THE full ban on single-use plastics in Selangor could be implemented as early as 2028, says Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.
He said there was a possibility for the ban to take place earlier than the current target of 2030, subject to feasibility.
While still committed to phasing out single-use plastics at the current target of 2030, Amirudin said the time frame gave businesses and the public time to adjust to the idea of having no single-use plastics.
'We need to study the relevant laws as there are challenges in implementation and enforcement,' he said at the launch of the Plastic-Free Campaign Series 2 held at Laman Seni Safari 2 in Klang.
Amirudin added that public awareness and adaptation are crucial for the success of the ban.
He acknowledged that low-cost plastic products remained widely available and said Selangor would implement reduction initiatives in phases.
'Our campaigns are commitments to initiatives like the 'Roadmap to Single Use Plastic 2030'.
'Collaborations are needed with major retailers to signify a stronger commitment to reducing plastic waste,' he said, adding that more time was needed to cultivate new consumer behaviours.
'Our approach is more than a policy. It is about creating a culture of sustainability.'
Amirudin said all 12 local councils in Selangor have been tasked with facilitating the transition.
'Outlets like supermarkets, convenience stores, hypermarkets and fast food outlets must also comply,' he said.
Amiruding also said that by choosing reusable cloth bags and rejecting single-use plastics, everyone could contribute to a cleaner and greener future.
'In events like today's, reusable bags and tiffin carriers were given out as a way of affecting long-term behavioural change.'
On a separate matter, Amirudin said a detailed technical briefing regarding the April 1 gas pipeline explosion in Putra Heights would be held following today's State Legislative Assembly sitting.
'We want everyone to understand the real aspects and not perceive the issue wrongly.
'What is important is that we want to move forward.
'On legal proceedings, we leave the matter to those affected,' he said.
The state assembly session will run from today to July 18 at Selangor State Assembly Building in Shah Alam.

No room for extremism or liberalism: Selangor passes Religion of Islam Amendment Bill

SHAH ALAM, July 7 — The Selangor State Legislative Assembly today passed the Administration of the Religion of Islam (State of Selangor) (Amendment) Enactment Bill 2025, aimed at clarifying the criteria for appointing members of the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Mais) other than ex-officio members, members of the Fatwa Committee, the Credentials Committee and the Credentials Appeal Committee, who must adhere to the Ahli Sunnah Wal Jamaah creed. The bill, which involves amendments to 10 clauses, was unanimously passed after the third reading, following a debate by six assemblymen at today's sitting. Earlier, State Islamic Religious Affairs and Innovation Committee chairman Dr Mohammad Fahmi Ngah, when tabling the bill, said the amendment proposes to include the interpretation of Ahli Sunnah Wal Jamaah in Enactment No. 1/2003. He said that during the drafting of the 2025 Bill, Mais conducted engagement sessions with stakeholders, including legal experts and representatives from relevant departments and organisations. 'Among the parties involved were the Selangor State Legal Advisor's Chamber, Selangor Mufti Department, Selangor Syariah Judicial Department, Selangor Prosecution Department, Selangor Islamic Religious Department, Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim), Attorney General's Chambers, academics and other relevant stakeholders,' he said when tabling the bill here. Elaborating, Mohammad Fahmi said the amendment could also prevent the appointment of individuals with extreme or liberal views, or those inclined towards teachings that deviate from the Ahli Sunnah Wal Jamaah creed, in the administration of Islamic affairs in Selangor. 'It is also to ensure that the Islamic administration of Selangor aligns with the teachings of Ahli Sunnah Wal Jamaah and the principles of Maqasid Syariah, particularly in preserving the religion,' he said. Mohammad Fahmi said the bill was also in line with the decree of the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, on March 14, instructing Mais chairman Datuk Salehuddin Saidin to immediately implement the amendment to include provisions on the position and interpretation of Ahli Sunnah Wal Jamaah for the Muslim community, particularly in Selangor. — Bernama

Sabah boosts padi productivity in six key districts with modern farming

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry is rolling out measures to improve padi productivity across six major districts. Kota Belud, Kota Marudu, Tuaran, Tambunan, Keningau, and Papar will benefit from modern farming techniques and infrastructure upgrades. Assistant Minister Hendrus Anding revealed that the Sabah Rice and Padi Board has earmarked 121.4 hectares in Tambunan for a high-yield padi pilot project. 'This initiative will feature full automation, mechanisation, and scheduled water management to maximise output,' he said during the State Legislative Assembly session. The ministry is also executing the Quality Padi Production Scheme, which includes satellite farms for seed production, particularly the TR8 variety. Three dedicated centres in Papar, Tenom, and Kota Belud will support this effort. In response to queries from Datuk Rubin Balang, Hendrus shared that abandoned padi fields are being revived. Last year, 437.57 hectares out of a targeted 7,392 hectares were successfully restored. Additionally, the Two-Season-a-Year Planting Campaign is being promoted in select areas using Rice Check technology and centralised farming systems. To further drive agricultural growth, the ministry launched the Sabah State-Level Rural Agricultural Economic Revolution in Tambunan on April 28. The program aims to boost food security and productivity by encouraging broader community involvement in farming. Modernisation remains a priority, with ploughing machinery, drones, and IoT solutions being deployed. 'These technologies address labour shortages while improving precision in fertiliser and pesticide application,' Hendrus added. – Bernama

Sabah To Boost Padi Productivity In Six Main Districts

GENERAL KOTA KINABALU, July 7 (Bernama) -- The Sabah Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry will implement initiatives to enhance padi productivity in six main districts, namely Kota Belud, Kota Marudu, Tuaran, Tambunan, Keningau and Papar, the State Legislative Assembly was told today. Assistant Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry Minister Hendrus Anding said to achieve this, the Sabah Rice and Padi Board (LPBS) has identified 121.4 hectares of padi fields in Tambunan as a pilot project for modern high-yield padi farming. 'This pilot project will utilise full automation and mechanisation, along with scheduled water management. The ministry, through the Department of Agriculture, is implementing various initiatives to enhance the productivity and quality of agricultural products such as fruits, coffee and padi in the state. 'The Quality Padi Production Scheme is also being implemented through the development of seed production satellite farms, particularly for the TR8 variety, supported by three padi seed production centres in Papar, Tenom and Kota Belud,' he said. He said this in response to a question from Datuk Rubin Balang (GRS-Kemabong), who asked about the ministry's efforts to boost crop yields, particularly for fruits, coffee and padi in the state. Hendrus said the ministry was also implementing a restoration project involving 7,392 hectares of abandoned padi fields in stages, with 437.57 hectares successfully restored last year. 'The ministry has also implemented the Two-Season-a-Year Planting Campaign in selected padi fields using the Rice Check technology package and the Centralised Management Farming System,' he said. Hendrus added that the ministry launched the Sabah State-Level Rural Agricultural Economic Revolution in Tambunan on April 28, with the objective of increasing agricultural productivity and food security through wider community participation in agriculture. Hendrus said agricultural mechanisation and automation initiatives were also being expanded through the use of modern technology, including ploughing machinery, drones and the Internet of Things (IoT), to improve farm operation efficiency.
