viral.
"How does it feel after 15 years of F1 to get a podium (trophy) that's made out of LEGO that you can just pull apart?," McLaren's runner-up Oscar Piastri asked Sauber's Nico Hulkenberg, on the podium for the first time after 239 starts.
"It's just made out of LEGO that you can pull apart and probably buy next week," explained the Australian teasingly.
"I love LEGO. It's good. My daughter can play with it too. You've always got to see the bright side," replied the German. "But, you know, a bit of silver or gold would have been nice too, but I won't complain."
Sunday's race marked 75 years of the championship at the Silverstone circuit where it started in 1950 and the winner's gold-adorned LEGO trophy, modelled on the real RAC golden trophy, is made of 2,717 bricks.
It weighs more than 2 kg and is more than 59 cm high and, contrary to Piastri's assertion, cannot be bought as a kit.
The second and third-placed trophies were white with red and blue detailing respectively, while the constructors' was dark blue and gold.
"We wanted to create something very special because it's the 75th anniversary," LEGO's chief product and marketing officer Julia Goldin said.
The blocks are stuck together with glue, and took seven builders 210 hours to create in Denmark.
NEW AUDIENCES
Formula One is reaching out to a new demographic, and particularly a younger audience, with considerable success and has found partners in previously untapped areas.
That includes deals with Mattel's Hot Wheels toy cars, a 2026 collaboration with Disney's Mickey & Friends and LEGO announced last year.
Emily Prazer, Formula One's chief commercial officer, rejected any suggestion of the sport "dumbing down" and said the strategy was to make brands more accessible and reach out to those who may never go to a race.
"LEGO puts us in nearly every shopping mall in the world," she said. "Disney helps us appeal to the next generation of fans. Hot Wheels and Mattel allow for kids to actually play with the cars at home."
Goldin said LEGO also appealed to more and more adults and had products that were intriguing to people with all kinds of interests.
"The same is happening with F1 and there is a real benefit of how the sport is able to engage different people with different interests and different elements of the sport," she said.
"We are not just trying to turn the sport into a toy but actually trying to help the fans to experience the best."

SILVERSTONE, (England): Lando Norris said winning his home British Grand Prix was everything he had ever dreamed of and everything he had ever wanted to achieve, apart from winning the Formula One championship. The McLaren driver's fourth win of the season left him eight points behind Australian teammate and F1 leader Oscar Piastri but Sunday at Silverstone was less about the numbers and more about the emotions. No tears were shed, he claimed, even when he stepped out of the car and embraced his mother. The roll-call of British greats is long and Norris added his name to a list that has Lewis Hamilton's inscribed a record nine times. "When I get emotional, I don't cry, I just smile. It's pure happiness," he said of his feelings on taking the chequered flag and the wobble in his voice that had suggested tears might be flowing. "It's pure enjoyment of the moment that you're in," he told reporters. "I wish I could cry because I think it looks better for pictures sometimes. But no, I just smile instead. "I've joined a long list of pretty incredible winners who have won here in the past. Most of them are Lewis. But to join him and, from a British side, to continue the reign of the British here is pretty amazing. "The last two laps, looking up at the fans and seeing them on their feet and cheering — these are moments that no one really gets, none of you guys get to witness. This is something that I and very few others, especially Brits, get to witness. "It's a very selfish moment but it's one of the most special, the most incredible. "I'm not going say it's my best win, that's not true. Norris in dream land after epic home win at Silverstone
LANDO Norris said it was 'everything I dreamed of' after making the most of McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri's misfortune to secure an emotion-charged British Grand Prix victory on Sunday. The beaming 25-year-old Briton claimed his maiden home triumph in stirring fashion to trim Piastri's lead in the drivers' world title race to eight points after the Australian was handed a 10-second penalty for driving erratically while leading behind the safety car. Piastri was understandably aggrieved at the stewards' decision and requested that McLaren instructed Norris to swap positions with him, but he was told the team would not issue any team orders. 'I don't really understand it,' he said of the penalty meted out after he caused Max Verstappen of Red Bull to overtake him shortly before a re-start that saw the Dutchman slide off-track and drop eight positions. 'I need to look back and see it again because I don't think I did anything different or anything wrong,' he said. 'I mean I did what I did at the first re-start and, apparently, one needed a penalty and other didn't.' Piastri's misery, after McLaren's fifth 1-2 of the season, was Norris's joy as he celebrated with his family and friends after surviving a testing afternoon of torrential rain, multiple safety car interventions and collisions in treacherous conditions. 'Incredible race' 'It's beautiful,' said Norris. 'Everything I dreamed of, I guess. Everything I've ever wanted to achieve. Verstappen laments 'really difficult' Silverstone fifth
SILVERSTONE: Max Verstappen bemoaned "a really difficult" race on Sunday after finishing fifth for Red Bull in the British Grand Prix having started from the 44th pole position of his career. The four-time world champion led in the early stages before being overhauled by the McLarens of championship leader Oscar Piastri and eventual race winner Lando Norris, dropped to 10th after a mid-race spin and then battled back to take fifth on the closing lap. "That was really tough," he said. "Yesterday (Saturday) was alright, but today was really difficult. "From the beginning we didn't have the speed. At the restart, I spun. Then I got stuck in the midfield, and then I had no more speed, which is just not good." "I did expect it to be a tricky race with this weather, but not that difficult and challenging," he added. During the race he exclaimed that "this car is just so difficult to drive", a complaint heard from most of the drivers who have been his team-mate in recent times. On Sunday, his current team-mate Yuki Tsunoda finished 15th. Red Bull team boss Christian Horner said: "The race was exciting, it always is in those conditions. For us, we took a bit of a gamble with the weather, expecting a dry race. "But I think Max did really well. He stuck with it and he got unlucky at the restart. I'm not sure what happened with Oscar, but it put Max on the wrong part of the track and then he had the spin which put him down in the order. "Once the circuit started to dry up, he managed to pick his way through the pack and it was a good recovery to P5. Not the result we were looking for." Meanwhile Lewis Hamilton found some hope for the future after his run of 12 consecutive home race podiums ended when he finished fourth for Ferrari. The seven-time world champion, who has won 15 times in all at Silverstone, was hoping his recent resurgence of form with Ferrari's revised car could enable him to finish again in the top three and for the first time with his new team. But in a chaotic rain and accident-punctuated race he was beaten to the third podium spot by Sauber's Nico Hulkenberg. "The car was unbelievably tricky to drive," said Hamilton. "I think, ultimately, I learned a lot -- there's lots to take from the day. It's only my second time driving in the wet in this car. "I can't even express how hard it is. It's not a car that likes these conditions, but having lots of data to take from this gives me a chance to sit down with the people that are designing the car for next year because there are elements of this car that can go into it.
