Rs 50-60 billion theft finalized during this government's tenure, Senator Faisal Vawda
Senator Faisal Vawda, Chairman of the Senate Standing Committee on Maritime Affairs, has alleged that a land scam worth Rs 50 to 60 billion was finalised during the current government's tenure, with an agreement signed on July 9, 2024, over 500 acres of land.
The Senate Standing Committee on Maritime Affairs convened for a meeting, chaired by Senator Vawda, with key officials including the Chairman of Port Qasim and the Acting Chairman of Karachi Port Trust also in attendance.
During the meeting, Senator Dinesh raised concerns about the absence of permanent chairmen for the Gwadar and Karachi ports, questioning why acting officials were running the operations. In response, Vawda highlighted the seriousness of the matter, stating, "We have three options: surrender, admit corruption, or fight."
He further argued that if the issue of the Rs 50 billion theft had not been addressed promptly, the deal would not have been canceled within 72 hours. "If everything was proper, why was it canceled in just 72 hours? Together, we saved Pakistan's Rs 60 billion," Vawda added.
Vawda also accused Port Qasim of issuing misleading rebuttals through the media to obscure the facts and mislead the public. He stressed that the land deal, involving 500 acres, was signed under the current government, with payments planned for only 365 acres. He claimed that a mere two percent advance was being paid for the land valued at Rs 60 billion.
The Secretary of Maritime Affairs suggested that the issue could have been a mistake, but Senator Dinesh quickly responded, stating that a privilege motion should be raised against the Secretary for misleading the committee.
Vawda strongly criticized the Secretary's defense, calling the theft of Rs 50 to 60 billion "not a mistake" but a serious issue. The Additional Secretary admitted to being unaware of the matter but revealed that they were part of the board overseeing the deal. Vawda added, "I will remind the Additional Secretary of many things."

LHC sets aside FIR order against Suleman Shehbaz
Chief Justice Aalia Neelum of the Lahore High Court (LHC) has set aside a district court's order directing the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) against Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's son, Suleman Shehbaz, in a cheque dishonour case. The high court held that the lower court failed to properly examine the facts of the matter. Suleman Shehbaz had challenged the July 10 order issued by the district judge, which instructed police to register an FIR against him on charges of issuing a bounced cheque. During the LHC proceedings, Suleman's counsel contended that the district court's decision was not only contrary to law but also passed without a proper review of the factual background. The respondent's counsel alleged that Suleman's company had purchased 17 laptops and issued a cheque for Rs 600,000 in payment, which was later dishonoured. However, Suleman's counsel countered that no laptops were ever delivered to the company's office. He further argued that the cheques in question were stolen by company employees and wrongfully handed over to the respondent. An FIR had already been registered against those individuals, he added. 'The company has no connection with these cheques,' the counsel asserted. Chief justice also questioned the respondent's legal team for failing to specify the date of the alleged laptop purchase. She noted that no purchase receipts bore any official stamp either. After hearing arguments from both sides, chief justice ruled in favour of the petitioner and annulled the district court's order.

Unskilled workers: Sindh notifies minimum monthly wage
KARACHI: The Government of Sindh has officially notified a minimum monthly wage of Rs. 40,000 for unskilled workers employed across all industrial and commercial establishments in the province, effective from July 01, 2025. Provincial Labour Minister Shahid Abdul Salam Thaheem, while announcing the revised wage structure, said the minimum monthly salary for semi-skilled workers has been set at Rs. 41,380, for skilled workers at Rs. 49,628, and for highly skilled workers at Rs. 51,745. These revised rates are applicable across all registered and unregistered establishments, ensuring equal pay for male and female workers. He further added that any establishment paying on an hourly basis must now ensure a minimum payment of Rs. 192 per hour for their workers. 'The Government of Sindh is committed to pro-labour policies and continues to take concrete steps to guarantee decent wages, improved working conditions, and the overall welfare of workers,' said the Minister. He emphasized that the wage revision aims to ease the economic burden of inflation and promote a dignified livelihood for the working class.

Information minister steps up criticism of PTI
LAHORE: Punjab Minister for Information and Culture, Azma Bokhari, said that the August 5, protest had already failed before it even started. She stated that the protest is nothing but a flop show, with even the current PTI leadership, party workers, and their close relatives showing complete disinterest. She remarked, 'Phuppo's dream remained unfulfilled; the nephews are not coming to Pakistan. The former sister-in-law has stopped her children from returning.' She added that when even the Mahatma's own children aren't participating in the protest, how could any so-called revolution succeed? She further noted that Aleema Baji herself had already predicted the protest's failure, and the current PTI leadership does not support the movement either. She strongly criticised the situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, calling the Rs 354 billion corruption in local government institutions a 'public charge sheet.' Funds meant for the welfare of the people, she said, are being misused and squandered. Azma Bokhari highlighted the irony that those who consistently accuse others of corruption have themselves been setting new records of misappropriation for the past 12 years. Speaking on the May 9 incidents, Bokhari labelled them a dark chapter in Pakistan's history. 'Instead of expressing remorse or shame, these people continue to justify those disgraceful events,' she said. She concluded by saying, 'Those who set fire to martyrs' statues are now despised across the nation. Those being disqualified today are, in truth, guilty of a failed rebellion.'
