MCMC, Defence Ministry ink deal to boost airspace surveillance
The agreement was signed by MCMC executive chairman Tan Sri Mohamad Salim Fateh Din and Mindef secretary-general Datuk Lokman Hakim Ali at the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2025 (Lima '25), witnessed by Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.
Also present were Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, MCMC commission member Gen (Rtd) Tan Sri Zulkifeli Mohd Zin, Maj Gen Datuk Muhammad Tarminzi Mustapha (representing the Chief of Air Force), and senior officials from both parties.
In a joint statement, MCMC and the ministry said the agreement marks a strategic partnership to enhance national defence capabilities and readiness through the development of key military infrastructure using advanced communication and security technologies.
The agreement also reflects the government's continued commitment to national security through public and defence sector collaborations.
"Through this agreement, MCMC and the Malaysian armed forces will jointly implement a comprehensive strategic initiative to develop a long-range air defence radar system for the RMAF.
"The new radar system will significantly enhance airspace surveillance and control capabilities in the southern region of Peninsular Malaysia, directly contributing to the nation's security and sovereignty," the statement read.
It also noted that this collaboration aligns with the whole-of-government approach, which prioritises inter-agency synergy in pursuit of national aspirations.

We also receive good cooperation from the Sungai Golok authorities,' he said. He added that discussions would be held to organise it on a larger scale by involving more teams from Kelantan and Thailand's Narathiwat province, so that it can be turned into an annual affair. Besides the main competition, a unique event being planned is a blindfolded boat race, which could add value and attract more visitors from both countries. This year's trial race, held over two days on July 19 and 20, features 40 teams, including five from Malaysia, attracting an estimated 1,000 spectators. Such events not only help preserve cultural heritage, but also play a significant role in revitalising the local economy, which relies heavily on tourism activities in the border area.

South Korean president appoints special envoys to Canada, Malaysia
SEOUL: South Korean President Lee Jae Myung on Sunday appointed special envoys to Canada and Malaysia, his spokesperson said. According to Yonhap News Agency, the delegation to Canada will be headed by ruling Democratic Party (DP) representative Kim Byung-joo and include Maeng Sung-kyu and Kim Ju-young, presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung said in a written briefing. The team to Malaysia will be led by former Oceans Minister Kim Young-choon and include DP representatives Nam In-soon and Yun Kun-young, she said. The team to Canada will depart Tuesday and meet with key Canadian government officials to deliver the Lee administration's commitment to further developing the two countries' comprehensive strategic partnership with a focus on the security, defence and energy sectors.
